Wilderness Survival With Anakin Skywalker

Summary:

With the crew stranded on some random planet with no sight of rescue for at least another few days, Anakin comes up with some interesting ideas for food. Lets just say that some are more receptive than others

Work Text:

This was not how the mission was supposed to go. They were stranded on some random planet in the mid rim that Ahsoka found unpronounceable, with very limited supplies, no way to contact help. Well, technically, that was a lie. There was no way to contact the republic unless you count the weird ‘communication device’ her master had strapped together with all the parts he could find. He had even sacrificed parts of his mechanical hand to do it! However there was still no sign of help for a while. Her master said Master Kenobi was not able to come for at least 2 more days due to travel, but assured her he was coming as fast as he could. Ahsoka got the feeling it wasn't her that her master was assuring. Anakin was very determined to not let them die, any of them.

There was still the issues of food, water and shelter. It was not just them stranded. It was also Rex, Kix, Fives, Echo and a few shines who had not gotten their names yet. That's where Master’s ‘wilderness survival class’ had started.

‘Ahsoka,’ Anakin asked, ‘What do you know about survival?’

‘Not much’ Ahsoka admitted. You'd think that with the current generation of padawans going into a literal war, they would at least inform students of survival skills even if they never used them. Unfortunately for Ahsoka, that class had been cancelled a few years before she and her fellow initiates became padawans because some genius had decided it was not necessary and Jedi would not need it.

‘Ok, we will work on that,’ Anakin quickly resolved. ‘First thing we need to do is find a clean water source.’

‘I saw a stream with clean water a few meters south sir,’ a shiny piped up

They made their way over to said stream and Anakin held up his left hand. He removed the glove from his flesh hand and ran his hand through the water and then declared the water safe. Ahsoka would have to learn how to do that.

With water sorted and the canteens refilled, their next issue was shelter.

‘Snips, what do you know about shelters’ Anakin asked as they started to wander off to somewhere

‘ Um, well It has to be stable, with no inhabitants, and preferably with sides, you know, like walls and stuff.’ Ahsoka told him. This information was definitely not from all the novels she had read when she had the privilege of obtaining them. ‘Like to say…’ Ahsoka looked around for a shelter, ‘that cave in that rock formation’

‘Very good. Well spotted snips.’ Anakin turned to the men and gestures for them to follow ‘lead the way snips’

A good half hour or so hike later had them at the mouth of the cave, Ahsoka went to step inside however she was held back by a hand, It belonged to captain Rex.

‘Never walk into a cave without a light source lil’ one’ He informed her.

Anakin and Ahsoka inspected the cave with the help of captain Rex. Having determined it safe, there was a unanimous decision to stay there. At least until they could travel further.

'Well that's water and shelter settled, what you got in mind for food?' Ahsoka asked once they had made camp in the cave.

it was then that Anakin had this grin, a grin that ahsoka would later recognize as the 'time to ruin someone's day' grin. 'You ever been hunting snips?'

----------------------------

Ok so it turns out that it was a lot more energy efficient to choke down a tasteless ration bar than hunt, but what Anakin was teaching was interesting to say the least. Ahsoka never thought there would be so many bugs on a planet!

'make sure you get plenty of centerpieces!' Anakin was instructing as she gathered more handfuls of various bugs

'You know Master, I've heard of people from other cultures eating bugs as a special meal,' Ahsoka reported as she picked through the various insects

' Oh yeah, These are great! Not everyone has the same apperication for these, and they don't taste like much without spices and other stuff though. You gotta cook em though, kills bacteria and all them nasties' Anakin was saying as they gathered the rest of their, well, Ashoka didn't know what it was. Anakin had called it 'grub' though, so Ahsoka would go with that. Grub it is.

Anakin took the grub. As he was doing this, ahsoka sensed something in the force. It was a creature of some sort, a big one. Anakin had an eager grin on his face as he turned toward the general direction of it.

------
Sometime later they were all siting around the makeshift fire pit they had made and were cooking the grub. Well, Anakin and Echo were instructing Ashoka on how to cook the grub. a couple of the shines were keeping watch, fives was 'keeping watch' of the already cooked food, Kix was watching carefully to make sure the food was cooked safely and wouldn't pose a health risk, and Rex was helping the other shines make camp.
When it came time to eat, Ashoka quickly discovered why her master had made that grin earlier. Apparently this had happened before and Rex was not a fan of Anakin's interesting meal plan. Personally, Ahsoka had no issue with it. Would she eat it if she had other options? No! of course not! However, because she was tagruta which is a species that traditionally would eat things such as 'grub' and many traditional recipes she had learned from Master Ti had included ingredients such as died insects, she had no real issue eating it. Anakin on the other had was thoroughly enjoying it as if he were a youngling with a delicious treat. Fives and Echo were also eating the grub. They also apparently enjoyed rustling up some grub every once in a while with their general.

As opposed to this was Captain Rex, who was refusing to eat it.

'Aww come on Rex! we cooked it and everything!' Anakin was complaining

Rex turned to Kix, who was the medic. Kix shrugged and replied 'if its been cooked over fire then there shouldn't be an issue as far as food hygiene is concerned'. Kix would know, he had watched them cook it.

Rex settled for a stale ration bar. Ashoka was somewhat disappointed that Rex wouldn't try the grub with the others, but at least he wouldnt starve. Now all that was left was to survive until Master Kenobi arrived with rescue.
