Work Text:
Amity Blight had always known what was expected of her. She was of the Blight family, one of the most powerful and influential families in the Boiling Isles, and she was an alpha, destined for greatness. That was what her mother, Odalia, had told her, had practically drilled into her brain until she understood it. She was not to associate with people below her, like that beta she had been friends with as a child, Willow Park.
…she really missed Willow, though.
Willow had been her best friend, and they had thought it would always be that way. Sure, Willow was a late bloomer regarding magic, but that wasn’t a problem, right? They could still be friends.
But Odalia told Amity no, and Alador had agreed with his wife, so Amity broke things off with Willow, despite how much it hurt her heart to do so.
It was only later, once she began recognizing what it was like to have romantic feelings, that she realized that Willow had been her first crush, and maybe she still harbored a little one, her heart threatening to leap out of her chest whenever she saw her in the halls of the school. But nevermind that, she wasn’t allowed to interact with Willow anyway. At least not in a positive manner.
(A part of her felt guilty for bullying Willow for all those years, but she pushed it away. She couldn’t be weak. She was a Blight.)
Luz Noceda changed things.
The moment Amity got to know her as a person and not just that one weird human omega who pretended to be Willow’s abomination, she began to fall for her. Already well-versed in the arts of knowing about romance, Amity was at least able to tell what her feelings were this time, but…
I shouldn’t feel this way.
Yet Luz’s scent made her heart beat faster whenever she smelled it, even if it was just on the Azura book the omega had lended her. Seeing Luz was even worse: Amity felt her face flare up, and quickly stammered and tried to get away as fast as possible.
I never felt this way toward Willow, Amity thought. But I was a child back then, and…
I’m older now. And I’m in love with Luz.
Oh no. Ohhhh nooooo. This is a disaster. A catastrophe, even.
How do I STOP this?
Unfortunately, Amity could not figure out a way to stop herself from loving Luz.
Sometimes, Amity got her hopes up and thought that maybe, just maybe, Luz loved her back. But then Willow would arrive and Amity would realize that no, her love was hopeless.
Luz was clearly in love with Willow.
The person Amity was in love with, and her first crush, in love with each other.
This felt like a sick joke.
Well, she thought, it’s not like I’m even allowed to be with them anyway…
Amity was shocked when the two of them asked her out.
“We like you,” Luz said, “and we think you like us. So, if you want to…” she smiled awkwardly in the adorable way that Amity found herself loving.
“Yes,” Amity blurted out. “Yes, yes- I want to-” Her face turned red. “Oh no. I don’t know what to say.”
Willow chuckled. “Just say you want to date us.”
“I want to date you guys,” Amity whispered, and there was nothing truer than that.
After she was already together with the two of them, Amity found out that her crush on Willow was turning into love. She didn’t mind, as long as her parents - especially Odalia - didn’t find out. Now, that? That would be a disaster.
Of course, Odalia found out.
That was why Amity found herself at the door of the Owl House at midnight, about to knock but continuously hesitating, until finally Hooty screamed “I CAN’T DEAL WITH THIS ANYMORE!” and brought Luz down for her.
“Amity?” Luz whispered, and Amity collapsed into her arms, tears soaking into her girlfriend’s shirt.
“I don’t want to go home, not right now,” Amity whispered. She didn’t know how she could ever go home, after what had happened. Odalia had been mad, and they had both shouted, and then Amity was running…
“I understand,” Luz whispered, and Amity let out a choked sob, because she knew Luz was telling the truth.
She understood.
Luz brought her in and sat her down on the couch before calling Willow over. It didn’t take long for Amity’s other girlfriend to arrive, riding on her staff. Amity felt grateful that Willow was a beta and couldn’t smell all of Amity’s panicked scents like Luz could. She knew how Willow would react, and she didn’t want anything to happen to her.
Amity told them about the fight with Odalia, and they listened. At some point, Amity thought she saw either Eda or King moving about upstairs, but whoever it was, they didn’t come down. Luz told her she was free to stay at the Owl House for however long she needed, and Amity smiled.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
“My place is available too,” Willow offered, and Amity thanked her as well.
Finally, Amity collapsed on the couch. Catching a whiff of Luz’s scent on the pillow that she had provided, Amity smiled a little bit.
“My parents would never approve of you, but I don’t care,” Amity whispered.
Why am I using past tense? Amity wondered, then realized that it was because she hoped that maybe, one day…
Definitely not Odalia, but Alador could. Alador could approve of them, accept them…
One day.
“You guys are my treasures,” she whispered, and she had a brief second to see the small smiles on her girlfriends’ faces before she fell asleep from exhaustion.
Amity didn’t return home the next day, or the day after, or even after that. She didn’t want to go home. Not right now.
Her older siblings, Edric and Emira, had been worried when they awoke to see Amity missing, and Amity smiled a little as she read their frantic messages. She responded, telling them where she was and that she was okay, and they were over in minutes.
She didn’t have to go home yet. She couldn’t stay here forever though, she knew.
But right now… she didn’t need Odalia.
