If that annoying Lawrence saw both Yu Yanfei and Hu Tao together, it usually wouldn't end on a nice note...
But that was only long before during their elementary days, especially before the classroom trial incident that nearly cost Hu Tao her horrible expulsion, her besties, and, in one perspective, her life. Now, Eula and Hu Tao maintained a cordial relationship, but some bitter emotions remained, as that incident's repercussions still rang loudly between all those who were present and affected that stormy day. Moreover, Eula's off studying abroad for her college, according to Yanfei.
In the end, those trials and tribulations mentioned were all in the past.
Back to the present, there they were.
On the newly renovated rooftop of their school, Tehiatik National High School, Legue Campus.
They stood on the same spot that stormy day, against each other and as the spring breeze blew past the two. Yanfei's light pink hair and Hu Tao's dark brown hair fluttered along the breeze.
"Taotao."
"Yeah, Feifei?"
"It's a big mystery, no?"
Hu Tao cutely hummed. "Which one, Feifei?"
"The more mysteries that get solved, newer mysteries just pop up, waiting to be solved. It's like there's no end to them. Y'know," Yanfei turned to the other side, frowning, "it's really a Sisyphean pursuit, don't you think?"
Hu Tao had a pensive face. She knew what Yanfei meant, since it was a well-known fact to the students of Class 12A that Yu Yanfei, the one before her and her long-time crush, wanted to become a prosecutor.
And in doing so, she'll have to face numerous cases, paperwork, and mysteries that require her big brain to solve. Yanfei seemed too stressed for the future, much to Hu Tao's worries, too.
But, isn't that the case for most of the work here in Tehiatik? And by extension, the world?
Hu Tao sighed and laid a hand on Yanfei's shoulder in an attempt to soothe the latter.
"Feifei, you of all people should know that it's not really the overall picture that you should focus on."
"What do you mean?"
"It's the journey."
Yanfei's eyes widened, as if she'd just dawned on the answer so simple, yet so succinct.
In its simplest and rudimentary analysis, all things in this world are repetitive, but look closely, you'll see that it's not entirely repetitive. Yanfei seemed to be blinded to this fact of life. She had to remember this in the future, perhaps even keep it close to her heart.
"Hai-ya, Feifei." Hu Tao grinned softly. "You really love to overthink things, even for those stuff that haven't happened yet, no? Guess that comes with your big brain, hee-hee~"
"I..." Yanfei couldn't help but chuckle. Hu Tao was right. "I guess so."
Then, Hu Tao had an earnest and reassuring look. "Feifei, promise me this."
"What is it, Taotao?"
Hu Tao held out her pinky finger.
"Promise me that when we finally graduate outta high school and college...
We'll have each others' backs when we face the real world.
Like... uh... our meals' rice and viand! Or, I dunno, two matching puzzle pieces!"
Yanfei giggled at Hu Tao's cute analogies.
"Do you promise me that, Future Prosecutor Yu Yanfei?"
Yanfei smiled, then put on an earnest and reassuring look as well.
"My name... is Yu Yanfei. And, with Rex Lapis as our witness, I solemnly promise you that, Future 77th Director Hu Tao."
Smiling, the two students then intertwined their pinkies together, forging a promise.
Even if the two would never end up together...
Even if the two were to be separated by the stars...
Even if the two had their bonds soured...
They they hoped that their promise would never, ever be broken.
