    V1 had made a massive mistake. Leaving itself open to an attack by an unseen and unknown entity, one that had trudged its way down through the layers just to delete the Machine.

    But somehow, V1 survived, if just barely. The attack sent them Somewhere Else, it wasn't hell, and with their very essence gone from their body, the only thing left to do was to take the deal offered by a voice that promised the chance to protect their parent species.

    Too bad that there was nothing that could be done about V1 themselves, as their essence had to be replaced by another, and this one happens to know a lot about what's going on.
