“They got a room with a bed.” Greed lifted his finger. “Only one bed so we’re gonna hafta share.”
Ed scowled at Greed. He couldn’t believe their rotten luck. This was the sixth time in a row where the hotel they decided to lay low in only had rooms with one damned bed for them to share. It wasn’t his fault they got booted out of Creta for an unfortunate incident that included a homemade pipe bomb and a barrel of gasoline. If Greed hadn’t questioned his ability to make one, he never would’ve bothered, and it wasn’t as if he had meant for the bomb to accidentally hit the barrel. Without the gasoline it would’ve only made some smoke. He hadn’t planned on coming out west and committing arson. What made the situation even worse was that he had no idea if anyone was after them, and they still had miles to go before they got to the Amestrian border, and his human body couldn’t go more than a couple days without sleep.
Greed at least seemed like he was trying to make the best of it by putting them up in the best hotels they could find. But why did all of them only seem to have one room left with one bed and no other options? Ed took his irritation and tried to bury it deep down in the recesses of his mind. After all, he could hardly complain too much since the weather turned for the worse and the ground was covered in snow. Sleeping outside with his automail leg wasn’t an option.
“Fine,” he groused. “Let’s just get this over with.”
Greed grinned then shrugged before turning Ed around and motioning him forward. Greed led the way up the stairs to the second floor. Ed followed closely behind, his eyes darting around them to see if there was anyone watching them. Then his eyes settled on Greed’s ass as they walked down the hallway. Nice and tight enough he could probably bounce a Cenz off it. His line of sight moved to Greed’s muscular thighs then up to his broad shoulders and finely muscled arms. Ed lamented that Greed’s hands were tucked into his pants’ pockets. His thoughts turned to what it would feel like to have Greed’s large hands on his body.
Ed inhaled a sharp breath when his pants started to feel a little tighter. He did his best to shake those thoughts away and focused on Greed’s hand turning the doorknob before disappearing into the room. Once he felt he had sufficiently tucked his hormones deep down where they belonged, he jogged up to the door and quickly darted inside.
The room was nice. Nicer than the last place they stayed, and that one looked pretty fancy to Ed. This one, though, had a really nice large bed. Big enough for them to both comfortably sleep in it... if Greed didn’t hog all the blankets again. Ed made a face at that thought. He didn’t get what was with Greed lately. He supposed that before he had never noticed how much of a blanket hog Greed could be because they weren’t sharing one bed. Now, though, it was all he could do to get a scrap of blanket that barely covered half his body.
“This is good,” Greed said. “Better than the last one, yeah?”
Ed shrugged. “It’s somewhere to sleep, and that’s all I care about.” A half truth. If he wasn’t so paranoid about them getting caught, he might’ve taken the time to appreciate the room more. Right now, he felt too exhausted and burnt out. He turned to Greed and scowled. “I’m gonna go check that closet for extra blankets, and if I find some, they’re mine.”
An innocent look spread across Greed’s face, making Ed’s scowl deepen. “Sure. Whatever you say.”
As if he didn’t know what Ed was talking about. Ed dropped his bag, muttered a string of curse words under his breath as he opened the closet door, fished out the two blankets that were inside, and then went over and dumped them on the floor next to the bed. He went back over to his bag and dug out a pair of sleep pants. He gave Greed one last withering glare before disappearing into the small bathroom to change. When he came out of the bathroom, he saw a large lump in bed and the top of Greed’s hair sticking out from under the blankets.
Ed looked down at the floor, near the bed. The two blankets he had gotten out were gone. He exhaled a frustrated breath and stalked over to the bed. Ed flopped down and pulled on the blankets to get enough to cover most of his body. Ed glanced over at Greed, trying to determine if he had fallen asleep already.
“Hey, Greed.” Ed nudged Greed’s thigh with his leg. “Stop hoggin’ all the blankets, will ya.” He only got a grunt in response. “I’m serious. I told you those two blankets were mine, and you took them anyway.”
“You work for me, which means you belong to me so everything you have is mine,” Greed finally said.
“Don’t give me that everything is yours crap. That was a long time ago I said I’d work for you, and I did my job. We beat your old man. It doesn’t count now,” Ed griped.
“It’s only been three years. ‘Sides, it’s a life-long deal. No take backs,” Greed said with a hint of amusement in his voice.
Ed tugged harder on the blankets with no give. “Fine but I don’t wanna hear any complaints from you when I get sick from freezing to death.”
“If you’re cold then,” Greed lifted up the blankets, “get in closer.”
That gave Ed pause. He looked down at the open space. Right up next to Greed. They’d not only be sharing a bed but personal space. It looked warm and cozy, inviting against the chill in the room. His eyes moved up and met Greed’s. There was not only amusement in them but something else. Something forbidden to Ed’s mind. Something he didn’t dare put a name to. His stomach did that weird flippy thing it occasionally did when Greed got really close to him.
“C’mon, I’m offering to share.” Greed smiled, reminding Ed of an almost smug smirk. “What do you got to lose?”
He had a lot to lose, like his mind. Maybe if he shimmied over and only took enough to cover everything but his arm and leg? His pride was slowly being killed by the thought of being warm, and cozy tonight, something he hadn’t had since they’ve been out West. If he accepted the offer, he could always turn around and ignore the fact that Greed, big, tall, sexy Greed was sleeping so close to him. His pride would take a hit, but Ed had learned to live with far worse.
His eyes met Greed’s again, and now the smile definitely turned into a smirk. Greed hummed at him and motioned at him. Ed narrowed his eyes. It then occurred to him that he was the donkey and the inviting opening in the blankets was his carrot. He didn’t know what kind of game Greed was playing at, but it was working.
Ed sat up and puffed out his chest a little. He inhaled a deep breath then bolted under the opening as fast as he could. As soon as he got under the blankets, warmth washed over him as he tugged the top of the blankets from Greed’s hold and pulled them down. He quickly turned around so that he couldn’t see the satisfied look on Greed’s face that he knew was there.
“Now that wasn’t so hard, was it?” Greed said.
Ed grunted, refusing to answer. Then something unexpected happened. He felt Greed’s leg move over his body, soon followed by an arm, and pulled him in close. Ed let out an undignified squeak. He could feel Greed’s hard body pressed up tightly against him. His butt fit perfectly against Greed’s groin. He immediately tried to think up some arrays, anything, something, just to get his mind off how good it felt to be here, cuddled up with Greed.
A thought struck him that maybe he should’ve stayed on his corner of the bed lest he embarrass himself. It wasn’t as if he were outside and desperate for any kind of heat available, and yet... he couldn’t deny the part of him that had ached for this. Ed wiggled a bit in a sad attempt to break free of Greed’s hold, only to have Greed’s grip on him tighten. It was as if Greed was silently telling him to quit being stubborn. Ed sighed then relaxed his shoulders as all the fight in him dissipated.
“Hey, Greed... why don’t you give me a little space,” Ed said in a half-hearted last-ditch attempt to save his pride. “Greed? You awake?” He gently nudged Greed’s leg with his foot.
There was no answer. Or movement. He let out a quiet breath and wiggled a bit. Ed listened carefully for any signs that Greed would give in a little and all he heard in return was soft breathing. He could feel Greed’s chest steadily rising and falling against his back. His eyes settled on Greed’s hand draping over him, and he couldn’t stop himself from smiling. Ed turned his head enough to catch a glimpse of Greed peacefully sleeping. He exhaled another soft breath and turned around. Ed stared at the wall, bracing himself for a long restless, warm, and cozy night.
