Work Text:
It had been about a month since his first letter from Ajax. He had expected this much. The Harbinger was probably rather busy with work. Diluc considered writing him a letter first, but he was unsure of whether or not Ajax would actually receive the letter at all. Instead he just decided to wait and try to push his anxiety that something could be wrong to the side. He had other things to focus on anyway. He needed to make sure he was staying on top of his work.
Then, just as he starting to lose his focus for what felt like the hundredth time that week while he was trying to get through more paperwork, there’s a knock on his office door. “Come in.” He called, still looking over the chart of sales that he’d been looking over for the last 15 minutes at least.
“Sir, I have a letter for you.” It was Mocco. He turned to see her standing in the doorway timidly, holding a light blue envelope. The first letter had also come in a light blue envelope. Immediately, Diluc was on his feet and walking over to her, fighting back a smile. He carefully took the letter from Mocco and thanked her. She dipped her head to him and left right after that. He shut the door and returned to his desk, settling down in his chair.
He opened the letter and started reading, and he couldn’t fight the smile that slowly grew bigger as he continued reading.

Diluc,
I’m so sorry for not sending another letter sooner. Work got a bit hectic and now I’m in Fontaine. I think you’d like it here. I’ll bring you to see it when I can. What do you think?
I have to take care of some business here, so I may not be able to send another letter for a time, but after this letter, you should be expecting a package (that will have another letter in it) with some gifts. There’s a set of clothes I found that I think you would look nice in. And there’s a few desserts from here. You seem to have a sweet tooth, considering how you devoured that ponchiki I made for you.
I hope you’re doing well. Remember to rest, Diluc. I don’t like sleeping without you, either, but you have to make sure to get at least some sleep. I’m always thinking about you. And yes, you don’t have to remind me, I’m staying safe. I’ll be careful, I promise. Please try not to worry too much. Wouldn’t want that beautiful red hair of yours to go gray too soon.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to send me a letter this time. I can’t disclose my location. But please stay safe for me, Diluc. Some of those monsters can be really tough. Don’t go getting yourself terribly injured. If I hear you’ve been put on bedrest, I won’t be happy. Be careful.
Love,
Ajax

Diluc was, in all honesty, more than a little disappointed that he couldn’t send a letter back to Ajax. He sighed as he slipped the letter into a box where he’d placed the first letter. He had designated the box to put all of his letters from Ajax in. The box stayed up on one of the higher shelves of his bookshelf in his room. He reread the first letter and sighed again before placing it back in the box carefully before returning the box to its spot on the bookshelf.
Then, he turned and walked over to his desk to continue working on paperwork. He figured he’d finish up whatever he could today. The sun was starting to set and he needed to set out soon. There was a hilichurl camp near Windrise that had been terrorizing some of the civilians that had been trying to go for picnics near the big Windrise tree. He wanted to deal with it as soon as possible.

It was three days later when the package that Ajax had promised him arrived. Sure enough, there was a set of clothes in the box. Diluc changed into it and stood in the full-body mirror in his bathroom for a few minutes, looking himself over. Ajax hadn’t been wrong. The outfit actually did suit Diluc quite well, despite the odd Fontaine style of it. ‘If I ever get the chance to go to Fontaine with him, I’ll wear this. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to wear it aside from then, though.’ He thought. After he had changed into more comfortable clothes again, he looked back in the package to see four different parcels of food. Probably the desserts Ajax had mentioned. Instead of digging into those immediately, despite the fact that he wanted to, he instead opened the letter, eager to see what Ajax had said this time.

Diluc,
I promised I’d send a few desserts, didn’t I? Let me know how you like them when you get the chance to send another letter. Also, let me know what you think of the outfit. Does it suit you as well as I thought it would? I hope so. I’d love to see you in it.
I’m still working on things in Fontaine right now, so you can’t send a letter yet. But I’ll let you know when I get back to a place where I can receive letters again as soon as possible. I promise, and you know I keep my promises.
Stay safe and get some rest, Diluc. I hope you enjoy the desserts I sent you. I made sure to get the recipes, too.
Love,
Ajax

Diluc smiled and set that letter into the box with the other two. He’d write his response soon so that he could send it the second he had the chance. For now, he wanted to look over the recipes for the desserts and enjoy those. Maybe he could make them for his staff sometime. He figured they’d appreciate it.
