Roy winced a little, both at that specific phrasing, which he’d been trying to avoid, and at Riza seeing through him. Aunt Chris had seen through him too, when she caught him watching Ed dance. “I…don’t want to call it that. At least not yet.”
After an amazing dinner with Ed—definitely not a date—Roy has a necessary conversation with his best friend, second in command, and wrangler.

Flitting back and forth in time between his death scene and their developing relationshipAnd he did shape her. Or at least halfway. He is unsure exactly when he lost control. When he made the error–was it an error?--that led to the holes in his chest, the blood pouring into his lap. To everything that came before, which he does not regret, although perhaps he should.
He doesn’t know when it began. Maybe there was something wrong from the very first. With her, or him.
Jinx always had a hand in his, a cheek to his cheek, a finger hooked into his pocket, a breath in the hair at the back of his neck. Too close, he knew. But he let her keep it up, because he thought: a dog that heeled as close as Jinx did wouldn’t need a leash.
But she was not a dog; she was something wild and predatory, some creature never meant to curl up on a rug. She was not a tool, or his revenge; She was a girl, and not a nice one. And she had a mind of her own. Or at least pieces of it.
He is unsure when he lost control, but there is a moment that stands out with perfect clarity as the instant he realized it was gone.
