Work Text:
Once again Sonic was saying goodbye. There always came a goodbye. Time to go. Back to his world. Or. Anywhere really. Wherever the winds took him.
And here she would remain. Steadfast in her duties. Even if Sonic would tease her. Steadfast? More like going nowhere fast. Stop being so like Knuckles. You're too dedicated to the job.
Eventually though his teasings became less and less.
Sonic may not always understand. But at least he respected her position.
Although. Blaze didn't always understand either. How does one live without a duty? Without obligations? How does one simply go from day to day, not a care nor a plan for the future?
They were perhaps pointless questions. Yet she couldn't keep herself from wondering.
Once again he vanished back into his realm. When would they see each other again? It seemed to be an answer that wasn't hers to say. Blaze did not venture into the other realm unless it was an emergency. As for Sonic, he'd come by any given day or time that he'd like. Or on the rare emergency. But the answer of when seemed to always belong outside of her control. Be it the fate or will of the universes. Or just a lucky chance.
Yet even with the uncertainty of when, Blaze knew she would always see Sonic again.
She always looked forward to that eventual when.
Another cup of tea slowly cooled as late afternoon lazily drifted into an early evening. With warm winds and a blush pink crossing the sky. Yellow paint strokes scattered throughout served to keep Sonic on her mind. The pink and yellow conflicting and colliding. Seeming in opposition of one another yet also harmonious. Much like the adventure in which they met. Starting out in opposition. Yet working together in their Super and Burning forms together by the end.
Who would have ever guessed that all of that would lead to...what they are now.
It wasn't something they really spoke on much. But they knew it was there. Everyone knew in fact. And they talked. And they asked questions. And they talked some more.
And Sonic said let em talk.
Everyone thinks that they know us. But they know nothing about us.
Blaze couldn't agree more.
So they never addressed the questions and rumors.
After all. If they weren't calling their thing anything special, what could they possibly say to an outsider about it?
Everything about it. From the lavender haze to the stark moments in black and white, the good and the bad. All of it was theres. Whatever happened in between was no one else's business. Whether out and about or behind closed doors. In shades of gray and candlelight. Or in the brilliant midday rays. It had taken some getting used to certainly but she was now fully embraced in what her and Sonic had. And not caring at all what others thought or said. This was working. So what if it wasn't traditional? Tradition wasn't necessary. A label wasn't needed. It was just...them. And that was good enough for her.
The tea was brought to her lips finally. Perfect. The princess stretched out and turned away from the brilliant sky. More work had to be done. Always more to be done. This was her lot in life. Her duty she was proud of. She could spend all her life asking what ifs and questioning what her life would be like if the tables were turned. If she was a free spirit and Sonic were a noble prince or. Anything really. Any number of outcomes. Yet while the possibilities were entertaining to consider, they mattered not. This was this reality. She would work hard and stay committed to her people. And Sonic? Well he would do as he does. Come and go. Then come back again.
She smiled to herself as she sat back down at her desk.
This was their thing. And she wouldn't have it any other way.
