Summary
Peter Vincent has driven halfway across the country, limping into Chicago on fumes, to meet his half-brother Anthony Crowley and share the news of their mother's untimely death. Anthony is an artist and part-time sex worker (because even in 1941 art didn't pay the bills) whose rich patron (and possibly the love of his life but let's not get ahead of ourselves) owns and operates the Stevens. Peter hopes that a week or two in a new place, surrounded by luxury and beauty, will help him recover from what he saw in California when his parents died.
Unfortunately, some nightmares are real, and they are everywhere. Especially in a hotel in a major tourist hub, where people come and go so easily and can disappear without a trace.
At least he's not alone this time. Anthony understands what Peter has been through better than he'd expected, and he finds a new connection with Anthony's friend, Miles Maitland. Miles is clever, charming, and much tougher than he looks. He also has Peter feeling and thinking things that he thought he'd buried deep inside.
