He's No Bird, But... (Formerly titled "I'll End It My Way")

Summary:

Izuku Midoriya wants to fly. He's no bird, but he'd rather be a songbird than a quirkless deku. So he decides to sing his favorite song, and then he will fly.

Aizawa Shouta and Hizashi Yamada want to finish their patrol in peace so they can get on with their date night.

Or, EraserMic hears a song.

Work Text:

Heavily flushed, Hizashi whisper-yells to his husband "You can't just say that while we're on patrol-!" The gruff, handsome man smirked. "Why not? Am I.. taking your mind off your duty?" Shouta responded in a way that was both cool and hot simultaneously. Shouta and Hizashi continued their flirtations while walking down the street, their faces illuminated by the streetlamps. The two were almost finished their night patrol, and both were eagerly awaiting the start of their date night. Suddenly, Shouta heard what sounded like Zashi singing one of their favorite songs, so he turned to him, curious. However, Zashi wasn't singing, but rather also looking for the spurce of the sound. They both looked up to the sky and Zashi grabed Shouta's arm.

In the dark, silhouetted by the moon, is a child. And they're on the roof of one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city.

"Stay down here. Be prepared to.. catch." Said Shouta, reacting immediately and running towards the the metal stairs on the side of the building. 17 flights. Shit. Almost before he moved his hand, his Capture Weapon was in the air. As always, it found its target with frightening accuracy. As soon as it wrapped around the top railing of the stairs, Shouta started his quick assent. Within a minute (Zashi was impressed, although petrified), Shouta was on the roof, frantically looking around for the child, praying that they hadn't jumped yet. I haven't heard Zashi yell.. and I haven't heard a-... a thud.

Just when he started to panic, he saw them sitting next to the edge. They were.. a lot smaller than he was expecting. Not wanting to scare the child, Shouta made sure his normally quiet footsteps made a but of noise against the gravel. The child was singing again and didn't seem to hear him. "And now, the end is near. And so I face the final curtain..."

"Ahem" The child startled at the noise and looked up at the hero. It was at this point that Shouta noticed the child's green, curly locks. Their wide, green eyes shining in the moonlight. Holy. Fucking. Shit. It was Midoriya. Izuku. His Problem Child. "O-ohmyg-god Aizawa-s-sensei oh god oh fuck-" And he starts to stammer and hyperventilate, as per usual. And as per usual, his teacher is quick to try and calm him down. "Kid, kid! Hey hey hey hey you gotta breathe, please. Come on, Midoriya. Izuku. In and out. In.. and out. Shhh..." Aizwa tried to breathe with his student to give him something to follow, and eventually it seemed to work, if only somewhat. The poor kid couldn't stop shaking and saying "Oh god sensei I'm so sorry."

When he seemed at least partially stable, Aizawa made an effort. "Izuku, will you move away from the edge? Please? I'd like to sit beside you, but I need you to move." As much as he wanted to yell and ask the kid what the hell he was doing, he knew that was the last thing the boy needed. Finally, Izuku nodded and moved, and in an instant, he was being held as close as could be in Aizawa's embrace. After a moment, they were both crying. "Izuku, dear God.. just let me hold you..." And he did. And they simply sat together on the roof. After a long while, it was Aizawa that broke the teary silence, backing up slightly so he could see the kid- his kid. He still kept his Capture Weapon wound tightly in his hand.. just in case.

"Izuku, you know I have to ask you why you were going to-" He swallowed, but before he could finish his grave inquirey, the Problem Child spoke up. "I just, I can't take it anymore-! Those stupid voices whichIknowarereallyjustmebutstill they keep telling me to 'just try it' and it's not like there's a reason for me to keep being a-alive anyway-" He took a breath. "Sensei-" "Aizawa. Call me Aizawa." "A-aizawa, please.. I can't keep going on, I can't keep ignoring it.. it's calling me. Please, just let me fly. I need to fly..." He cast a sideways glance at the edge, then back at the pro hero. Aizawa tensed. Just as quickly as Izuku tore himself away from the man, he found the Capture Weapon wrapped tightly around his torso.

Aizawa watched on as Izuku struggled for a moment (he was ashamed he hadn't realized how much strength the boy had lost lately.. he made a mental note to check on the boy's diet later) before he gave up, collapsing to the ground in exhaustion while still wound in the cloth. With a sad look on his face, Aizawa walked over to him and scooped him up into his arms. He looked down into the tear-stained face of the boy he had practically raised since he came to UA. Izuku was more than a student to him; he was a son. And Aizawa would be there for him. No matter what. As he stood there in the damp night air, he realized that his husband was still at his post at the foot of the building. Looking back down, he saw that Izuku was asleep, worn out from the mental and physical exhaustion. Aizawa gave a sad, tired smile, the smile of a worried but loving father, and began to make his way down the stairs. He moved very slowly as to not wake his Problem Child.

When he finally arrived at ground level, Hizashi came running. He quickly recognized his student and seeing the child lying limp in his husband's arms, he immediately assumed the worst. "Is he-?!" "Shh... no. No, he's fine. Relatively speaking..." Aizawa hurriedly quieted the man out of fear that his voice quirk would activate. "He's just asleep," he said In a hushed voice. "He's had a long night. I'll tell you about it once we get home. I still need to find out more from him, but.. he needs help. And we're going to get it for him." Understanding that Izuku would be staying with them, Hizashi nodded. The couple walked through the quiet street toward their apartment, the only sound in the air being their footfalls and the slow, steady breathing of the sleeping child unknowingly on the way to his new home.
