Chapter Text
“You know talking to your crush about your crush without her making the connections is quite honestly only going to kill you right?” Yoko looked at Enid with such a disappointed face.
“Yes… But it feels pretty therapeutic at the moment.”
Enid isn’t even sure how she got herself into this position. It was almost a nightly routine for the roommates. Wednesday would already be in their room working on her novel when Enid would come in all exasperated and dramatic. Flop on her bed and then complain to Wednesday…about Wednesday. She didn’t have the slightest clue. Enid used to complain about her overflowing crush to Yoko but Yoko could only survive so much.
“You know Wednesday I think things might be taking a turn!”
“Is this about mystery girl? Have you had a real conversation with her yet?” Wednesday asked unenthusiastic well she typed away.
“I did in fact talk to her! I talked to her loads today!” Enid exclaimed, offended. Wednesday just grunted in response. Enid never really knew whether Wednesday even paid attention to her talk or if she just pretended to listen. Regardless, Enid liked to think the deadpanned girl was in fact listening to her for real.
“I'm pretty sure she like gave me a smile today. Like for reals. I talked to her at lunch”
“I was with you all lunch and you didn’t introduce me? I would have loved to intimate and just lightly threaten her.”
Guess she was listening today. Enid rolled her eyes. “It was after lunch, you left”
“I-”
“I talked to her, you were not there and it was very pleasant” Enid cut Wednesday off. Enid knows she was with Wednesday all lunch and they never left each other's side but these moments always called for some Gaslighting, Gatekeeping, and Girlbossing in order to keep her secret safe.
---
“So Wednesday, do anything fun today in class?” Enid tried striking up a conversation with Wednesday.
Wednesday's eyes gleamed. “I did infect have a great time in monster biology class.” Enid smiled brightly at Wednesday. “I nearly managed to dissect a kid and a snake off of Ajax's head all at once. Then I got sent to Weems. Very eventful.” Wednesday's lip twitched indicating a smile well Enid dropped hers.
“Well I also had a great day and got to pick flowers that I get to use later in a new nail art idea I have!”
“Mmh” was all Enid got in reply.
---
Wednesday dinged her type-writer indicating she finished another page. She put in another piece of paper. “What flowers will you use? Any wild chervil, chokeberries oh, or wild parsnip. Heard that makes you feel like your skin is on fire. A useful weapon to have in those nails of yours” It was the most joy Enid had heard come from Wednesday all week.
“Thank you? I think?” Enid mumbled the end.
“You are welcome.” All you could hear was Wednesday typing. She finished another page. “Stop staring at me” Enid’s face burned and she suddenly found her bed sheets very interesting. “And answer my question.” When Enid didn’t respond Wednesday continued. “Your nails? We do not need to have a conversation. I could be writing. I am multitasking to both strengthen my skills and comply with your needs.”
“Oh uh right yes my nails um I was thinking about wild lupine” She paused for a moment. “But um ya I also picked red clover and buttercups. I'm going to do them with Yoko so she’ll probably have the final say though.’
Wednesday straightened only slightly and kept typing but she was slightly more fidgety than normal. Which really meant a slight shoulder moment, so it went unnoticed by Enid.
“I'm sure the wild lupine will look the least disgusting.”
“Awww Wednesday, what a sweet compliment. I'll do them just for you.” Enid wiggled her fingers at the other girl even though she was not paying attention. “You can come do them with us if you’d like!”
“Get out before I throw you out.”
Enid and Thing slipped out as a book flew at the door.
“Still feeling real therapeutic?” Yoko asked as she painted clear polish onto Thing's nails.
“Yes it does actually. She suggested the wild lupine. Right Thing?” Thing tapped in agreement. Yoko rolled her eyes, placing the red clover onto the wet nail polish.
“She is either never going to find out and you'll die pinning or” Enid went to retort but Yoko kept going “Or she finds out it's about her and you are forced to move in with me. I don't know if I can handle Enid without her Wednesday.” Enid heart skipped a beat hearing Yoko say her Wednesday.
“Or she is just the densest person on earth and will maybe find out eventually and we will live happily ever after.” Enid said so matter of fact.
“So tell her then.” Yoko smirked at her best friend knowing she was incapable of directly saying just how in love she was with Wednesday. Enid still has never even said she likes Wednesday. It's always the crush or just non-stop talking about her.
Enid knew she was trapped. She could never, would never say something so bold to the Wednesday Addams. Nope, she would rather dig her own grave right now. Enid didn’t say anything and just carefully placed the wild lupine on her nails.
It was extremely late when Enid and Thing got back to their room. Thing was fast asleep on Enid's shoulder. She gently put him on Wednesday’s desk. She looked at Wednesday fast asleep then at her nails. She flexed them as if showing off to Wednesday. After staring at Wednesday's perfectly still sleeping body for way too long she made her way back to her own side of the room. Watching the moonlight illuminate the two very drastic sides.
Just as Enid slipped under the covers she heard a voice.
“I'm sure they look perfectly horrid Enid.”
Enid had to keep herself turned from Wednesday's bed. She felt as if her smile might pierce through to the other side of the room and kill the moment she felt they were having.
“Thanks Wednesday.” With that Enid peacefully drifted off to slumber.
“How do they not know?” Enid muffled into her pillow. Today she felt like Wednesday was doing everything just to set her off. Enid caught Wednesday staring at her during lunch and they brushed hands in the hall so Enid had just about lost it.
“Yes Enid you don’t seem like the type to drop subtle hints”
“Thank you?”
“So this person must be a buffoon”
“You have no clue,” Enid says, flinging herself into her bed screaming.
“Enid, please. I am trying to work.”
“I hate you”
“As much as I appreciate such heartfelt words from you, maybe they should be directed at your crush and you wouldn’t be having so many issues.” Wednesday had to cover her ears as Enid screamed more into her pillow.
It was weeks, weeks of this. The two fell into an almost peaceful routine. Wednesday would always be in the room first. Enid would come in and before she could even put her school bag down Wednesday would be asking for updates.
“You have a real conversation with her today?” or “Did you tell her yet?” or “Are you going to tell me who it is?” Enid had to make all the conversations they had quite vague to keep Wednesday from catching on as well as not making stories too close to real life.
Enid realized she was digging herself a very large hole. The more they gained a relationship the more Enid had to hide and lie about her crush. Wednesday seemed at least mildly invested in Enids love life or maybe she was just bored without a murder mystery to solve, regardless Enid was dying a bit.
Today was particularly bad for Enid.
Enid walked into their room expecting Wednesday to be typing away like normal. Instead, she walked almost directly into Wednesday herself. She was sitting with legs crossed on a chair in the middle of the room, facing the door.
“We, and by we I mean me, are going to crack this case. Because honestly Enid this is getting pathetic. If I have to spend the rest of the year watching you pin over a random girl I think I might die and not in a fun way.”
Enid slowly closed the door and pressed her back to it as if she could burst through it. Her face began to heat up. “ I-uh uh you know her so like it would be really awkward if I actually told you so no I don't think I'll be doing that ah.” Enid tried to peel her eyes from Wednesday's face but she had such a determined look it was mesmerizing. “And uh she isn’t just some random girl thank you she is quite special.” Enid felt the need to defend Wednesday(against herself?).
Wednesday simply waved her hand in dismissal. “Yes yes, I'm sure she is just a catch. Would you move on if I killed her? I think I would enjoy that much more as well.” Enid tried not to crack a smile at Wednesday implying she would murder herself.
“No, that would actually be the worst possible choice, I'd much rather crush from afar than have her dead.”
“Odd” Was all Wednesday said. Enid started to move from the door. Wednesday rolled her chair closer. “No this is a right now type of situation." She paused. "Fine, I won’t hurt her if you tell me who it is.”
“Wednesday you can’t kill her if you don't know who it is.”
“Uh thought that would surely get you. Anyway, she must be more stupid than previously thought if she doesn’t know. I am you must make it so obvious. Clearly, she is pathetic and not good enough for you.”
Enid just laughed right at Wednesday. “You think my crush must be oblivious or that they know and just don’t like me back…” Enid did not like that possibility but that would make this integration make sense if Wednesday was just trying to get her to admit it so she could just let her down easier. Wednesday was a very smart girl how could she not know?
“No” Enid just blinked at Wednesday. “No, I don't think they know. Because how could they know you like them and not like you back? Enid, you would make a dreadfully marvelous partner. No one is that stupid as to pass you up.” Enid could feel her face on fire. She needed to get out of this. “Your love is to live in a pit of fire.” Wednesday clearly meant it as a compliment but Enid was going to use it anyway.
“Well if you are just going to insult me I will just do my homework and you can leave me alone.”
Wednesday didn’t move and neither did Enid. “So you are saying there is not one interaction from today you want to talk about? I know Yoko is busy. You would have to keep it all bottled up and you.” Wednesday was now standing in front of Enid. “are unable to keep thoughts to yourself.”
Enid just huffed, hoping her face wasn’t as red as it felt. There was one moment Enid had been dying to talk about all day. She did, in fact, want to go to Yoko first but she couldn’t, Yoko was very busy with her own stuff apparently. “Let me lay on my bed first and I'll tell you. Because I guess you are all invested in my love life now.”
Wednesday moved aside. “I have always been interested in your life, Enid.” She said very matter of fact. This was news to Enid who just made a grunting sound in return.
Then Enid told Wednesday their own interaction from the day. She just had to change some bits.
“We were in uh monster biology”(it was Nevermore history but that would be a dead giveaway). “The teacher said we could pick our own partners for the research project. Not even a second after. Not even a second Wednesday.” Enid flopped on her bed facing the ceiling. “She came right over and told me we were going to be partners for the project. Then she sat her cute ass right next to me and just started working. I did not even get a word in, Wednesday, it was hell. She just sat there doing her work all cutely.” Enid refused to look anywhere but the ceiling well telling Wednesday. Normally she was talking to Wednesday back and that was easy. Right now Enid could feel Wednesday's eyes burning onto her face as she talked.
“So she worked next to you? That's all?”
“YES but it was just the little things dude. She voluntarily touched my arm to get my attention and I'm telling you she let it linger. You know this girl, she is not a physically touchy person. But I am. Ughh” Enid rubbed her hands up and down her arms as if giving herself a hug. “Then we just spent an hour making jokes and just existing next to each other. She even cracked some good jokes which are not her thing. But oh man Wednesday, she makes me laugh so much. The way I just feel around her. I feel so light and fluffy.” Enid knew this was bad. She never went this much into a story all at once. “Then after all that, she waited for me to pack up after class, and then! AND THEN she walked me to my next class.” Enid grabbed a pillow and pretended to suffocate herself well screaming into it. “She walked me to my next class and we don’t have the same next class. Well, technically we do both have monster biology next but we are in two different classes, oh but then she freaking came back and picked me up after class and we walked to lunch together. She just made it so simple. But like come on that means she at least a little bit thought about me throughout her class. And oh Wednesday when we walk and we walk past the window and the light just hits her eyes or her hair just right. It's magical. She pretends she just hates everyone and everything but I can tell she is warming up to me. Maybe it's not romantic but god I think I'm so in love with her I’d settle with just friends if it meant keeping her around for the rest of my life.” Enid huffed out a large breath and tried to catch up with her heartbeat and give herself a minute after talking so much. She waited for Wednesday to make a remark. Then Enid realized what she had just said. Three very big issues, Wednesday knows she walked with Enid to lunch, she said monster biology twice, and Enid just said she was in love with said girl. Enid has never slapped her hand over her mouth so fast. She was just an idiot. Her whole body felt on fire.
She sat up so violently and her eyes darted over to Wednesday searching to see if she realized Enid's mistakes. Oh Yoko was so so right.
“Enid we have Nevermore history together before monster biology then lunch. You do not have monster biology twice.” Wednesday stared right into Enid's eyes.
