Hunting For Your Heart

Chapter 1

She sat at the stool of the bar, her armor hugged tightly to her skin, helping her to blend into the darkness of the shadows. The other patrons around her didn’t even take notice of the faired hair warrior, probably choosing to keep to themselves so as to not end up on the other end of her blade.

Sigyn knew her father would be furious if he found her in a darkened, musky bar.

After all, he was the God of Fertility, Rain, Peace and she was convinced, quite possibly, the living embodiment of a ball of Sunshine. Freyr had adopted her when she was an orphan, having lost her parents in a war. He was more likely to be caught outside, laughing and mingling amongst the people in the sun than somewhere dark or bloody like his sister.

However, despite being her adoptive father, Sigyn mostly spent her time raised alongside her aunt, Freya, the Goddess of Fertility, Love, War and Magic. This was where Sigyn learned everything she knew about being a warrior and a magic user. While Freyr was busy being a benevolent ruler with his people in Alfheim, Sigyn was learning how to harness seidr and fight like a Valkyrie, slaying any monster that dared to cause a problem.

So, if anyone was to take one look at her, they would see Sigyn as nothing more than a mirror of her aunt. A true beauty to the eye, but also a deadly warrior not to be trifled with. However, there was more to her…or at least she hoped.

“Ye the one they sent?” a scrawny man asked, taking a seat next to her. He had one eye, dressed like a bandit, glancing around to spot someone out of the ordinary. “Are you her?”

“What’s the code?” Sigyn demanded.

“Code?”

“Recite the code or you will suffer the consequences.” She stated, golden energy starting to pulse from her fingertips.

The man gulped. “Oh…yeah… that code.” He cleared his throat in a panic. “Hail Freya, Bright Vanaheim’s flower! I seek the help of your beloved Valkyrie’s by offering this piece of gold…”

He pulled out one small gold coin, placing it on the table. Sigyn’s eyes narrowed. “Do you think this is a joke?! State your quest for me.”

“There have been rumors of a beast from Jotunheim causing mischief everywhere he goes.”

Taking a sip of her wine, Sigyn raised an eyebrow. “What kind of mischief?”

“They say he’s a shapeshifter. Sometimes taking the form of a horse, or woman, or something else. He steals from farmers or makes trouble for the rulers in Asgard.”

She sighed, the energy starting to spark from her hands again. “And why exactly should I be interested in someone who plays pranks on others? It seems like nothing more than a foolish child’s game. Why are you wasting my time with this, especially with offering one coin?”

The man tried to calm himself. “Because…the troublemaker in question has also made a fool of your aunt!”

Sigyn grabbed him by the shirt with a growl, raising him into the air. Everyone in the bar froze, watching the scene with dead silence.

“You better start talking, dunga!” she cursed.

“Uh…let’s see, where to begin: he’s forced one of his friends to impersonate Freya, although it looked more like a mockery. He’s often stolen many of her items too and uh…” he knew he might get suckerpunched for this one. “He says she is a goddess that likes to… get around , if ye know what I mean.”

With that comment, Sigyn blasted the man through the bar and outside the door. She stomped toward him, pointing her sword right at his neck. No one dared to insult her aunt, even if the comments were true about her many…affairs.

“You will tell me the name and location of this beast who dares to make a mockery of my aunt. And then you will give me 100 pieces of gold coin as tribute to Freya, but also for my bounty of slaying the beast. After that, you will give me the next 100 pieces when I return with his heart or head, I’ll decide which.”

“T-Two hundred gold pieces in total?!” the man exclaimed.

Sigyn growled. “You want me to slay this beast that continues to make a mockery of us, right?” He nodded furiously. “Then that is my bargain. Take it or leave it.”

He sighed, pouring his bag of gold coins in her hand. “Very well. His name is Prince Loki of Jotunheim.”

“Pleasure doing business with you.” she said, already beginning her journey and plotting how she would come to take him down.

Everyone had heard of the peace agreement between the King’s of Asgard and Jotunheim. Odin’s son, Prince Thor, was good friends with King Laufey’s son, Prince Loki. But that was as much as she knew, choosing to remain out of the politics and stick to the Vanir way of life.

But now, it had become personal.

This pampered Prince had come to make a mockery of her family by playing his pranks and games. And Sigyn wouldn’t stand for it. Even if her father was married to a lovely Frost Giant from Jotunheim, she was going to show this prince what happened when you messed with the Goddess Freya and her warriors.

I’m coming for you, Loki Laufeyson…sleep with one eye open.

Somewhere on Jotunheim, Prince Loki was minding his business when suddenly he sneezed and soon chuckled after.

“You okay, brother?” One of his Frost Giant brother’s asked, glancing at him.

It was odd for him to sneeze. In fact, there was really no reason for it. They were as much a part of the cold as they were of Jotunheim itself.

“Someone must be talking about me.” Loki said, reclining back with an amused smile. “I must have a secret admirer out there who can’t get their mind off me.”

Both of his brothers rolled their eyes, chuckling, knowing their older brother was only full of himself. The last thing he needed was something to feed his ego even more.

He only ignored their reactions, red eyes sparkling with curiosity, wondering who the little minx could be. He went through a list of people in his head, but soon fell asleep after counting all the people like sheep.

Whoever it was, he knew he would find out sooner than later. No one could help but fall in love with him.

Let me know your thoughts below.

Jotun!Loki is the one from the "What If" series, but with Norse Myth references as there will be many throughout this short story. Sigyn is a Tsundere in this, but don't worry, they will eventually get together. This is Beauty and Beast with a twist.
