Work Text:

“Took you guys long enough.” Mikey watches as Raph fishes Leo out of the prison dimension, giving a vindicating wink to the Kraang before he closes the portal. It vanishes in a flurry of golden sparks, and Mikey rubs his hands tenderly. That would leave a mark. Still, Mikey would do it all again just to save Leo.

He looked over towards said turtle, Raph holding him to his chest. “Leo? Leo, speak to me.”

Leo pushes himself out of Raph's grasp, sitting on the floor with trembling legs. Mikey notices the blood pooling around him with alarm. “I’m fine, Raph, I’m just… tired. Hey, is it okay if I take a nap?”

“Absolutely not! Leo… Hamato Leonardo, do not go to sleep!” Donnie answers for Raph. He sounded harsh, but Mikey heard the relief and anxiety hidden beneath the bite. “Don, I don’t know if I can stay awake…” Leo yawns. “I’m trying…” Leo starts swaying, and Mikey rushes in to hold him before he falls backward. Leo grins at him weakly, a shadow of his more playful smile. "Thanks, 'Angelo."

Mikey turns to Raph, who was very obviously panicking. It's not that Mikey wasn't, but when Raph got like this, he tended to argue. Especially if it was Donnie.

“Donnie, take out your headphones, play some awful music for Leo, something he can’t fall asleep to!” Raph barked, scrambling to get someone to bring the turtle tank to them so Leo could get medical attention. “I’m trying, I’m trying! My headphones- They broke when I went into the Kraang ship, I…”
The arguing faded into background noise as soon as Mikey felt Leo grab his hand, gently rubbing circles into his palm. “Hey, Mikey?”

“Yeah, Leo?”
“...You know that one song Dad used to sing us? That sunshine one that Donnie always hated?” Leo half mumbles half speaks to him. Mikey holds Leo a little tighter and frowns. “Yeah… what about it?”
“... I dunno. I’m just thinking about it, I guess.” Leo sounded...

“Leo, stay awake.” Raph snaps, more anxiety in his tone than anger. “Yeah, yeah, I… I know, I just…” He turns to Mikey and puts a hand on his arm comfortingly. Leo's eyes looked bright, yet dim. He knew something that Mikey didn't, and as more time passed while Casey and Splinter drove the Tank, he got more anxious.

Leo seemed to notice this, though, and smiled. “Hey, hey, Mikey, it’ll… it’ll be alright.”

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…” Leo hummed but eventually began singing the words. “You make me happy, when skies are gray…”

Raph and Donnie looked to Leo, now sitting across from Mikey. Raph put a hand on Leo's arm, gently. "You're gonna be okay, Leo. Raph'll make sure of it."
He sounded more like he was trying to convince himself, rather than Leo.

“You’ll never know, Mikey, how much I love you…” Mikey laughed wetly, not expecting his name to be put in the song. It didn't sound right or go with the rhythm, but Mikey liked it anyway. They were long past the point where Mikey started to cry, tears now rolling down his cheeks and dripping onto Leo's plastron.

Leo's eyes have started fluttering shut.

“Please don’t take, my…” Leo coughs, breaths rattling in his chest. "My sunshine..."

He breathes out the last two words, a soft sigh. His hand falls from where it was holding Mikey's arm. His chest stops heaving. It's no longer rising and falling, and Mikey grips Leo's hand.
Mikey looks at Leo. He wants to beg. He wants to sob. He wants to hug Leo until he starts breathing again, until his heart keeps beating, until he's back and he's with his brothers.

"Please don't take my sunshine away..."
Mikey whispers.

He faintly hears Raph make a strangled noise, somewhere between a sob and a scream. Donnie is silent.

Mikey is silent, a wall of numbness blocking his feelings, before he wails.

Grief tears endlessly at his throat, and being torn limb from limb would hurt less than this. He can't stop thinking about it all. The last time he hugged Leo. The last time Leo cooked with him. The last time Leo skateboarded. The last time Leo would ever make a stupid joke that his other brothers would pretend to hate, but Mikey always liked. He screams, each breath fueling the next.

His big brother was gone. He would never come back.
