“Just one more thing before we start filming my piece, Crowley – would you mind terribly making sure that splendid rainbow is showing in the background of the shot?”
“Oooh, a rain bow. Really, angel? Bit cliché, innit?”
"Hush, you. I know it’s rather obvious. But you can’t deny the power of the symbolism.”
“Eh. Maybe back in the beginning, but it‘s gone all corporate and mainstream these days. Urgh.”
“I beg to differ. The corporations can try all they like but in the end it still belongs to us and always has. Maybe you look at a rainbow and see a cheap cliché, but I see a symbol of hope and resilience. And it isn’t necessarily a bad thing that it’s everywhere these days. We’re no different than everyone else, after all, and it’s past time people acknowledged that openly.”
“Yeah, alright, I guess you’ve got a point there.”
“Have I ever told you about the letter that someone sent to the station a few years ago? They said, and I quote, that I looked ‘gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide.’ I don’t think they meant it in a particularly complimentary way either, as the rest of the letter was about why Channel Six ought to fire me post-haste.”
“They can go rot in Hell.”
“I don’t disagree. But do you know what my first thought was when I read that? Good. I’m glad you noticed. I’m doing something right then. Not for the sake of that letter-writer, mind you, but for the viewers that I actually care about. That was about when I started wearing the rainbow flag pin on air. Nowadays I also try to feature rainbows on my segment whenever I can. You never know when someone might be watching who needs the reminder they’re not alone. I know I for one would have appreciated seeing someone like myself on the telly when I was younger.”
“Me too. Seeing your nice arse on the telly wouldn’t have hurt either.”
“Oh good lord, Crowley.”
“What? ’M only telling the truth. Twitter thinks so too, by the way. Move over to your left a meter or so, yeah? I think I can get most of it in this shot if you do. Thing’s bloody huge.”
“How’s this?”
“Perfect, angel. Perfect.”
[Instagram image description]: a photograph of a rainbow over the ocean. You can tell from the bits of blue sky peeking out from between silver clouds that the storm has passed for the most part, but the waves are still high and somewhat turbulent. The rainbow stretches across most of the sky, going all the way from the horizon to some rocky cliffs just visible at the far left.]
ajcrowley Not my usual style when it comes to storm pics, but someone told me today that you never know when someone might need the reminder that they’re not alone. So here ya go. Love is love.
