Chapter 1: Carrot Cake and Kooky Messages

Chapter Text

The room slowly comes into focus in what seems like an eternity as the sounds of traffic stir her out of her sleep. She groans sitting up realizing she must’ve fell asleep on the cold floor once again. The room is a mess, scattered news papers, empty snack wrappers, take out containers, alcohol bottles, soda cans cover the floor.

Her body feels like its being weighed down by 100 lb weights as she struggles to stand up, despite the searing pain in her head.

A phone buzzes from her back pocket and she quickly realizes that it’s nearly noon, and she was supposed to start work nearly 2 hours ago.

“Shit.” She curses seeing a ton of missed calls and text messages.

She runs a hand through her curly mane and grabs a notebook immediately dialing the number that was hurriedly scribbled on a coffee stained notebook.

“Hi Mrs. Adler I'm so sorry I missed our meeting I got caught in traffic and then my tire-uh blew out.” She said clutching her head again.

“Oh I knew something important must’ve happened, My husband said you stood us up like all the rest of them.” She said relieved.

“Oh no of course not, can we meet later this night?” She asks.

“Of course dear, I'll make dinner and I'll tell you everything I know.” She agrees.

“Thank you Mrs. Adler, what’s your address?” She asks quickly looking around for a pen to jot it down coming up with nothing she quickly grabs a ketchup packet opens it contents and begins writing in ketchup the address on the notebook.

“You got that dear?” Mrs. Adler asks finishing giving the address.

“Yup, thanks, see you later.” She says sighing after hanging up.

She slowly walks to the fridge and opens it finding only a bottle of water and a questionable pack of yogurt.

She takes the water and begins chugging its contents as she tries to recall what exactly happened last night but nothing was coming.

A knocking sound suddenly echoed throughout the tiny apartment and she groaned not in the mood to deal with any of her crazy neighbors.

She just hoped no one needed to borrow her plunger this time.

“Look assholes, your not using my plunger to stick to your hairy nipples.” She barked while opening the door.

“Good Thing I didn’t plan on it.” A familiar voice said catching her completely off guard.

“Tyler.” She said stunned.

“Kirah.” He replied back.

“How the hell did you find my apartment?”

“I traced your phone after you called me 5 times cussing me out.” He said.

“I called you?”

“Yeah you sounded wasted so I came looking for you, and from what I can see, I'm glad I did.” He said peering past her into her apartment that looked more like a wasteland.

She slightly closes the door behind her and stands with her arms folded, “Your not invited in.”

“Kirah, what the hell is going on with you, you haven’t been answering any of my calls.” He said angrily.

“I obviously don’t wanna talk to you.” She snapped back.

“Oh so that’s why you called me 5 times last night.” He said crossing his arms as well.

“Shouldn’t you be somewhere baking cakes in the woods?” She jeered.

“Shouldn’t you be at work?” He retorted.

“I’m an independent private investigator, I work on my own time.” She justified.

“Uh huh, that’s why women are still going missing around here.” He harshly said.

“God your an asshole.” Kirah huffed but a pang of guilt hit her knowing he was right.

“I’ve been called worse, now let me in.” He said.

Kirah stared him down, “Does Wednesday know your here?”

“I was actually about to come over anyway, She’s the one who told me to come by and give you a message, something about her having a lead?” Tyler frowns.

“God she must be desperate if she told you to come by, fine, what do you got for me?” Kirah sighs turning around and opening the door to allow him in.

He enters as she closes the door and ushers him to sit down on the couch, the only spot that wasn’t completely littered with trash and clothes.

“Kirah i’m very concerned.”

“Well don’t be.”

“I’m still your dad you know.”

“Signing your name on a piece of paper doesn’t automatically make you my father, especially since you signed another piece of paper divorcing my mom.” She spat back.

Tyler sighs, “It’s been 5 years Kirah.”

“You left Wednesday and me to go play Betty Crocker in the woods, I think I have every right to be pissed at you.” She dryly laughed.

“If your asking about my bakery it’s doing fine, and Wednesday told me to leave.” He reminded.

Kirah sighs rubbing her tired eyes, “I’m done having this conversation, the message Tyler?”

“It’s not much, just a note.” He says reaching in his pocket and handing it over to her.

She takes it and immediately opens it confused at exactly what she was seeing.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” She says looking as Tyler in confusion.

“Yeah I thought she was offering me menu ideas when I saw it, but she seemed serious.” He said.

“A blueberry muffin?” Kirah almost laughs if she wasn’t completely puzzled.

“I’m just as lost as you are, does this have something to do with the missing girls around here?”

“Mom’s visions are usually violent, I don’t understand how a blueberry muffin is dangerous? I mean unless the high sugar contents kill you.” Kirah scoffed.

“Which reminds me, here I brought something for you to try, you haven’t had breakfast yet have you?” He asked taking out of the messenger bag he came with.

“No.” She said honestly.

“Good, try this.” He opened the bag and took out a plate wrapped in saran wrap.

He unwrapped it and there layed a slice of carrot cake that honestly looked absolutely delicious.

“Carrot cake?” Kirah said taking the fork that he had handed her.

“Yup, I'm thinking of putting it on the menu, it’s not your ordinary carrot cake though.” He said smirking.

She sighed reluctantly taking a bite and absolutely hated with everything in her that it was actually delicious.

“I hate you.” She frowned putting the plate down.

Tyler smiled, “You loved it.”

“Pineapple?”

“Pineapple.”

Kirah rolls her eyes refusing to take another bite or even acknowledge the cakes presence.

“So that’s definitely going on the menu, come by for a slice?” He asked giving her one of those haughty self entitled smirks that she absolutely hated, it was times like these where she was reminded that her dad was and still is a vindictive monster when he wanted to be.

“Pineapple isn’t going to make me like you again.” She protested.

“We’ll see..I'm also thinking about adding Chocolate Cherry Walnut cookies to the menu as well.”

“Get out.” She quickly said.

He laughs at his daughter serious expression as he closes his messenger bag and stands up.

“Actually I'm exhausted from the train ride here, I figured I'd just stay here, maybe I can help you clean up?” He said.

“Absolutely not, I only have a one bedroom.”

“I’ll take the couch.” He said.

“Tyler-”

“Kirah.” He droned back.

“I don’t need your supervision, I’m not gonna get drunk and fall into a revene.” Kirah stressed.

“Good I suck at swimming.” He said.

Kirah groans, “Fine stay, but i want you out by tomorrow night, I’m gonna be gone most of today anyway.”

“The Casanova Kidnapper case?”

“Someone is kidnapping girls, marrying them, draining their bank accounts, releasing them, and then leaving them financially unstable and heartbroken and I wanna know why.”

“Sounds like what your mother did to me.” Tyler quipped.

Kirah gets up and quickly hands him the broom that was burried under a pile of clothes, “Get to cleaning.” She huffed walking into her bedroom and slamming the door behind her.

She groaned looking at the picture once again that her mother had sent her, she had no idea what this meant but she was definitely going to find out.
