Like Real People Do

Summary:

"Slowly last night's events filtered through her brain. The fight with her father, almost crashing on the drive here- but also the reassurances whispered into her hair, strong arms wrapping her up, the kiss. God, the kiss had actually happened."

Or Katherine wakes up beside the woman she loves and does something she has been wanting to do for years.

Notes:

I love these girls so much. I wrote this as a vague sapphic couple as a warmup in my writing class, and immediately thought of them.

Work Text:

She glanced around. She had no memory of the night before, and was confused where she was. There was a weight surrounding her. After a few more seconds, the fog of sleep had cleared. She had come here last night in a panic. Her face still felt gross from the dried tears, but she was too tired to care. Slowly last night's events filtered through her brain. The fight with her father, almost crashing on the drive here- but also the reassurances whispered into her hair, strong arms wrapping her up, the kiss.

God, the kiss had actually happened. That terrified her, but she was also elated. It wasn't anything special. It was uncoordinated, teeth clashed, and she had still been crying. She was scared, at first, about her best friend's reaction, but Sarah had smiled that smile that made her stomach do cartwheels, before kissing her head and giving her a gentle promise, “Tomorrow,” Sarah had whispered.

She had loved her for longer than she could remember, and was struggling to accept she had done that last night, and that it went well. If it hadn't been for the emotional, vulnerable state she was in, she likely wouldn't have done it. She had wanted her mind off of the events of the night, and when she looked at her like that, she couldn't help it. But now it was the next day, and her mind had cleared. She still didn't know what was in store for their relationship now, but she wasn't as worried anymore. The small “what if?” and the idea of her parent's reaction still occupied unwanted space in her mind, but the joy quieted it for now.

Under her, she felt a stirring. The grip around her tightened comfortingly. She lifted her head off the other girl's chest and looked up. A gentle smile overtook both of their faces.

“Hey,” was the only thing she could get out, and even that was quiet and breathless.

“Hey yourself,” Sarah leaned forward and left a soft kiss on Katherine’s nose, “you feeling any better?”

“A bit, but this is definitely helping,” Katherine replied, laying her head back down, listening to the other's heartbeat. Sarah let out a quiet giggle, and after a few seconds a comfortable silence fell over them. While she was happy, she couldn't make that nagging feeling go away.

“What are we?” she broke the lull. After a few seconds of thought from the other, a reply came,

“What do you want to be?”

Without hesitation, Katherine responded. She was so sure. She had wanted this for years.

“I want to be with you. I love you, Sarah.”

The other laced her fingers with her. She brought her knuckles up to her lips and left a kiss there.

“I love you too.”

For a moment, nothing else mattered.
