However, what was supposed to be a simple act of kindness turns into an emotional obligation when a hurricane ravages the coast, knocking out the power, flooding the area and stranding the three heroes. With deteriorating medical equipment, no way of calling for help and no solid backup plan, Bruce is forced to rely on his sheer determination and wits. Aaravos' arrival in Eacodor, the realm of the mirror, has drastic effects on the delicate balance in the world. On his journey, however, he is greatly delayed by the alterations which come with the imbalance.
Meanwhile, Aaravos must realise that he is confined in a tower. He battles with rage, boredom and loneliness, especially after his only companion, a goldfinch, died of old age. In an attempt not to drown in the mind-numbing lack of stimulation, Aaravos begins to use the library's limited sources to learn the language of this new, unfamilair world he's been thrusted into.
