Work Text:

“Ah, hm, oh dear.”

Cody looked up from where he was scoping out the ‘fresher, most likely making sure there were no bugs or cameras, and came over to Obi-Wan. “Something wrong, sir?”

Obi-Wan hummed, stroking his beard. “Not wrong, per se, but I believe they may have mistakenly given us the wrong room.” Then he gestured to their bed situation.

Cody turned to Obi-Wan’s gesturing, eyebrows rising and falling quickly as he assessed their situation. “I see.”

“Yes, indeed.”

Their situation was, simply, that there was only one bed in the room they had rented for the night. Obi-Wan had wondered when he was talking with the hotel’s receptionist why she looked at them funnily before she offered them the room. Before he had chalked it up to the language barrier—he had just learned the basics that morning—but now he was wondering if it wasn’t something else.

He fought the blush coming to his cheeks at the implication of what the receptionist thought their relationship was like. Most likely she assumed they were…intimate in some way, which could not be farther from the truth, as far as Obi-Wan knew. He and his commander had a strictly professional relationship.

No matter how much Obi-Wan wanted it to be different.

“Well, then,” Cody began, “I’ll give you the bed, sir, and I’ll sleep on the floor.”

Obi-Wan scoffed. “Nonsense, I’ll take the floor, you can take the bed. The floor is far too uncomfortable for you.”

Cody stared at him, unamused. “Sir, I assure you, I’ve slept on worse. Take the bed.”

“And I assure you, Commander, that I’ve also slept on worse. However, since we’re both divided on this, I propose we share, since neither of us can decide.”

At that, Cody seemed to falter, choking on whatever he was going to say next. “S-sir, I couldn’t—no, I mean—sir, I will take the floor, please.”

“Cody, if you make me sleep on the bed, I will force myself onto the floor and Force-float you onto the bed.”

Cody just stared at him again, unamused, while Obi-Wan gave him a bright, innocent smile. Then he sighed. “Fine, you win, sir.”

Obi-Wan clapped his hands together. “Wonderful. Shall I take the ‘fresher first, or would you prefer it first?"

"You can have it first, sir.”

Obi-Wan conceded that to his commander, doing the perfunctory basics of hygiene before relinquishing the ‘fresher to Cody. He sat waiting on their shared bed while Cody used the ‘fresher, sinking into a light meditation to soothe his nerves. He opened his eyes once he heard Cody exit the ‘fresher, only for him to immediately regret it.

Water dripped from his black curls that Obi-Wan so rarely got to see, telling him that Cody had indulged in the water shower that was available to them. He had redressed in just his blacks, the tight fabric slightly wet, showing far more of Cody’s body than Obi-Wan had ever seen before. And his skin was still flushed and damp from his shower, as Obi-Wan watched a water droplet wall down his cheek.

“Everything alright, sir?”

Obi-Wan jerked his eyes away from where he was watching that water droplet run down Cody’s jaw. “Yes, of course. I was just meditating, is all.” The last thing he wanted was for Cody to thing he had changed his mind about their sleeping arrangements.

Cody nodded, once, then set about preparing himself for bed. Obi-Wan followed his direction, stripping out of his outer robes until he was left in his base tunic and leggings. He awkwardly hovered around their bed, waiting for either of them to make a move.

“How would we like to do this?” he asked.

“Would you mind if I took the side closest to the door, sir?”

“Of course not, if it makes you feel more comfortable, Cody.” Obi-Wan preferred to have his back to the wall, anyway, and appreciated having Cody between him and the door, should he face away. He climbed into the bed and under the blankets, facing toward the wall so Cody could have his privacy as he climbed in behind him.

“Goodnight, sir,” he heard from behind him.

“Goodnight, Cody.”

---

Obi-Wan awoke many hours later to a weight over his waist. He hummed, leaning back into the warm presence behind him, before he realized where he was. He wasn’t back at the temple in Quinlan’s room—no, he was on some backwater planet, sharing a bed with his commander. Who was currently spooning him.

Obi-Wan laid incredibly still, not wanting to disturb Cody for some much needed rest. At least, that’s what he told himself. It definitely wasn’t that he longed for his commander’s presence in a way that was definitely not professional in the slightest.

He must have moved slightly or did something jarring, because soon Cody’s breathing quickened out of its deep sleep breathing as he snuffled against the back of Obi-Wan’s neck.

“Mm, what time is it?” Cody grumbled.

Obi-Wan’s heart raced at the husky tinge to Cody’s voice as he woke from a deep sleep. He cleared his throat to settle his nerves before answering. “I believe early in the morning.”

Cody jerked behind him and his wonderful warmth left. “I’m so sorry, sir, I didn’t realize—.”

“It’s quite alright, Cody,” Obi-Wan interrupted, turning around so he could face him. “I didn’t mind. I assure you that you didn’t overstep any boundaries.”

Cody looked away, and if Obi-Wan looked closely, he could see the dark flush spreading down Cody’s neck. “I thought I was back on the ship with my brothers. We tend to—sleep in piles when there’s downtime.”

Obi-Wan smiled, soft and reassuring. “That sounds lovely. I used to do the same when I was younger with my crechemates. It gets harder as we get older, though that hasn’t stopped Quinlan from barging into my rooms before to demand cuddles.”

Cody blinked at him. “You willingly sleep with General Vos?”

Obi-Wan chuckled. “I know it may seem counterproductive, but Quinlan is quite docile when he’s asleep.”

“I’m sure some of my brothers could say the same about me,” Cody murmured, looking away. “Though Helix will be glad to know I was able to get you at least eight uninterrupted hours of sleep.”

Obi-Wan snorted. “Well, I’m sure Helix will be glad to know I was able to get you at least eight uninterrupted hours of sleep.”

Cody laughed at that, and Obi-Wan’s heart swelled at the light sound. “Then Helix will be glad at our mutual sleep, sir.”

“There’s no need to call me ‘sir’ right now, Cody,” Obi-Wan said, voice soft. “Not when it’s just the two of us here. Obi-Wan is fine.”

Cody gave him a shy smile in return. “Alright, sounds good, Obi-Wan.”

He was sure Cody could see the blush that spread across his face at the mention of his name. He cleared his throat, again, to dispel his nerves, and turned back around. “Goodnight again, Cody.”

“Goodnight, Obi-Wan,” came the soft reply.
