   Summary

   "In the world they were in, Ellie knew that you had to kill people to survive. It’s no surprise that she knew how to work a gun, or that she was able to stand up for herself, threaten violence if needed, but she had always thought that somehow, killing someone was off limits. You threaten, you never go through with it. She knew that Joel was violent too, that he had killed his fair share of people in order to protect her. It made Ellie feel sick. Especially when Joel would talk about Sarah like she was an angel. “She would never hurt a fly,” Joel would say when he talked about her, and his eyes would get all wistful.

   Ellie would hurt a fly. She had hurt worse than a fly. She had killed a man, bashed his face in with a cleaver. She wasn’t Sarah, and if Sarah was the one that Joel loved, maybe he was just pretending. Maybe he was scared of her, the way that she was scared of herself. Once upon a time, Ellie would have wanted that. Before she let Joel into her life, all she wanted was to be feared. She couldn’t let people know that she was a scared little girl too."
