Curious Cat

Summary:

Chris Redfield is put in a tough spot when his daughter questions him about her existence.

Work Text:

Ever since little Y/d/n Redfield was born, she has always been a curious little cat about everything, her mind always wandering, constantly asking questions since the first time she was able to talk. Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Today was no different, it being a matter of where and how.

"Daddy, where did I come from?" She casually asks her father as she wraps her tiny digits around the handle of her plastic fork, sticking the prongs into the fun-sized cut pieces of pancake, taking a bite, patiently waiting for an answer.

"Where did you come from? What do you mean, sweetheart?" Chris Redfield knew damn well what his daughter meant, trying to prolong the question as much as possible until his mind quickly thinks up an appropriate answer on the spot.

"When I was bornt"

"Born, honey" I correct, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear

"Born" she repeats "Where did I come from when I was born?"

"Where did you come from when you were born?" There he goes again, answering his four year olds question with a question, stalling the inevitable

"Yeah"

"You came from mommies tummy" I answer, rolling my eyes at my husband

"Your tummy?"

I nod my head in confirmation as I take a sip of orange juice "Mhm"

"How did I get in there?" She aims the question back towards her father.

"Um..." Chris whips his head in my direction, puppy dog baby blue eyes pleading for help, begging for another answer.

"Nope" I reply to his desperation with a chuckle, grinning evilly "You're on your own from here on out, big guy. Good luck"

"Well" Chris dramatically clears his throat as he turns off the stove, placing his full attention on his child "You see, honey, when daddies are born they are born with a magic wand that they use with mommies to make a baby"

"A magic wand?" She inquires with awe "What does it look like?"

Particles of sweat begin to form on Chris' skin, his forehead glistening. For the first time, in a very long time, Chris Redfield was nervous. He fights dangerous monsters for a living and, yet, it is the curiosity of a four year old that instills the most fear in his body.

"It looks just like the wand the Disney Princesses use but without the star at the end"

My eyes open wide in surprise at his answer.

"Cool!" she bursts in excitement "I wanna see one up close!"

"Maybe in time, little one. The rule is, a lady can only see a magic wand when she grows up and meets another boy that daddy really likes and approves of"

"What happens if I see one before that?"

"If you see one before that, even on accident, legend has it that you will go blind, never able to see mommy or daddy or any of your favorite TV shows or movies ever again"

"No!" She cries in fear "I like to use my eyes to see!"

"Alright, that's enough talking about wands for today. Why don't you go upstairs and get ready for school, yeah?" I convey, gently rubbing the palm of my hand in an up and down motion against her back

"Okay" the small child lays down the fork against her plate and hops off the chair, scurrying with bare feet towards the stairs in the living room.

"So...A magic wand, huh Chris?"

"Yeah, you want to try and argue otherwise?"

"Hmmm" I muster in thought, thinking back to all the nights his magic wand really did work wonders on my body, making me feel and see things I never knew were possible "Sure, touché. I'll give you that one"

"That's what I thought" he retorts cockily "Daddy Redfield knows what he's doing"
