Summary
It was a good day. Things, for once, were going quite well, though not according to plan. That was alright, as mentioned, it was a good day.
Boris took the stairs. Carpeted with a low, grey pile, each step he climbed was filled with a long forgotten buoyancy that bubbled up through his chest, drawing an impossibly wide smile up through his throat and across his lips. These old hotels had tiny lifts which traveled slower than his practically bouncing feet could carry him. He didn’t mind the three flights he had to ascend, he would make quick work of them— he had waited ten years and he was done waiting.
There was a pressure in his chest that felt the very opposite of dying, but like the emptiness inside him had faded. There was a weight lifted from his mind and a lightness that hadn’t been there in far too long—
Was this what being happy felt like? Could this be joy?

Boris comes to tell Theo the good news about The Goldfinch to find him passed out on the floor and empty pill bottles on the dresser. He helps nurse Theo back to health and Theo gets pretty emotional in the middle of the night. -
