Chapter Text
What is it with that human girl? Power thought as she and Kobeni walked back to their homes after an evening of devil hunting. They had been paired together by the unknowable hand of Miss Makima, and Power had no idea how to talk to her. Why does she even work as a devil hunter?. Power stared at the timid girl walking next to her. Kobeni kept uncomfortably glancing at Power until she got up the courage to ask:
“Did you want to talk to me about something, Power?” Her voice was small and shaky but Power replied right away.
“Yes! I, Power, conqueror of galaxies, would like to know why you even work this job! You seem so freaked out when you’re devil hunting, like why don't you just work at Burger King or something?”
Kobeni was caught off-guard by Power’s interest in her. She assumed Power could care less about the personal details in the lives of humans.
“I-I only work here because my parents said it was either this or become a prostitute. I… didn’t want to do the latter”, said Kobeni.
Power took in this information.
“Wow! They sound like dicks!” replied Power, without a shred of hesitation.
Kobeni was taken aback again. Power seemed almost empathetic, in her own insensitive way.
“Oh no, I mean yeah they can be sometimes but they’re my family so, well, you know?” said Kobeni, tripping over her words.
“Ok. I never had a family ‘cause I’m from hell! Ha!” exclaimed Power, smiling at Kobeni, who couldn’t tell if she was trying to brag or not.
“Oh… I’m sorry, Power.” said Kobeni, who was flustered and confused and didn’t really know how to respond to this. Power looked at Kobeni for a beat.
“Tisn’t an issue! I have Denji and Topknot to keep me company! And Meowy, of course!” said Power, her pointy teeth beaming at Kobeni.
“That’s nice.” said Kobeni, not sure what else to say to Power. She was surprised she got to talk to her at all really. I mean, what would Power want from her, other than some cheap laughs at her expense. They walked in silence for a bit. Kobeni tried to ignore Power staring at her, but it was becoming more and more difficult. Kobeni decided to risk starting another conversation.
“It’s kinda pretty out. I mean with the sunset over the buildings, and everything” Kobeni said, trying to push down the awkwardness and self hatred that came with small talk.
“Indeed! ‘Tis quite the pleasant stroll we’re having!” proclaimed Power in her weird, faux-high society talk. The two walked on a bit. There was an odd sort of comfort that grew between them as they walked, and looking at the sky fade from soft orange to violet calmed Kobeni’s nerves a bit. That is, until Power decided to speak up.
“You make me feel weird, human! Explain!” Power accused, dramatically pointing her finger at Kobeni and putting a hand on her hip. Kobeni paused for a moment as the possible implications of the question sank in, then she felt her face going red.
“Uh- in what way do I make you- uh- feel weird, Power?”, Kobeni said, shaking a little. Power's eyebrows drew together and she brought a hand to her chin as she mulled it over. Kobeni wasn’t quite ready to admit to herself how cute she found this. She needed a bit more time to process what the hell was happening.
“When I’m around you I feel all nervous! And weird! And my face gets hot! Have you been poisoning me in my sleep, human?” Power said, very loudly. Kobeni’s mind was in the stratosphere at this point. She could feel her hands shaking in her pockets and she felt jittery and anxious, like she just drank 5 cups of coffee instead of her usual 3. Before she could formulate any sort of explanation for Power’s feelings she internally heaved a sigh of relief as she saw Power’s apartment building on the street up ahead. She still had to say something though, or Power might think she had actually poisoned her, for whatever reason.
“I- uh- promise I didn’t poison you, Power. Uh, I don’t really know why you feel like that- mm- around me. I swear I wouldn’t try to hurt you- I mean unless you tried to hurt me I guess”, Kobeni rambled. Power fixed her with another cat-like stare. Kobeni met her eyes and glanced away quickly, becoming even more flustered.
“Ok! I believe you, small human”, Power said, smiling. She looked up.
“Oh! ‘Tis my stop! Goodnight, sweet Kobeni! Until the morrow!”, Power said, smiling and waving as she walked up the steps into her building.
“Goodnight, Power”, Kobeni whispered, nervously waving back. She then walked home, her mind completely blank.
Hours later Kobeni lay in her bed, her hands gripping the blanket pulled up to her nose. Sweet Kobeni? There was no way Power actually had feelings for her. Her? Why would someone as pretty and confident and- powerful as Power care about someone like her? She was being stupid, obviously, for thinking about it so much. But she couldn’t help it. What if Power really did have feelings for her? Would she reciprocate? What would dating a blood fiend even be like? What if Power was her first kiss? Would she like that? She might…
Jesus christ, what the hell is she thinking? There’s no proof at all that Power likes her. She’d probably be a shitty girlfriend anyway. No confidence. But even though it would’ve seemed insane to her before, Kobeni was honestly considering what it might be like to be in a relationship with Power. To be held by her. To go on dates and get ice cream. To kiss her…Kobeni drifted off to sleep, letting her imagination get the better of her.
