Chapter 1: 10 questions

Chapter Text

Sky sat on the dock shame in silence with a glare on her face as she stared into the void of water in front of her. Gentle raindrops started to fall on her but she didn't care. She liked the rain and the calm atmosphere.

She doesn't hear someone coming over as they stand beside her on the planks of wood.

"Hey." The person greeted her quietly so he wouldn't scare her. Unfortunately, that failed because it actually scared her

The sudden noise scares Sky and she pulls the person’s leg dragging them down and getting ready to punch them in the face.

"AH-" The taller yelps, raising his hands in defense in case the short girl hits him.

Sky glares at the person before her eyes soften as she realizes who it is.

"Trent?! What the hell don’t sneak up on me like that!" She yells

"Heh.. sorry." He apologized with a small genuine smile as she let go of him and sat down beside her

"Why are you sitting here?" He asked her, his voice laced with worry.

"Wanted to get away from everything." She answers in a tired tone

"In the rain?" He questions pessimistic

"Yes." She simply answered

"Well it wouldn't be such a smart idea once you get sick would it?"

She shrugged as she continued to stare ahead

"Look, if you have anything to talk about I'm all ears to listen." He reassured her with a soothing voice

Sky hesitated for a second before she finally whispered in a voice full of grief

"I saw everything... I saw Scott die right in front of me."

"It was scary wasn't it?" He quietly asked her

She nodded before she continued

"But what I feel most right now is guilt. I caused his injury to happen in the first place. I led Fang right to him."

Memories flashed of Scott's screams of agony as his lost foot got patched up back in the infirmary.

He didn't make it as he died from the amount of blood he lost from Fang biting his lower limbs.

Trent let her continue as she let out everything she could say in a whisper

"I was just so angry at the moment talking to Topher and then a damn shark showed up. I knew who he was looking for so I told him where to go. I’m not excusing what I did, but I am partly responsible for what happened tonight." Her voice cracked as tears started to appear in her eyes.

In an effort to comfort Sky, Trent placed his arm on her shoulder and looked into her eyes.

"It's not your fault, Sky. You had no way of knowing what would happen and it's not your responsibility to take the blame." He said gently with softened eyes. He continued on

"You didn't cause Scott's death, it was an unfortunate accident. You need to forgive yourself and let go of the guilt."

Sky finally turned her eyes away from the water and looked back at Trent. Her eyes are big with a few stray tears dripping onto her cheeks. She sniffled and wiped her cheeks to wipe away the teardrops as the gentle rain continued to pour.

She nodded in understanding his words as she looked down before her lips slowly lifted meaning Trent's comfort really helped.

"Thank you, Trent. I really needed that." She replied in a small voice

He nodded before standing up and offering her his hand.

"Glad to help. Now c'mon, let's get out of the rain before one of us gets sick." He replied in a gentle voice

Sky nodded before taking his hand and standing up after him.

It started to hail as it landed on both of them. Sky squinted and covered her eyes from the quick drops of rain.

"We better hurry and find shelter!" She yelled over the loud rain.

The taller nodded before running away, dragging Sky's hand as he tried to find cover.

"There! The boat house should do since it's the closest!" He yelled out so the short girl could hear

They ran to the boat house and arrived with Trent slamming the door shut as they panted in the quiet space.

There was a wooden barrel inside that Sky sat on. The smell of fish was evident in the air but it was tolerable to bear until the hail outside stopped.

"That came out of nowhere," Sky remarked after she relaxed a bit

"Yeah" He takes a deep breath to fully calm himself down

"So how long has it been raining again?" He asked as he looked out the window

"It’s been a while. I don’t know how long. Hopefully, it will stop soon." She replied.

Sky hugs herself now that she realizes how cold it is. "Ugh I know this was the closest place, but it’s dark and scary here." She comments as the chilly wind lingers around her body. She quickly hugged herself tighter to feel a sense of warmth.

"Well, it looks like we'll be in here for a while longer. Lucky thing for you, there's some matches and candles to keep us warm." He responded as he started working on lighting a match to light up the candles

"That will have to work for now." She quietly responds.

They both didn't feel much warmth once all the candles had been lit in their containers. It could only warm up one person.

"I forgot how candles wouldn't give too much heat." She laughed lightly

"It's alright. You can have all the warmth, I don't really feel so cold." He offers while placing them near Sky.

"Wa- wait! It's okay really, we can just share-" She tries to deny the offer but Trent insisted on it

"No, no I insist."

As a result, the candles gave a bit more warmth than before. Sky sighs in relief as her body doesn't shiver anymore and appreciates the heat.

"Thank you… again."

"No problem, I'll always be happy to help you."

The hail fell hard against the roof and thunder struck loudly. Sky flinched slightly at the violent sound of thunder from above.

"You okay?" Trent asked making sure she was alright

"Yeah, I'm sorry, that just came unexpectedly." She explained

Trent gave her a small smile

"Hey, it's alright we have a few fears. Maybe we could do something to pass the time?" He suggested in an attempt to make her feel better

(Scott from hell: JUST KISS ALREADY)

Sky thought for a second before she asked

"Hmm what about a game?"

"That'll do. What game?"

"I get to ask a question about you... and in return, you get to ask me one. Let’s say 5 questions each. Oh, and be honest." She suggested

"Yeah sure." He smiles warmly at her from the wall he stood against.

"Let's seee.. what was your family like back home?" She started first

"Well I'd say mine is great. I guess, they're pretty peaceful back there. My dad was the one who taught me how to play the guitar and my mom usually bakes cookies. I don't have any siblings but I am close with my cousin Emerson. I usually call her Emy." He answered with a soft smile appearing on his face at the thought of his family.

"Okay, my turn, what made you like sports?" Trent asked back

"Ooo a good one!"

"My answer is a bit simple, but my parents realized the potential I had as a little girl when they signed me up for soccer. I was the best player on the team. And then later on I would continue to play different sports and be great at them. But I also grew up watching the Olympics with my family. We really get into it." She answered mirroring his soft smile at the thought of her family

"Okay, my turn… What is your favorite genre of music?" She asked

"Ooh, I'd say rock and jazz would be my favorites. Oh and every indie genre. I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Smiths, and Elvis Presley. Follow along with Frank Sinatra." He answered with ease

"What's your favorite part about this place?"

"Definitely the friends I make along the way, but I do enjoy some of the challenges when they aren’t dangerous and in my skill area." Her smile falters slightly at the deadly challenges she had to endure. She quickly shakes her head before she asked her question

"What are your goals in life?"

"I don't know. Maybe become a wealthy solo musician and be a loving husband and father to a great family. I don't wanna be an accountant like how my dad expected me to be." He answered with a little bit of a grudge. He doesn't enjoy it when his dad always suggests a career he doesn't wish to pursue.

Don't get him wrong, he loves his father and he knows he has the brains for that kind of stuff but he just doesn't have any interest in it. He loves playing his guitar and would like to make a career out of it.

"I can see that kind of future for you." Sky told him with a fond smile

"Thank you. I can see a bright future for you too." He mirrors her expression as he continues on "What's your dream place?"

"Hard to say, but I’d like to move away from Canada definitely. Maybe Iceland because it’s so peaceful and pretty over there, but then again I do like warmer locations too. I can just imagine a big house up in the mountains with my two huskies. I'll also have all of my trophies on display to make someone jealous as they walk by. There would be music playing always because I wouldn’t have any neighbors." She replied a little bit spaced out thinking about her dream place with a smile on her face.

Trent laughs as she wanders a bit off track and watches as her spaced out expression.

"I think that's a wonderful place." He comments

Sky finally snaps out of it and came back to earth either a pink face out of embarrassment.

"Oh yeah, the last question…"

She quietly thinks of one before she hesitantly starts

"What... do you think of me?" Sky wonders if Trent thinks she is smart, funny, and someone who he would want to get to know better, either romantically or platonically. She genuinely doesn't know what his answer would be.

"I think you're pretty cool. You're a wonderful person and a great friend. I honestly wanted to be friends with you when I comforted you while you were anxious about this place." He confessed not telling the full truth as he looked away while rubbing his neck.

Sky feels just a tinge of sadness, but she doesn’t exactly know why. But she was still mostly happy though to hear him call her wonderful.

"I never expected becoming friends with you, but you’ve helped me feel so much." She confesses

Trent gives her a warm-hearted smile that warmth her whole heart as he replied
"You've helped me a lot too, Sky. You're probably one of the only people I'll open up too."

Sky noticed the pitter pattering of the rain stopped when they both finished their game.

"I think the rain finally stopped." The short girl told the other

"I think you're right." He opened the door to check and felt that the rain had really stopped. Sky came behind him as he nodded to her to confirm her guess.

"Alright well. Talk to you later?" The taller asked with a sheepish grin

"Yeah. I think it's best I go get some rest." She responded with a nod

"Okay, go easy on yourself. Okay?" He tells her as he begins to leave Sky at the boat house.

Sky sighs as she goes to sit back onto the wooden barrel from before, thinking back to their interaction with a funny feeling blooming inside her heart before someone became present as they walked in with a flashlight.

"Hellooo?" Kitty calls out as she points the flashlight directly onto the girl.

Sky quickly squinted her eyes and covered her face from the bright light.
"Hi Kitty" She greeted her

"Oh hey Sky! I saw Trent left. Am I intruding?-"

"Oh no! You're fine, We just- we needed a place to stay while the hail went on." She quickly interrupted to explain so there were no misconceptions

"Ah I see. The hail stopped 2 hours ago though." Kitty explained

".. it did?" Her face flushed as she didn't realize it ended sooner and most importantly they were in here longer than she thought.

"Mhm. Well anyways good-night!" Kitty goes to leave before Sky starts to stand up from the barrel she was sitting on

"Wait, I'm coming with you! Same team, same cabins." She catches up to Kitty as they both leave the boat house that was now filled with warmth and lights.
