Work Text:

Blaze absent-mindedly fidgeted with her hands, uncomfortably tapping her thumbs together as Amy looked through a folder filled with files only a few inches away from her. Mumbling frustrated "where is it" 's as she sorted through them. Every few seconds, Blaze snuck a glance at Amy, watching her attempt to weed out the paper she'd been looking for before quickly averting her gaze again. Though, it wasn't long before Amy noticed, catching Blaze in an unlucky shot to study her without her detection.

Their eyes met, and Blaze's eyes shot in the other direction in the desperate hope that the pink hedgehog didn't see.

"Is something wrong, Blaze?" Amy asked as she lowered her catalog of files, turning her head to face the cat next to her.

A shudder shot up Blaze's spine. Chaos damn it. she cursed at herself mentally, timidly returning her gaze to fixate on Amy again. "Uhm... Yes."

Amy sighed, rubbing her temples, "Sorry this is taking so long. I swear I saw this thing in here somewhere!"

Blaze's hands shot up, nervously waving them around like flustered butterflies while she shook her head. "Oh no, please! All is fine, I-I just..."

With her interest officially peaked, Amy placed the folder aside. "What is it?" She questioned, cocking her head to the side like a confused puppy, watching Blaze with mildly concerned eyes.

Blaze had to pretend that she didn't find that cute.

"I-Uhm-You-" Blaze inhaled, before exhaling shakily, trying to steady herself. Nerves shot through her body like flickers of fire. She turned her head to the side, involuntarily hiding from the pressure. "You...are the one I believe is the most knowledgeable about this topic." She hesitantly glanced back at Amy, only to find worried yet huge curious eyes staring back at her.

A gentle hand landed on Blaze's shoulder, attempting to reassure her all was well, but Blaze could feel her cheeks flaring up at the touch. She turned her head away again, flustered, and almost comically gulped.

"How-" She paused. "How does one know they are in...love?" The last word in that sentence unintentionally came out as a nearly breathless whisper. The purple cat's lips quivered and she felt her cheeks continue to brighten just with the mention of the word.

Of course she was embarrassed. It was not every day she of all people brought up the subject. Unluckily or ironically for her, however, it was also not a common occurrence to be asking your crush about how it felt to be in love.

Blaze's eyes widened and she whipped her head around as she heard a giggle erupt from the girl beside her, the other's hand slipping off her shoulder in the process.

Blaze also had to pretend she wasn't sad to feel the comforting touch flee.

"Ohhh! Is that it?" A chuckle emanated from the pink hedgehog before she stopped to think for a moment, her eyes wandering to stare at the wall across them. "Well...Love is different for everyone. But, if you had to ask me..."

Her sentence trailed off, and Blaze watched as she fiddled with the folder laying next to her, rubbing the plastic between her fingers; focused, trying to find the right words. Her legs kicked passively over the edge of the bed they sat on.

After a passing moment, Amy continued. "Being in love feels like…you're laying in a field of roses. Watching butterflies swarm around you as the sun sets. It's so warm and comforting, and endearing... And it's almost like," Amy returns her gaze to Blaze, her sparkling green eyes now lidded and a slight tint of pink speckled along her muzzle that highlighted her soft smile. "You never want to leave."

Blaze's breath hitched in her throat from the sight, but before she could even begin to process how to properly react, Amy scooted closer to her, closing the already small distance between them.

The smaller girl's eyes locked with hers, and she rested her chin on Blaze's shoulder. She placed a tender hand atop Blaze's leg before spawning a question that was sure to make Blaze implode the second she heard it.

"Do...Do you like someone, Blaze?"

And implode she did.

Fire raced through Blaze's body, shooting to the tips of her fingers, to the ends of her ponytail, and the split ends of her tail. Flames burst and crackled, the purple cat's fur naturally combined with the burning fire now exerting out of it.

Blaze forgot how to breathe, no, she forgot how to exist. The only tangible thing she could register was the inextinguishable fire rupturing from the ends of her fur and the burning feeling spreading throughout not only her face but her whole body. She knew Amy was staring at her-she could feel it-but both her body and her brain were malfunctioning.
"I-I don't. Uhm- Well- You see- I-" Blaze finally sputtered.

Another delicate touch to Blaze's shoulder and the sound of a disturbingly saccharine chortle managed to snap Blaze out of the daze that was about to take over her mind. "Hehe...I'm sorry. I'm only teasing. I didn't mean to fluster you like that." She mewled as she gently started to rub Blaze's back, watching with what Blaze could've sworn was a mischievous twinkle in her eyes as she managed to start soothing the fire raging from Blaze's fur.

Blaze could feel her heart slowing and her fur returning to normal as Amy (who was still pressed against her, though Blaze was too distracted to notice) compassionately ran her hands along her back, but the flush in her cheeks and the almost dizzying feeling of the blood that rushed to her head coming back down remained.

Amy's hands ghosted up Blaze's shoulders and trailed circles around a spot she knew Blaze liked, and soon Blaze found herself comfortable enough to close her eyes, sighing as she leaned into the pink hedgehog's calming touch. A purr arising from her throat instinctively without her noticing.

They sat like this for a while, pressed together while Amy apologetically comforted the other girl. Neither of them was mildly aware of the time that passed by as they got lost in the presence of the other.

"Hey Blaze?" Amy started, interrupting the comforting tranquility, and putting a tragic halt to her touches. Blaze let out a quiet, unhappy murr as Amy withdrew her hand.

"Mm?"

"Can I ask... who you like?"

Blaze's eyes shot open, and she quickly found herself drowning in a flurry of thoughts and options. Should she tell her? No, what if she hates her afterward? But, Amy would never, no matter if she reciprocated or not. But- But- But. Blaze could feel her vision starting to blank out, her sights being replaced by countless outcomes and possibilities instead.

But, a small urgent thought managed to peek through the rest. It's now or never, Blaze.

As Blaze felt her eyesight return, she tentatively turned to face Amy, seeing that Amy was staring at her while thoughts and decisions whirled through her head. She looked as patient and as sweet and as beautiful as she always did–her head propped up against her shoulder, a worried expression painted across her face as she looked up at her expectantly--but Blaze noticed she also seemed...just as nervous as Blaze felt. There was an almost anxious glint in her eyes, and Blaze took note of the way she obliviously resumed messing with the corner of the long-forgotten Restoration folder.

But her thoughts were interrupted. The princess could suddenly feel a heavy weight already clutching her chest once she refocused. As if she was dropped into the ocean and left for dead. Her heart was thumping in her ears and ached like it was moments away from bursting. Everything around the two of them seemed to be nothing but a blur now.

Apparently, enough time had passed for Amy to get concerned and she tried to redirect the conversation.

"Hey...You-You don't have to-"

"No." She cut her off. Blaze inhaled heavily, before letting out a very tense sigh. "Amy-" Blaze began but she didn't have words to continue.

Amy pressed her hand atop Blaze's and gave it a reassuring squeeze, giving Blaze the courage to go on but not before Blaze intertwined their fingers together and squeezed back. "I-I…have feelings for you Amy. And-And it feels exactly how you described it. Though…Though, instead, the roses are on fire, and so is everything else. I feel as if I'm drowning in the most unbearable, inescapable heat. But, it feels so, so right. It feels like I never want to leave.

"Blaze-"

"Amy, you stole my heart the day we met, and you have squeezed its contents out. But even if nothing remains, I still find a way to give you the sheer amount of love I feel for you. And I- I-"

"Blaze-"

"I'm rambling, oh I am rambling...I do not know how to stop, quietBlazebequiet-"

"Blaze!"

Blaze clapped her other hand over her mouth. Her face as red as it could possibly be, and tiny bursts of flame flickered from her fur every now and then, threatening to explode into another savage fire.

As Blaze finally focused, she realized Amy looked just as red-faced and exasperated.

Amy smiled nervously once they made eye contact."Uhm, you're squeezing my hand really hard." Blaze looked down at their hands, Amy rubbing the side of her hand with her free thumb to emphasize that she had locked Amy's hand in with a fierce iron grip sometime during her confession.

"Oh! Oh Chaos, I'm sorry! I didn't realize!" She cried, freeing Amy's hand from her dastardly clutch. Amy rubbed her sore hand upon release and for what Blaze thought was a disgustingly long period of time, the two stared at each other. Blaze not knowing what to do, and Amy was now seemingly lost in thought. Her eye ridges furrowed in a way that made Blaze's tail swish back and forth anxiously.

"I'm sorry if I-" Blaze started to apologize, under the impression that she had just blown her shot with both her crush and one of her closest friends. Her ears canted back as she readied her sorries.

But Amy had unexpectedly intercepted Blaze's speech, with a tone that made everything seem like it had finally clicked into place for her, or like she just thought of the most amazing idea man has ever conceived. "You like me?"

Blaze blinked, bewildered, but turned her head away in a mix of embarrassment and shame. "Yes..." She whispered. "It's okay if the feeling isn't mutual, I am sorry if I ruined anything."

Amy gaped at Blaze for another agonizingly long moment. Blaze realized she was starting to feel nauseous from the adrenaline wearing off and the anxiety replacing it. The look on the pink girl's face was unreadable, and Blaze didn't know what to do or what to respond with other than unsure and vague apologies in case Amy was too shocked by the now hanging confession.

"Holy shit, Sonic was right!" Blaze watched in astonishment (partly because Amy cursed, but there was no time to dwell on it.) as Amy's face brightened and a grin spread along her face. Amy turned her whole body to face Blaze, grabbing her hands and clutching them in hers.

Blaze could feel her cheeks flush, but she froze as Amy started shaking Blaze's hands up and down."You- you like me! Oh my God! I thought he was lying!"

"A-Amy? Amy, wait, I'm confused!" Blaze yelped while Amy shook her around excitedly.

Amy stopped manhandling Blaze but pressed their tangled hands to her chest and looked Blaze directly in the eyes. Her smile was so earnest and delighted; a red flush decorated her muzzle, amplifying the effect. Blaze wasn't sure how that smile hadn't killed her.

"Blaze! I've had a crush on you for like ever!"

What. She What?

"You What?"

Amy took a deep breath, attempting to control herself, but Blaze could still see that she was trembling with excitement despite forcing her body to calm down. Her hands shook against hers and that pretty pink tail wagged back and forth with glee.

"Hooh…okay. Blaze. I like you, a lot. You're like a guiding star that led me in the right direction. I mean, I set out to share a love that transcended time and space, and…here you are. A girl from another dimension who made me realize what it truly felt to be in love."

Tears pricked the corner of Amy's eyes, and Blaze knew that those words had another meaning she wasn't aware of. But, just as Amy had done for her, she pushed down her increasing excitement and the feeling that her heart was moments from exploding, and gently rubbed circles along Amy's hands, comforting her as she made her heart known to the girl in front of her.

Amy let out a shaky, happy sigh, the mixed bag of emotions she felt present in her body language. Blaze carefully peeled their hands apart, and instead wrapped her arms around a sentimental Amy, pulling her onto her lap and into her embrace. She snorted as she watched Amy's tail wag despite it all.

Amy buried her face in the crook of Blaze's neck. "I am literally so in love with you, Blaze."

"I sure hope so." Blaze chuckled, now playing with the fabric of Amy's dress.

A beat played before either of them said something, relishing in the mutual feeling afterglow.

"Amy? What did you mean by 'Sonic was right?'" Blaze questioned, breaking the silence.

"Oh!" Amy pulled away from Blaze's arms, a bright smile once again adorning her face. "Sonic let slip that you liked me."

Blaze's eye and ear twitched. An exasperatedly, annoyed expression frown splayed across her muzzle. "Remind me not to tell him anything ever again." She huffed.

She couldn't stay annoyed for long however, annoyance being instantly replaced by adoration as Amy giggled at her newfound resentment.

Another comfortable silence engulfed the two. A loving stare being shared between the both of them. Though, a rather bold question came to Blaze's mind. But hell, she's gotten this far, and the adrenaline and endorphins gave her a delusional amount of confidence.

"Amy?"

"Mhm?"

"Can…Can I kiss you?"

"Oh God I thought you'd never ask." Amy heaved a euphoric sigh of relief, enthusiastically and impatiently tilting Blaze's chin upwards.

And just like that, Amy closed the last few inches between them and pressed her lips against Blaze's.

Maybe it wasn't perfect, their inexperience combined said it wasn't, but at least to Blaze it was. Amy's lips were soft and slightly chapped, but their kiss was delicate, slow, and gentle. The opposite of what they had both been feeling up to this point. A hazy serenity between them making up for the anxiety-ridden minutes from before.

When Amy pulled away after a few moments, the girls goggled at one another, processing what had just happened. Blaze brought a hand to her lips, tracing where the pink hedgehog's were seconds ago in disbelief.

"Holy shit." She breathlessly murmured, her turn to uncharacteristically curse.

Amy burst out into laughter, those sweet dulcet tones eliciting a similar giggle from Blaze, before she couldn't withstand all of the joy and rushed to press her lips against Amy's again, with a surprised mewl but no opposition as a response while she returned the effort.

They laughed against each other's lips before Amy suddenly leaned back and pulled Blaze with her, earning a surprised "Oh!" They fell onto the very forgotten Restoration folder. Some papers scattering out from the wind of their fall.

Their giggle fit lasted only a few moments more before slowly fading out into cherished new memories.

"Is…Is it okay to say I love you?" Blaze asked, propping herself up on Amy's chest.

Amy looked at the cat laying on her, caught in the mix of their tangled limbs, and let out a fluttery sigh. "Of course."

Blaze smiled, found one of Amy's hands, and intertwined their fingers. "Then, I love you, Amy."

"I love you too, Blaze."

Blaze once again found herself comfortable enough to close her eyes, taking in the faint scent of strawberries
and peaches from the hedgehog underneath her.

She felt Amy shift, pick up a paper, and gasp. "Hey! I found it!"
