Chapter 1: The Gift of Parsnips

Chapter Text

Ochako jumped out of her chair when there was a banging on her door. She was honestly surprised the thing didn't fall right off its hinges from the force.

"Cheeks,” Katsuki said through the door. “Kirishima said to give this to you."

Ochako nodded to herself, of course it would be Katsuki being so loud.

Of course…it’d be…

She opened the door. “Katsuki?” She gave him a puzzled look, tilting her head to the side. “What are you doing here?” He’s never visited her room before. The two of them barely even spoke.

He stood with one hand deep in his pocket, the other shoving a book into her hands. “Here.”

It took her a few seconds to look at the book, still in shock at Katsuki being in her doorway.

He gave her an expectant look.

“Oh, right,” she said, looking at the cover and seeing the book she and Kirishima had been talking about at lunch. “Thank you!”

He rolled his eyes. “Don’t know why I have to be a goddamn messenger boy.”

Ochako rubbed the back of her head. “I’m surprised Kirishima didn’t just give it to me tomorrow at class, but this works too.”

“What in the hell is that fucking sound?” Katsuki snapped, ignoring her response and looking past her into the room.

Ochako puffed out her cheeks at the fact that he could just look over her head like that. “It’s a game.”

She watched as a look of confusion overtook his face.

“You game?” he asked, an eyebrow raised.

“Yup!” Ochako walked to her bed and picked up the switch Mina was letting her borrow. “It’s called Stardew Valley.” She turned the screen so Katsuki could see it.

“Never heard of it,” he deadpanned, looking at the screen as if it were a smelly sock.

Undeterred by his normal bad attitude, she said, “It’s really fun! You get to grow crops, and the animals are adorable-”

“Pass,” he said, putting his other hand into his pocket. “Why aren’t you playing a real fuckin’ game?”

Ochako huffed. “This is a-” She used her fingers as air quotes. “Real fuckin’ game.”

Katsuki’s eyes lit up. “Wow, Cheeks. Didn’t think you had it in ya.”

“What?” she asked.

“Swearin’,” he said. “Thought you were too good for it.”

She tossed the switch back onto her bed before turning back to face him. “Was there something else? Or are you just staying to make fun of me?”

Katsuki rolled his eyes and turned around. “Fuck it, I gave you the book, I’m outta here.”

A rumble came from the bed, and Ochako turned to see the switch start to glow.

“What the-”

She was cut off by a blinding light, her body in a free fall. She touched her leg, trying to stop herself from plummeting through this warped space, but her quirk didn’t activate.

She went to try again, but landed on a patch of tall grass, the wind knocked out of her.

Groaning, she pushed off the ground to see Katsuki land next to her.

“Fuuuuck,” he groaned before scrambling to his feet. “What the hell was that?!”

Ochako blinked and shook her head before taking in their surroundings. Trees and rocks littered the area while not too far were a few creeks. The water ran at a lazy pace.

A cabin wasn’t too far, it looked run down and in need of more than a few repairs.

“Let’s see if anyone is home,” she said, pushing her way through the overgrown grass. “Maybe they can help us out.”

“How the fuck did we get teleported?” Katsuki asked, following her.

Birds chirped in the distance and some butterflies danced on the breeze.

“Well,” Ochako said. “At least this place is nice. We could’ve ended up somewhere terrible.”

“This place is terrible,” Katsuki yelled as he stomped passed her, up the few stairs and banged his fist against the door.

“You’re gonna break a door one of these days if you keep knocking like that,” Ochako said, arms akimbo.

“Huh?” Katsuki turned to look at her with a crazed look on his face.

The door swung open. “Oh, there you are. You’re here earlier than I expected.”

Standing in the door frame was an older man with gray hair and a large mustache. He wore a brown cap, green shirt and suspenders.

“Come on in, I’ll show you the cottage,” he said, leaving the door open for them to follow.

Ochako stared at the man, her heart beating loudly in her ears.

No, this wasn’t…

“Where are we old man?” Katsuki demanded as he walked inside. “You better start talkin’!”

Before following, Ochako turned around, eyes sweeping the area a second time.

It couldn’t be…

“Don’t you know?” the man said. “You took the bus to get here after all.”

“Bus?” Katsuki asked. “What bus?”

Ochako hurried into the cottage to see Katsuki fuming a foot away from the man.

“Katsuki, I think this is-”

“Why the bus to bring you to Stardew Valley, son.”

A silence fell upon the small space, Ochako’s heart continued to pound in her ears. She could swear Katsuki stopped breathing, his face started to turn red.

“And I’m the mayor,” he said. “The name’s Lewis.”

“Um,” Ochako started, but didn’t know where to go from there.

“Here you go,” Lewis said. “Something to start you off.”

He put a box of seeds on the ground in front of Katsuki, who was still malfunctioning.

“Must be off,” Lewis said. “Oh, and before I forget, there’s a box outside. You can use it to ship items and I’ll collect them everyday. Happy farming!”

Lewis shut the door and the silence crept back over them.

Ochako’s hands went to her face, her eyes wide and unblinking as she stared at the box by Katsuki's feet. She knew it was a bunch of parsnips without even opening the thing.

“Katsuki, I think-”

“THE FUCK???”
