brunch in the east village

Summary:

"So."

"So?" Jess looked up from the flimsy paper menu, text already blurred from water stains.

"So. How's the rabbit?"

"Oh, fuck you."

Notes:

inspired by some interview or tweet where juliana canfield talked about jess going for brunch on her days off + my prayer circle for jess tabs and stewy to all get more screentime in s4.

self-indulgent. shamelessly ooc. enjoy.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"So."

"So?" Jess looked up from the flimsy paper menu, text already blurred from water stains.

"So. How's the rabbit?"

"Oh, fuck you."

Tabitha was not to be trusted with confidential work information, apparently. If these mimosas weren't $10 each, Jess might throw one in her face. She still might.

"Still very dead." She gave Tabitha a pointed look before returning to browse the waffle options. "Thank you very much for asking."

"Funeral arrangements?"

Jess flipped to the other side. $18 for a side of hashbrowns. "Would you like to make them?"

"Honestly? I'm bored. Roman's been MIA for like, a month. Send me the details."

"I literally honestly will."

Usually their weekly brunches were someplace at least halfway decent, and sometimes amazing, but this place was a complete mess. Bland food with nonsense names and highway robbery prices, uncomfortable chairs, last year's pop hits turned way too loud, unsettlingly sticky floors, window view blocked by sidewalk construction in full, noisy swing, and, from looking around at the other tiny tables, possibly the smallest mimosa glasses Jess had ever seen in her life.

A huff of frustration from Tabitha. "Wanna get coffee to go and then go someplace with actual edible food?"

"Please." Jess was more than happy to crumple up the menu and look at Tabitha's near-perpetually cheery face. "Remind me why we let him choose the brunch location again?"

"Speak of the devil." Tabitha pointed behind her. "Let's just leave before he starts stealing pastries and gets us banned again." She stood up. "Sadegh!"

Jess gathered her bags, glancing at her phone to check for further animal murder perpetuated by Kendall – once confirmed clear – "IHOP three blocks away?"

Tabitha's grin was dazzling. "You're reading my mind."
