Summary
In the fall of 1984, Hawkins seems to be going about its usual business... at least on the surface.
Carla Martinez has formed a close bond with Dustin Henderson, becoming a trusted presence for the boy. Despite her apparent stability, she keeps her attraction to Steve Harrington a secret, while he remains emotionally attached to Nancy.
During the Halloween party, an unexpected conversation between Steve and Carla bridges the gap between them. This encounter marks the beginning of an emotional connection neither anticipated nor is prepared to face.
While Steve battles the fear of failing again and losing someone he's growing to care deeply about, Carla confronts her own fear: allowing someone to truly see her.

The lab tiles under her small hands shimmered like a mirage, warping at the edges as Dustin's consciousness bled into hers, his panic a wildfire scorching through neural pathways not built to hold them both. She couldn't feel anything but the absence where her powers had been—a phantom limb screaming for amputation.
Dustin's memories flickered like a failing projector. The church's shattered stained glass dissolved into the lab's flickering fluorescents, then back again, each transition razoring through El's synapses.
Then—impact.
The sonic weapon's frequency cut out so abruptly El's knees buckled from the whiplash of returning power. The sudden rush of it was worse than the deprivation: her telekinesis came roaring back like a severed artery finally unkinked, flooding her skull with pressure that made her scream. Or maybe that was Dustin. Their voices tangled in the shared space of his mind, indistinguishable as the psychic tether between them snapped with the violence of a bone breaking.

He recoils in shock and terror when he sees its limbs – twisted and wrong. Its skin is torn open in places and hanging down, he can see the whiteness of bone beneath the torn flesh. A thick spurt of blood wells to the surface and splatters onto the floor between him and the sink.
The creature snarls and Mike screams.
It drops to the ground, twisting in mid-air to land on all fours. Its head is twisted in the wrong angle, its spine is sticking out from its back. More blood falls as the flesh is jostled. A thick, rotting smell fills the air.
Mike keeps screaming.
The handle jangles again, harsher this time. Will’s voice filters through, he sounds panicked. Mike can’t make out the words over the sounds of his own screams.
The creature titters, skittering forward, and Mike stumbles back. He hits the door with a loud thud. He’s still screaming.

The girl looked terrifying, fresh out of a slasher, and Steve had led her right into his home.
Out of everything that he expected to see in the woods that night - the woods home to old tall tales of monsters who snatched up children that ventured too close - she was the last thing on that list. A teenage girl bloodied and bruised, with a glint of something unnerving behind her eyes. It filled Steve with dread, and he was completely unsure of his next move.
