she scanned one last column in the ledger, and only answered after the tip of the charcoal flicked across the page. “count's right.” the papers rustled as she pressed it closed. her voice was level, detached just like one of their wranglers would report to hook back then. clean, efficient, nothing more nothing less.
hook knew that tone well. it was expected, anyway. if they asked about business then they'd be answered the same. but there was another thing they were familiar with that neither of them dared to name since she got back - their back-and-forth banter as a language only the two of them spoke. she broke the formalities like she knew she was the exception. jokes slipped sideways into otherwise serious exchanges, and the teasing cut through any tension between. the way she'd lean just close enough to show that she means it. and sometimes, hook would be blessed with the song of her laughter - sharp and bright as a struck match, if they returned a flirt of their own.
but if this was how she chose to answer now, without stepping out of the bounds of mere competence, then it would be fair to meet her there, too. “good.”
