Hold My Hand On This Night

Summary:

Thing crawls over to Enid's desk. "Haven’t you noticed? Something has been on Wednesday's mind for the past few days." It signals.

"I haven't noticed anything, what do you mean?"

“Just look at her.” Thing pointed to Wednesday sitting at her desk, typing aggressively. She was focused and had a facial expression of frustration. It was like something was upsetting her, and no matter how hard she tried to ignore it, it kept staying in her mind. Enid could see what Thing meant.

or, Wednesday is having trouble finding a date for Nevermore’s next dance, and has no idea that her roommate Enid is going through the same situation.

Notes:

I think I witnessed two girls I knew kissing in the bathroom so yeah

Work Text:

Another dance was occurring at Nevermore Academy, meaning that Wednesday would have to go through the trouble of finding a "date." Again. Last time was solely for the purpose of solving the secret mystery of Nevermore, but this time? She actually wanted to go, even if it was only a tiny bit. Wednesday tried finding excuses for taking someone to the date, but none of them had any possibility of working out. What makes things worse was that it was a Thursday. Nearly everyone had already found their date, so the probability lowered even further.

What she didn't realize was that her roommate was also going through the same situation. Enid didn’t have a date either. Things between her and Ajax didn't quite work out, so they've stuck with being just friends, though they don’t talk to each other a lot nowadays.

Wednesday was sitting at her desk, typing on her typewriter as always. She didn't have the motivation to practice a new piece on her cello or scare her peers with little effort. She remembered Enid telling her in another one of her oversharing ranting sessions about how she writes down her feelings when she's upset about something. Wednesday pretends she’s too absorbed into her novel, but in reality she tends to remember these things, even the small details.

"Why am I thinking about her right now..." Wednesday mumbled to herself.

There was a knock on the door.

"Come in."

The door opened, with Enid stepping inside. Right, Enid left hours ago, saying how she was hanging out with Yoko. "Ugh Wednesday, you won't believe what I'm about to say. Me... Upcoming dance... No date," Enid complained, but there was no response from Wednesday other than the sounds of her typewriter. She was used to it, but Wednesday seemed more focused than usual on her story.

“Ugh! Why isn’t this working out?!” Wednesday yanked the paper off of the typewriter, throwing it into the trash bin. She slammed her hands onto the desk before beginning to type again.

"Wednesday…?" Enid questioned, concerned. “Is everything okay?"

“You’re going to make fun of me,” Wednesday said.

“I would never.”

Wednesday sighed deeply before sharing her confession. "I am currently incapable of finding someone to accompany me to the dance on Friday," she began, she stopped typing on her typewriter. "And it's Thursday. The dance is tomorrow, meaning I'm out of luck."

"I guess we're in the same situation," Enid giggled. "Wait... why don't we just take each other!" Enid felt positive, as if she created the perfect solution to both girls' problems. Maybe she suggested it because she totally wasn’t crushing on her roommate.

"Not happening." Wednesday stated, folding her arms as she stood up from her chair. "Oh c'mon, it'll spare us both time. It's like killing two birds with one stone. And the good thing is, we're besties! We know each other well enough to not be uncomfortable!"

"You already make me uncomfortable with that ugly sweater," she pointed out Enid's pink sweater. It coincidently looked like a certain flag she saw once.

“Guess you won’t be going to the dance then…”

Wednesday lets out a big sigh, "Fine. Besides, you're the only person I know that can tolerate me better than everyone else."

A big smile formed on Enid’s face out of excitement. “Thank you Wens!” she said, hugging Wednesday. “I know I can always count on my roomie!”

Thing noticed Wednesday accepting the hug and started making teasing gestures. "Shut up, Thing."

Thursday went by swiftly, thankfully for Wednesday. The dance was the only subject of Nevermore students' conversations. Wednesday noticed even the teachers were playing a game of matchmaker, predicting who would go together, what might happen that night, and who would break up. She would be lying if she claimed she wanted the talk to finish already, but Wednesday was too focused on her roommate.

"What dress should I wear?" Enid was holding several dresses in her hands while the rest were lying on her bed. And of course—they had lots of color, mainly pink.

"The real question is, which dress looks less like rainbow vomit."

“I’m going with this one then.” Enid held up a short, pink dress with long sleeves. She began putting the dress over the tank top and shorts she was currently wearing, as she didn’t want her and Wednesday to be awkward from her undressing. Not that Wednesday has seen her undress, of course, and vice versa.

“Come outside when you’re ready,” Enid said. “I’ll be waiting by the school entrance.”

As soon as she left, Thing fidgeted with excitement.

"You look gorgeous," Enid complimented. Wednesday was wearing a black gown similar to her Raven Ball gown, but it had hints of white and long sleeves

"That's not a good thing," Wednesday said. “Or maybe it is.”

"I guess 'You look scary' is the correct saying, then."

Thing crawled up to the two girls, indicating that their ride had arrived. “Thing’s back,” Wednesday noticed. “Let’s get going before we make Xavier impatient.” Enid nodded, examining Wednesday’s face for a moment. She realized that Wednesday had already left, and panickingly ran up and into the car.

“Thank you Xavier for picking us up,” Enid said as she buckled in her seatbelt.

“It’s no problem.”

Wednesday didn’t speak, but rather she nodded her head. Enid noticed this but also didn’t say anything.

“Say Xavier, don’t you have a date accompanying you at the dance too?”

“Maybe, maybe not,” Xavier suggested.

While Wednesday sitting quietly, Enid was on her phone desperate for entertaining content, but had no luck. She decided to put away her phone and take a short nap.

What if Wednesday and I were holding hands right now?

Her thoughts became random at times but this was unexpected. Enid didn’t give it much thought. She grabbed Wednesday’s hand and held it under hers.

“Enid,” Wednesday whispered. “What are you… doing?”

Both girls became flustered, as if the air suddenly got hot.

“Holding your… wait.. what am I doing?” Enid quickly let go of the other’s hand out of embarrassment. If her best friend despised hugs even from her, then what made her think she wouldn’t mind her hand being held?

“I didn’t say I hated it.”

Xavier knew what exactly was going on between the two, but only smirked to himself as he continued to drive.

When Wednesday and Enid stepped out of the car, Yoko had immediately noticed their arrival and started approaching them.

“Yoko!” Enid walked up to Yoko and embraced her into a hug.

“Enid! I’m so glad you were able to make it,” Yoko began. “And it looks like you’ve found a date.”

Enid gained a slight blush on her cheeks from Yoko’s comment, but the same couldn’t have been said for Wednesday.

“Let’s go inside,” Wednesday said as she grabbed Enid’s hand and walked through the doors.

–––

The dance had some differences from the last, having a purple theme instead of blue, but the amount of the people who attended was the same. Wednesday and Enid saw many of their friends and classmates, and their dates. Eventually, things got boring for the both of them.

Out of boredom, Enid inspected her surroundings. She then felt Principal Weem’s gaze on her and Wednesday, but when she turned around, the Principal quickly went back to talking to Bianca. She wasn’t sure if Wednesday noticed this either, but it was strange.

"Wanna ditch this place and go somewhere more private?" Enid whispered in Wednesday’s ear.

"I don't know what you're planning, but sure. I can't stand everyone's presence here."

Grabbing her hand, Enid sneaked her and Wednesday out of the ballroom and into the hallway. She saw Ajax sitting against the wall, making her shocked.

“What is he doing here?” She whispered, trying to lower her chances of both girls being noticed.

“Enid, look closer. He’s knocked out. You can even hear him murmuring in his sleep.” Wednesday walked to where Ajax was sleeping and pointed out his closed eyelids and slightly opened mouth. Enid stood there, not realizing what Wednesday was planning to do to Ajax.

“Wait Wens!” She ran up to the other girl and Ajax. “Maybe don’t conduct another one of your weird experiments him…?”

“You had me waiting for too long.”

“Right,” Enid remembered. “Let’s just leave him alone and continue.” She grabbed Wednesday’s hand and walked until she saw the women’s restroom. Wednesday wanted to question what Enid was planning on doing to… with her but decided to keep quiet.

“Please say I wasn’t hallucinating or anything, but I swear Principal Weems was staring at us for a little too long,” Enid confessed. While that was true, there was someone else that she purposely did not mention. Tyler. She admits that she is being a little overprotective and jealous in this situation, but she noticed the way Tyler was looking at Wednesday.

“That’s what I meant when I said I couldn’t stand others’ presence,” Wednesday replied. “I also noticed Tyler looking at me. I only talk to him when visiting the coffee shop he works at in the mornings.”

Wednesday had the feeling that whatever she did tonight, she’d risk having to sit in the Principal’s office again talking to her, her mother, and possibly Ms. Thornhill and Dr. Kinbott. Two people she especially didn’t get along with.

Wednesday and Enid were now in a corner, staring into each other's eyes. It should’ve been awkward, which it was in a way, but they were both too focused on each other’s features. Wednesday could’ve sworn Enid was staring hard at her lips. She was wearing black lipstick, after all.

“Wednesday? Do you mind if I try something on you?”

“Go ahead.”

Enid’s hands were held on the sides of Wednesday’s waist, pinning her against the bathroom walls. She felt Enid’s place her soft lips onto hers. “So this is what she meant by ‘something,’” Wednesday thought.

It was Wednesday’s first kiss, but not Enid’s… but this was different. Enid's feelings felt different from her first kiss with her own roommate, compared to the numerous times she made out with Ajax. Her claws would always appear suddenly during those make out sessions, which she didn’t understand back then.

They both pulled back from each other, trying to catch their breaths. Their eyes were still locked on one another, not saying or making a sound for a while. As Wednesday took a deep breath, she heard something.

Laughter.

Enid was laughing. Wednesday was going to question her until realization hit her.

She had kissed someone.

…And that someone was Enid.

"I should be mad at you right now," Wednesday admitted. "But I'm not." It was the truth, though. If anyone else had kissed her, then she would've made sure they were haunted for eternity. Enid, however, made her feel fuzzy inside. Her heart would beat even faster when Enid did something slightly intimate, even when it was just passed on as “roommate” or “bestie” behavior.

Enid was about to respond, but was pulled back in for another kiss. Wednesday had more courage this time, as her hands tried getting a better grip on Enid’s clothes. The two of them were enjoying the kiss, although it was cut short.

"Looks like someone's touch-starved,” Enid teased.

"I am not touch starved."

Enid obviously didn't believe her.

"Okay, maybe I am. But that's just an Addams family tradition. Look at my parents." Wednesday was hit by flashbacks of her parents being overly romantic in front of her. Her facial expression changed into slight disgust.

“So… are we more than best friends?”

“Best friends don’t passionately kiss each other.” Wednesday said. “Couples do, though, making us a couple.”

Enid smiled at the couples part and started blushing.

“We’ve stayed here long enough. Let’s get out of here before somebody notices.”

They both left the bathroom, holding hands.

Little did they know Yoko was eavesdropping on them the entire time.

–––

“How did the dance go?” Yoko asked, adjusting the position of her sunglasses.

“It went great! Mine and Wednesday’s relationship had even improved since Friday night!”

“I’m surprised! I thought you two got bored since at one point I tried looking everywhere for you two. I did see you two leaving late, holding each other’s hands,” Yoko said teasingly. “Did something happen that I don’t know about?”

“S-She was tired… yeah! That’s it!” Enid tried covering it up, failing miserably.

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone that you two were kissing in the bathroom… other than maybe Bianca and Divina.”

“How do you know about that?!” Enid blushed in embarrassment, having flashbacks of the kiss replaying in her mind.

“You two weren’t the only ones who got bored,” Yoko hinted with a smirk on her face. If only Enid knew that Yoko and Divina did a similar thing in the halls.
