Work Text:

When the monsters in his head—and in his life—left him in peace, Yuki looked outside of his cage, searching for the light he wasn't allowed. For the most, he didn't see anyone, but once he had been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of orange.

He had recognized the cat with other kids, and he found him so normal he wondered if everything they said about him was true.

Then, he drew his head back, reprimanded, but it was late.

He had seen him, and it was the beginning of all.

If even the cat was allowed normality, why wasn't he?

If even the cat was loved after he had been abandoned, why his family had left him with Akito?

If the cat was really the most hated, why was he, the rat, the lonely one?

Kyo hated the rat.

Everything was his fault; he was the reason he couldn't go to the main house, he had no place in the zodiac, his mother was dead and his father blamed him, he had lost his only friend.

Kyo hated him and hated that he had everything and Kyo nothing, that he had tried talking to him that night as if it was normal, that he had found Tohru and kept the promise Kyo had made.

He hated him and he embraced that hate, allowing it to shape his life because without it there was only the emptiness, and Kyo liked himself even less when he felt empty.

The resentment was everything he believed in, and one day it would give him all he ever wished for, a place among the others.

He just had to beat the rat.

His eyes widened as he looked at Kyo still on the floor, not believing what he had just heard.

It seemed impossible that someone like him, whom Yuki had admired and envied for so long, could ever hope to be in his place.

Yet, he mused as their hateful glares met one last time, he had been the first to understand that those dreams weren't worth fighting for.

Yuki was just Yuki; he wouldn't wish to be anyone else anymore.

He would leave to Kyo everything that was his and, in the meantime, he would learn to live with his limits.

Drabbles are not my forte, but I tried putting this idea into words and that's what I accomplished.
I hope you liked this experiment and thank you for reading 🥰.
