Work Text:

From the moment you stepped out of your makeshift cabin and into the biting squall, you knew you should’ve stayed inside for the day. You looked up at the dull sky, your shadow hitting the unbroken snow.

Everything was quiet.

That was, of course, excluding the sound of the trees being fiercely shaken, and the voice of an extremely irritated individual. You stepped closer, knowing immediately who it was.

“Good morning, Alhaitham.” Your voice came out soft. You had to clear your throat a few times.

Alhaitham turned to face you with an indecipherable expression. He greeted you, standing up. With a raised eyebrow, you looked down at the jumble of snow on the ground that he had just been building. “What’s this?”

“I’ve been… making a snowman. But it looks more like an unorganized pile of snow, doesn’t it?” Alhaitham didn’t look very bothered, but you still decided to compliment him. It was definitely a good attempt.

“Your snowman is cute. I like it.” Your face broke into a wide smile as you pulled your scarf higher around your neck.

Was that the cold, or was he turning red? You decided it’d be better not to ask.

“Thank you, Traveler. You flatter me.”

Before you could reply, you noticed something shiny on the ground. You bent down, picking it up after struggling with your gloves.

The coin was double sided, with an F on the front. Curious, you eyed it for a few moments before handing it to Alhaitham. His hands brushed yours slightly as you pulled back.

“Strange. I’ve never seen this type of coin before.” Alhaitham put the coin in his coat pocket- for safekeeping, you presumed.

“I’ll have to look into it when I adventure to Fontaine, then.” You couldn’t help but feel a bit of dread brewing in your stomach as you spoke.

You abruptly snapped out of your thoughts and turned back to Alhaitham.

“Shall we head back inside, then?”

Alhaitham nodded, and you both turned away from the little snowman to head back into the cabin.
