Work Text:
Sabo and I sat at opposite sides of his desk. He was reading while I worked on responding to correspondence. Somehow that job always seemed to fall to me. Sabo insisted it was because I had the best handwriting, but in reality I think it was due to no one else wanting to.
I was in the middle of writing when everything went dark.
“Damnit,” I said.
“Power must be out,” Sabo said.
“Woah really?” I asked sarcastically.
I heard Sabo get up from his chair. Before I knew it I felt his hand on my shoulder and a light appeared next to me. I looked over to see fire coming from his fingertip like a lighter.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“I figured you’d want to finish your letter,” Sabo said.
“I would but we should probably go see if we can get the power going first,” I said, standing up as well.
When I tried to walk away, Sabo stood in front of me. He held the flame closer to my face.
“You know, your eyes look like honey in the firelight,” Sabo said.
“Wh-what?” I asked.
I could feel the heat rise in my face, but something told me it wasn’t from the fire.
“I noticed it the last time we trained together, but I wasn’t sure if it was from the fire or the sunlight,” Sabo said. “I wanted to see if I could see it again.”
“You could have asked,” I said.
“But if I would’ve asked then, we wouldn’t be having this moment now,” Sabo said.
“We’re having a moment?” I asked.
He glanced at my lips before looking back at my eyes.
“Aren’t we?” Sabo asked.
He started to lean in.
“In case you haven’t noticed, some of us are in the dark.”
Both of us jumped at the sound. Luckily I stepped back or Sabo’s flame probably would have singed my hair.
“Sorry, Koala,” I said. “We were just..well Sabo was just helping me finish one of my letters.”
“And I’m sure that’s why you’re not even facing the desk,” Koala said.
“Hey, now seems like a great time to get that power back on,” I said, quickly heading for the door.
Before I was out of earshot I heard them talking.
“You didn’t have to ruin that,” Sabo said.
“There wouldn’t have been anything to ruin if you’d just tell them how you feel,” Koala said.
“What do you think I was trying to do?” Sabo asked.
That was the last thing I heard before I turned the corner.
