Chapter 1: Chapter I

Chapter Text

The forest has always been the shortcut towards home, it’s quite eerie and creepy at night and in any circumstances, I would really avoid using the shortcut, but tonight, with everything that’s been going on, I bravely walked onto the dark and uneven path just so I could get home faster. Today has been a tiring day, with work stressing me as usual added by friends who wanted to hangout and unwind as they say, only so they could complain about their lives too.

It’s too tiring. Everything is.

Some say that forests are like a sanctuary, a place where you could fully connect to nature, a place that can instantly calm you and although I agree with that, it’s different at night. Looking around, with nothing to see but darkness gives me anything but that. How are twigs snapping here and there, owls hooting, crows cawing, flapping their wings here and there supposed to calm you down? It’s only scaring me. I should’ve taken the long way home.

My body stiffened and I stopped breathing momentarily as I heard someone whistling to my right. I hurriedly turned off my flashlight and slowly looked the direction the sound came. It’s even darker now that my phone is off, huge trees covering the moon, not letting even a tiny light in. I couldn’t see who it was, but I can tell they’re also heading the same direction, just by listening to his footsteps.

I almost felt relieved, but then I thought, what if they’re a criminal? A fugitive? And worse, a murderer even? With scary thoughts spiralling in my head, I didn’t move an inch, I waited for them to walk ahead until I can no longer hear them before I started sprinting, straying away from the path as I run in panicked. I only realized my mistake after I stopped to catch my breath.

I heard the whistling again, and this time it’s echoing. I look up ahead and in between four trees, stands an old well. That’s odd. Has it always been here? Why? For how long? I slowly step towards it and notice a guy sitting there, his back on me.

“I’m going to curse that guy.” The stranger muttered to himself, before jumping in.

My eyes widen in shock, and without thinking it through, I run up to the well and jump in. As soon as I was under water, I opened my eyes and looked around, but I couldn’t see anyone floating. When my lungs started aching, I tried swimming back up, but I couldn’t. Panic starts kicking in again and I started flailing around, stupidly opening my mouth to cry for help even though I know no one’s going to help me.

I really am so stupid. Instead of calling for him, I followed the guy down the well which is nowhere to be seen by the way, and even if I did see him, how the hell am I supposed to get us out of this damn well? I really need to start using me brain smartly, because look at me now, I’m going to die in this abandoned well, its existence already forgotten.

Is this really the end? Is this how I’m going to die?

I wish I could have lived my life more.

I wanted to die with no regrets, but I guess that’s impossible.

I released the last ounce of breath I have as my consciousness slowly fades.

I couldn’t even say goodbye to everyone.
