Apple White can’t stand Raven Queen, daughter of Hades. All of Raven’s friends insist that Raven is the greatest and so nice, but Apple can’t believe it. She’s the illegitimate child of one of the big three gods! You don’t get to have that amount of power and just be nice.
“You can’t judge a book by its cover!” Cedar Wood says, the ever cheerful daughter of Demeter. “She’s actually really nice.” Apple’s sure that Cedar thinks so, since she’s been cursed to never lie, but Apple can’t believe it.
Until, of course, Apple’s avoiding Raven luck runs out. Giles Grimm, who has an infuriating habit of putting together the worst teams, decides to send Apple on a quest with Raven. At least they’ll have their mutual friend Maddie Hatter, daughter of Dionysus, to act as a buffer.
Except Maddie leaves right after a fight, saying she has to talk to her father or something similar, leaving Apple and Raven together on a dock. They stare at each other, light dimming on the horizon.
“Why do you hate me?” Raven finally says, sitting down at the edge of the dock. “Like, what did I ever do to you? I’ve tried to be nice, and you’re the only person who doesn’t accept that.”
“You’re the daughter of the death god!” Apple snaps, turning her back to Raven, “you’re basically made to be evil.”
Raven scoffs. “You’re the daughter of Aphrodite and I don’t see you only sitting around and being pretty and wooing boys. Maybe I’m not evil. Plus, my dad isn’t evil. I don’t care what you think about it.”
Apple pauses. “But-”
“Don’t even say it.”
“Maybe I don’t want to woo boys.”
“Maybe I don’t want to be evil. And my dad isn’t evil! It’s just a stupid stereotype.”
“No, I mean. I don’t want to woo boys at all. I don’t-”
Raven spins around, and Apple turns to meet her. “Do you mean-?”
“I don’t like boys!”
Raven blinks. Then she says: “Neither do I.”
Apple takes a deep breath. Then she moves to sit on the edge of the dock with Raven. “I’m really sorry I was so mean to you.”
“Thanks. You’re going to have to make it up to me.”
“I know.”
