Human beings are made to be touched. It is part of the design of our flawed, fragile bodies, a web of nerves aching and responsive to the touch of another person.
The need for touch is like the need for food. One of our most basic needs, the lowest tier of the hierarchy. When people do not have food, they starve.
When people are not touched, they also starve.
Ushijima Wakatoshi is not someone who has been touched often. He was not held tenderly in his mother’s arms as a child. He never sought out the touch of others, and others do not generally dare to touch him. He did not understand this most basic of needs, because he never knew what it was to have it. Can you hunger for something you have never known?
