Work Text:

Mona banged her head against the wall. It was her god knows how manieth time she was experiencing the same stupid wedding day. Did the gods hate her or something? How many more times did she have to sit through the same ceremony and congratulate the newly weds and watch them love each other like she's not been in love with the groom for years.

Yet again she sat by her desk, scryglass in hand, trying her hardest to look for a solution. But nothing. As always. No matter how many times and whose future she tried to look into. Nothing that would let her know how to stop the stupid loop.

She let out a line of curses when she threw the damned glass at a wall. Nothing, again. And it wasn't like it was going to stay broken. Only two more hours. That ugly hag would be bound to him. She'd lose the love of her life.

What if she tried objecting? She was certain she'd tried it at least thrice already, but it wasn't like she had any other ideas. She got ready for the wedding as usual, and prayed. Prayed to any god that hated her guts any less to let her free.

The way to the church was the same as always. Nothing was different. As per usual Mona spent her time trying to think of new ways of fixing things. What if she didn't show up at all and Cyno came looking for her? Or if she met him before the ceremony? Was there something wrong with the bride?

She sat down. The church was full, and everyone was being the same as always. Nothing notable no matter how many times she observed them. Even the bride walked down the aisle the same as always. Confident in her steps and as gorgeous as always. Her red hair was clearly something she valued.

Mona sighed, waiting patiently for the right moment to swoop in and pretend to save the day.

And….

She was back in her room. In her stupid, same room with the same damned scryglass in one piece again. Nothing had changed, she'd messed up. Should she have stood up earlier? Was it even worth trying again? She had no idea, and the hued up glass didn't help her one bit. It was even the fastest she'd been thrown back?

"Gods… I guess it's just trying again." She rolled her eyes, throwing the glass for pure funsies at this point. She was unusually calm, but maybe it was just because she already had a plan.

She did all the same as usually, ending up in the church, watching the bride walk down. And much earlier than last time she stood up. "I obj-"

Right back at the start. Record timing as well...

She did a small hand performance to mock her conversation with whichever god was behind this, using the most annoying tone possible for said god. She was surprised she wasn't right back at the beginning for that alone.

She sighed. Objecting wasn't the right thing to do, just like she'd remembered. What else could it have been? She decided to just skip the entire ceremony this time. What if that was the key?

Time went on for longer than usually, but eventually she watched the clock tick right back into her starting point. She was starting to get tired of the constant trial and error this stupid thing was.

What was there to even do anymore? Treat it like a normal day? Treat it like her love isn't getting sold to someone else? Like she hasn't been watching it happen 15000 times already, her insides feeling like they were going to rip apart every single time? She thought it was a stupid idea, awful even.

She even kept chastening herself over it while walking into the forest to gather some herbs she was supposed to get more of that day, but never did due to the very obvious.

It was a clear evening, the sunset was bringt and the sky was gorgeous. There was barely any wind either. She was certain this was the wrong choice. Why on earth would this have worked but not doing anything wouldn't have? It made no sense, but it wasn't like she was in a hurry.

And neither was the huge ogre looking monster that ended up surprising her and taking her hostage… Oh brother. There she was now. Stuck in a surprisingly sturdy cage. What a day to be alive.

Though, she did notice that time hadn't reset yet, and it was getting dar- oh.

"Nevermind then" Mona huffed, finding herself from the middle of her room once more. She was certain she was on the right track, as that was the furthest the night had lasted. Once more, right?

Once more she left her house, this time leaving the scry glass into full pieces, and wandering into the forest. It was still a perfect evening, one she would've loved to spend with Cyno, just walking and refusing to laugh at his awful jokes….

She screamed this time, as she'd been lost in her thoughts for a little too long. The monster had got her again, and it most definitely didn't like her screaming. It shook her a little, and threw into the same cage much more aggressively.

Mona groaned while the monster paced around. Yelling was alright! Nothing had restarted because she was yelling, right??

She screamed for help like she'd never screamed before, and after what felt like hours, lightning finally hit the monster. Mona jolted right back into high spirits as she watched Cyno battle the huge brute, and cheered once he won.

It'd been an exhausting day, and as soon as Cyno opened her cage, she hugged him. Carefully, as if his wife would just turn up to stab her.

"Are you alright? Did I take too long?" Cyno asked in a serious tone, the worry in his voice obvious, though he tried to hide it in his usual dutiful voice. "Are you hurt?" He kept questioning, placing his hands on Mona's shoulder.

Mona gave him a reassuring smile. "I'm just shaken up a bit," it was a good joke, a funny one even, and the thought of Cyno laughing in this situation was delightful. Though he didn't seem to get the joke, instead he was looking around for any clues of harm.

"Cyno," Mona spoke fairly firmly, wanting his attention off of any possible little bruise. "Why are you here, anyway?" She questioned instead. He was here, saving her, instead of attending his own wedding.

"Oh. You weren't there," Cyno stazed with a few blinks like it was the most obvious answer. "The Mona the merrier, y'know," he folded his arms in front of his chest, clearly proud of his joke.

Mona wanted to slap him. In a good way of course. She sighed in disappointment, placing her hands on her hips. "Haha." She most definitely wasn't amused. She even rolled her eyes. "It wasn't my intention to get caught like that," she huffed, though, of course it was. The day hadn't reset yet.

Cyno gave her a smile, and oh was it a smile to die for. "The most important thing is that you're alright," he nodded, offering his arm for them to walk back. Mona took up his offer and started walking.

"What about your bride?" Mona had so many questions, in all honesty. She couldn't just look it up right now. Cyno looked like he hadn't even thought about it yet.

They both stared up at the sky in silence for what felt like Hours, but, again, in a nice way. Cyno finally broke the silence. "I didn't think about that," he said slowly, looking down to see her looking right back. "You should be at our wedding so I can focus on my bride,"
