A Game of Cat-and-Chick

Summary:

Coop life, what’s not to love? There’s grains aplenty, naps all day everyday. Mimi didn’t know he was missing something.

That is until he met a wild beast that showed him what it means to truly live.

He still loves grains though.

Work Text:

Warm. That’s all Mimi’s brain can supply at the moment.

The hay smells fresh, his brothers and sisters are waddling around, trying to fly time and time again (they fail miserably each time) and all in all, Mimi can say that life is good these days.

He wakes up each morning at dawn when his dad announces the new day, starting his daily routine by eating the seeds the humans living next door throw his way. When his belly is full and he feels satisfied, he drinks water and sprays a few droplets on his wings to freshen up a bit. Then, and that’s the best part, he cuddles with his siblings and takes a nap.

If he feels a little adventurous that day, he’ll explore his surroundings a bit and exit the coop. His favorite spot to nap in the afternoons is under the big oak tree next to their coop, close to the pig’s enclosure, where he can just fluff up and enjoy the day’s warmth without burning under the harsh sun.

Today is one of those days. It’s warm. Too warm.

So he straightens up and waddles on both feet towards the big tree. He chirps here and there, exchanges a few words with his siblings and assures his mom he’ll come back soon, that he’s not going far and that yes, yes , he’ll come back before dinner.

It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy chirping around with his siblings. It’s just that he sometimes prefers watching them from afar while he just lays there and does nothing. And chirping around takes a lot of energy. Especially in the summer.

When he gets to the bottom of the tree he discards a few branches laying on his spot and makes up a semblance of a nest with nearby leaves. He then does a few circles in place before promptly plopping down and fluffing his yellow feathers.

And he watches the other chicks for a while, with nothing but fondness in his heart. He doesn’t even realize he’s dozing off until he’s startled by a sound he doesn’t recognize, right behind him. His eyes snap open.

The pigs are snorting as usual, in their enclosure. He counts his siblings one by one until he’s up to twelve. They’re all there. His mom and dad are there too, next to the coop. Which leaves him with two options.

One, the humans. And he’s not fond of that idea because he’s not supposed to be outside right now. Though he knows they would understand.

But the second option is well, even more unnerving. Because it would mean he doesn’t know what’s behind him.

Maybe if he just closes his eyes and—

Crack.

A twig snaps behind him, Mimi hears it clearly.

His little heart beats too quickly for a chickie’s heart, and his little feet almost feel like they’re sweating. He slowly blinks and swivels his head around, closing his eyes progressively as he does so.

Why?

If he doesn’t see it, it doesn’t exist.

Except it does exist. And it’s a huge beast with eyes as sharp as the rock close to the horse’s stables. Mimi almost cut his foot on it once. Never again.

The beast eyes him with what looks like curiosity and Mimi really isn’t sure what’s the best course of action in this situation. Should he run as far as his feet let him? Should he drop to the ground and stop moving entirely? Or should he do.. nothing?

He opts for the second option because of my god what is this and he really wants to be able to eat the good, good seeds tonight.

Dropping to the ground and acting lifeless is harder than he had thought. His little right foot twitches once or twice and he lets out an accidental chirp as he does so. But he eventually manages to stay still, heartbeat going haywire as he hears footsteps inching closer and closer.

And, fair enough, Mimi doesn’t know a lot about life outside of his coop. But he still doesn’t expect the ticklish feeling he gets when the creature.. sniffs him? And not only that but the feeling he gets when the beast squishes its wet nose in his face is something he’s never felt before.

It kinda feels like when his mom kisses him goodnight, paired with the feeling he gets when he wakes up in the warmth of the late afternoon sun. He feels.. content? What a weird feeling . Especially since all his senses scream for him to escape because this beast seems dangerous .

Instead, he lays still on the ground and the creature seems to get more and more agitated as time goes by. It starts nuzzling hard enough at his face for Jimin to start rolling on his side and oh my god what’s going on.

It’s not until the beast lays a frighteningly big paw on Mimi’s fluffy body that the latter chirps in fright and bounces up in one swift movement. They stare at each other for a long moment, both too afraid to make a movement. Or at least Mimi is afraid.

The beast’s eyes are wide and seem to scour over every inch of Jimin’s body in search of.. something? Maybe a weak spot?

But just as Mimi’s about to run as fast as he can towards his coop, akin to a frantic headless chicken, he hears a startling noise. It’s not frightening or anxiety inducing. No. It’s.. almost like a purr?

It is a purr.

The beast is purring. Just like the cat that lives with the habitants of the house next to Mimi’s coop.

Is the beast a cat?

Without meaning to, Mimi’s tiny feet bring him closer to the strange creature. And the creature simply watches him, lowers its head a bit to better look at him, perhaps.

Against all instincts, Mimi looks up into the creature’s big eyes and tilts his head to the side, his way of asking it what exactly it is doing here. What does it want from him?

The creature’s response to his question is to literally shove its face into Mimi’s and rub its nose in the crook of his neck.

Mimi freezes instantly. Though he soon melts into a pathetic puddle of happy chirps and floof. The.. cat(?) is gentle and warm, soft and so fluffy. Fluffier than Mimi’s siblings. Definitely fluffier than his mom.

So he lets the creature rub against him for a while, even leans onto its large body for support. And that’s how he finds himself in the cat’s warm, warm embrace, literally a nest of fluffy hair all around him as he sleeps against it. He doesn’t know why he suddenly started trusting creatures he’s never met or seen before, but there’s no way this is wrong.

Because the cat is purring in content, eyes closed and back leaning against the rough bark of the oak tree. And Mimi feels so happy. So protected and precious.

And when dinner time comes, he reluctantly jumps off the cat’s embrace and motions towards his coop, to let him know he has to go.

The cat blinks once, twice, and rubs its nose against Mimi’s beak. They nuzzle at each other for a few seconds before Mimi bounces towards his coop and siblings, hunger growling in his belly and happiness floating around his brain like a hazy golden fog.

Mimi doesn’t expect to see the cat again but is very happy to notice it waiting for him in the shade of the oak tree the next day, with what seems to be a smile on its adorable face.

They cuddle again, all day long, having conversations of their own, nevermind that they can’t communicate in the same language. And it goes on like this for days and weeks. Until one day, Mimi waits under the oak tree for hours, in vain. That night he’s so troubled by the cat’s disappearance that he switches back to his human form and cries under the oak tree while his family sleeps in the coop.

He doesn’t sleep, he simply cannot . Not when his cat didn’t show up. Had it forgotten about him? Gotten bored maybe? Or perhaps it had gotten tired of not being able to communicate properly. But Mimi loves him. He’s gotten used to the cat’s presence. And life without him seems too bland for his liking.

How had he survived all this time without him?

It’s while hot tears roll down his cheek, under the pale moonlight, that Mimi sees him again. His cat, coming out of the tree line. Its shadow stretches across the grass like it wants to reach and caress Mimi’s soul.

The latter eyes widen and he waits for the cat to come closer, sitting under the tree on their spot. The cat seems confused, even a little scared. But it doesn’t last long. Because then Mimi speaks and all is well in the world again.

“Kitty..” He hiccups, a small sound that must seem a bit pathetic to the creature’s ears.

The cat immediately butts its head against Mimi’s thigh, repeats the motion again and again while Mimi caresses the soft fur on its back. And there always seemed to be something unique about Mimi’s cat. He had never been able to figure out what exactly but its eyes always seemed to hold so much wisdom. The answer to all of Mimi’s troubles. Albeit Mimi’s troubles aren’t very complicated, but still.

He’d like to know how to roll the rock in his coop away without having to switch back to his human form. Or better yet, he’d love it if the cat could tell him how to eat as much grains as he wants without feeling bloated. Alas, the cat is a cat.

Or he thought.

In the blink of an eye, the soft creature in front of him shifts into human form, the most beautiful human Mimi has ever been blessed enough to see. All bright blonde hair, fluffy cat ears atop of it and gorgeous brown eyes, very similar to the cat’s eyes. And that’s without mentioning the magnificent tail peeking out from behind the hybrid’s back.

“Y-you.. You’re a—“

“Hi”

The hybrid’s voice is deep . So much deeper than Mimi could have ever expected. And it has so much texture, such a gravelly quality to it. Mimi would like to roll around in it if he could.

“I didn’t know you’re a hybrid too..”

A chuckle, “I didn’t know you’re one too” The cat hybrid scratches his ears awkwardly. He’s impossibly more endearing in this form, it’s truly baffling to Mimi. His brain can barely register all that’s happening. “I’m Yoongi”

Yoongi. Beautiful.

But as much as Mimi feels like he’s floating above the clouds right this moment, he also feels anger prickling under his skin, begging to be let out, if only a little.

So he pouts petulantly, “And I’m mad. You weren’t here today”

The other man at least has the decency to look a little guilty. He shuffles closer and gently takes a hold of Mimi’s hand with his own while he dries the still wet tear tracks on Mimi’s puffy cheeks with his other hand. “Don’t cry..”

Mimi isn’t used to the feeling taking a hold of him, his cheeks burning hot under the other’s touch. But it’s not bad just.. different. He likes it.

“You weren’t here..” He repeats, lips wobbling if only a little.

“I’m sorry,” The cat hybrid caresses Mimi’s blonde head of hair. “I was just.. working on something all day. Do you want to see? It’s nothing much but..”

Mimi’s eyes widen and he nods enthusiastically, his earlier tantrum now completely forgotten. Yoongi guides them towards the edge of the forest. And it’s only when they’ve stepped under the trees that Mimi registers what’s in front of him.

A tiny basket, just big enough for Mimi to snuggle into while he’s in his chick form. There’s a bunch of soft looking leaves at the bottom and even a few flowers weaved here and there. It looks so comfortable. And Mimi doesn’t know what to do with his heart because it seems like it just wants to leap out and run on its own.

“Is this..”

“For you” Yoongi replies to his question before he even utters it. “It’s not much but.. I thought you’d be comfy and maybe.. think of me..”

A loud hiccup leaves Mimi’s throat and he leaps into the other’s arms, burying his face into the crook of his neck. He smells exactly like he does in cat form. The scent is truly heavenly. It smells of peace and happiness.

Mimi’s happiness.

“I’m— My name’s Mimi,” He whispers, looking into Yoongi’s eyes.

Yoongi smiles brightly and holds him tight, even goes as far as laying a kiss on Mimi’s forehead. The latter almost chirps, in human form and all.

“Mimi.. it fits you. It’s as cute as you are.” The cat hybrid boops Mimi’s nose.

They walk back towards the oak tree and sit under it, Mimi’s back pressed against Yoongi’s chest while the latter wraps his arms around Mimi and kisses his temple.

The chick hybrid can only giggle sheepishly and press his forehead on the other man’s. “Don’t miss our daily cuddle sessions again without telling me, ok? I was scared.”

Yoongi rubs the tip of his nose against Mimi’s, “Why were you scared?”

A slight frown marrs Jimin’s features as he replies,

“Because.. what if you got bored of me or, or.. what if something happened to you? Life isn’t the same without you..” He pouts again, this time deeper than he ever has.

“I could never get bored of you, chickie.”

Mimi giggles and Yoongi takes advantage of the moment to pepper his face with a thousand kisses, from his eyelids all the way down to his chin. He only avoids one spot, much to Mimi’s dismay.

But he must immediately notice Mimi’s saddened expression because then he dips down again and lays the most gentle kiss on Mimi’s lips, barely a kiss but still one. The best of all. The softest of lips. Mimi will never get tired of this.

“Will you stay tonight?” The chick hybrid inquires, closing his eyes as he does so.

“Mmhm, if you want me to. Won’t your family wonder where you are?”

“I’ll slip back in early.”

Yoongi simply nods and presses his lips on the crown of Mimi’s head.

Mimi can barely manage to whisper in his drowsy state but he still does, a small, “Sleep well kitty”

And Yoongi replies just the same, his tail caressing Mimi’s skin as it twitches in happiness.

“Sleep well chickie..”
