Three Stories and a View

Summary:

Trailbreaker is finally getting to build the house he was promised as part of his retirement package.

Work Text:

He’d been excited to receive the notification that his little plot of land had finally been visited by the construction crew, and Trailbreaker hadn’t hesitated to drive out to the site and meet with them while they were still there. Building projects were going slowly, even with the war having been over for five earth years now, and waiting for his little house had been driving him a little crazy.

“So, it ain’t a lot.” The crew foremech, a huge femme called Groundbreaker, activated a holoprojector to display the blueprints for his house. “Your lot’s small, even by the standards of what they’ve given the other soldiers, so we had to go up instead of out.”

His lot was small, but the trade off was a location close to the remains of the Gygax Wilderness Preserve and a view of the recovering forest there. It hadn’t been much of a choice when it had been offered to him.

Trailbreaker reached out and turned the hologram slowly in the air, studying each room and floor. Groundbreaker and her team had drafted a design–quickly, too–that incorporated each of his requests and his “it would be nice if we could” ideas of a skylight on the top floor and a wrap around porch. “Oh, Groundbreaker. It’s perfect.

“Really?” She sounded surprised.

“Yes, really. You’ve even got the porch in here, even though it makes the ground floor so small on the inside.”

“You made the porch sound important.” She shrugged. “Blueprint knows how to distribute a load, so we made it work.”

“I can’t tell you how much that means to me.” Trailbreaker smiled and turned the hologram so that he could look at the side that would be facing the wilderness preserve again. “There’s really only one thing I want to change.”

“We can’t add another floor on top,” Groundbreaker replied quickly.

“No, not that. I don’t need more space. I just want more windows. On this side of the house, so I can watch the park come back.”

“Hm.” Groundbreaker studied the plans for a few kliks. “I’ll have to double check with the others, but I don’t think we can do windows and keep the structural integrity. If we have the supplies, though, we can probably do a wall of transparisteel instead, though. If that would be something you wanted?”

Trailbreaker felt his optics go wide as he processed her words. “A whole wall of transparisteel? In a civilian building?”

“Sure, we used to do that before the war all the time.” Groundbreaker grinned at him. “So you want me to check with Blueprint and see what he says?”

“Yes, please do!”

With an entire wall that was clear, he might never get rid of some of his friends once they could finally visit. And of course, that didn’t bother him a bit; the guest rooms on the third floor were earmarked for Hound and Mirage already anyway.

“All right. When he’s finished with his meeting, I’ll discuss it with him, and let you know. Then we can start on the foundation any time.”

“As far as I’m concerned, you can start on that foundation right now.” Trailbreaker grinned. “I can’t wait to see the finished product.”
