Chapter Text
Emberkit stealthily approached her sister Fernkit, the gray kitten completely unaware of her orange pursuer. Amber eyes stayed focused as Emberkit slowly put one paw in front of the other until she was sure she had gotten close enough. The ginger tabby kit readied her body, wriggling in place before pouncing and colliding with Fernkit, causing both to tumble to the ground.
"Got you!" She announced proudly, pinning her sister to the floor. Mischievous green eyes regarded her for a moment before Fernkit suddenly reared up with her hindlegs, unbalancing Emberkit and shoving her over. Now their positions were reversed.
"Now I got you!" Fernkit meowed, looking very happy with herself. The two kittens stared at each other for a moment before breaking into giggles, Fernkit stepping to the side so Emberkit could get up.
It was a fun game the two were playing, trying to see who could surprise the other the most. Sure, they may have lost count along the way, but that didn't stop them from continuing their game. After all, there wasn't much else to do in YellowClan's camp.
Emberkit looked up at the yellow walls and white ceiling, squinting against the bright glowing lights. If she looked further, she could see the hallways and rooms that made up their home, all identical to each other. This was YellowClan's life, aimlessly wandering through empty areas until they found a type of room known as an 'oasis'. Overgrown with all sorts of plantlife and clean, fresh water to drink from. They would stay for awhile, hunting for food which usually consisted of small insects and spiders. They were always plentiful, crawling among the leaves and making an easy meal. Sometimes, mice would have made a home somewhere in the wall or fish would dart around the water, diving down deep before coming back up. No cat was allowed to swim alone, while the water looked shallow, it was much deeper than one could ever imagine.
The Clan had gotten lucky this time, finding an oasis with both mice and fish. Smokefang, one of the Clan's best hunters had even caught a bird yesterday, to the delight of her Clanmates. This was rare, usually they had to work hard to feed every cat, it was nice to get a small reprieve for a change.
Emberkit was nervous for the inevitable day that YellowClan would have to leave again, the prey wouldn't stay in such high numbers forever. She had been born in this oasis and there was no guarantee that all cats would survive the trek to the next. Yes there was food to be found outside the oasis but it was scarce and water was even harder to find. Not to mention the dangers.
Most rooms were simple, yellow walls and floor with a white ceiling. But sometimes, a strange thick mist would hang about, obscuring everything from sight. These mist clouds moved from room to room, never staying in one place for long. It had been drilled into every kit's head that if they ever saw the mist, they must warn the Clan immediately and never, ever go in. Cats that tried to brave the mist disappeared without a trace, never to be seen again.
Other rooms had weird scribbles on the walls, all the way to the top, and while they were technically safe, it always made every cat feel uneasy. If they slept in those rooms, nightmare would strike, leaving many exhausted the next day.
But the most dangerous thing to encounter were the shadow creatures, figures that looked just like cats from afar but clearly had something off about them. Once a creature spotted you, they would relentlessly chase their prey until they either lost you or managed to find your way to an oasis or a scribble room. The shadows never dared to venture inside.
Emberkit was ripped out of her thoughts by her mother's call, rushing over with Fernkit following close behind. Two mice were dangling from Mothheart's jaws, the gray and ginger she-cat laying them down for her daughters to eat. She curled around the kittens, purring up a storm as they finished their meal and nuzzled closer, ready for a nap.
