Summary
Stranger Things has finally come to an end and left us with some big complicated feels about how it all went down. Both of us (Jennifer and Beth) are bona fide fans who have seen prior seasons multiple times, and we had remarkably similar reactions to the fifth season, especially the series finale. So we decided to co-write a review, discussing everything we liked about it as well as kvetching about the things we definitely didn’t like—a shared “airing of grievances.”

So she knows this is all actually real... and she refuses to admit it.

Mike’s heart lurches into his throat, constricting his airway as he takes in his face. Because he knows that face. His eyes have wandered along that strong nose, those bunny teeth peeking out between parted lips, that mole beside his mouth. He’s catalogued every detail of that messy brown hair, those long eyelashes, and that pair of enchanting hazel eyes, over and over again, to the point where it burns behind his eyelids when he kisses his girlfriend.
“Holy shit,” the man breathes, gaping in shock, and for once in his life, Mike doesn’t need a trick to stop his loud mouth. For the first time, he’s truly struck dumb.
Because it’s him. Older, taller, and different, but it’s him.
The man standing in front of them, somehow, is Will.

18-year-old Will Byers gets sent back to July 1985, tries to help them out using some awesome superpowers and futuristic wisdom, and Mike does his best not to combust in the process.

So Mike has been a little bit of a self-obsessed asshole when it comes to his relationship with El, sue him. If any of his friends were dating a superhero who sacrificed themselves to save everyone and then came back to life, he thinks that maybe they would be a little self-obsessed, too. As it is, however, none of his friends are dating a superhero. Just him. Which means that he is the only one who has to sit through the berating conversations that occur when he accidentally forgets to manage his time between his friends and Eleven.

It's the summer of 1985, and Mike Wheeler comes to terms with how shitty a friend he is when he's dating El. He has some tough conversations and learns to figure out how to be who the party needs him to be. And if he manages to help defeat a terrifying monster who wants to destroy the world, then that's just another highlight to his summer.

Murray felt the contact ripple through him, warm like a wildfire. His eyes stung, breath punching out in short puffs. “No. No, you don’t—” He put his hands over his face, palms smearing up his glasses. “You don’t get it,” he switched to Russian. “If they’d grabbed you, if you’d…” He dropped his hands, finding Alexei’s eyes. “You can’t just be gone on me. I can’t—”
The words stuck in Murray’s throat, too big for the room.
Alexei’s fingers slipped from Murray’s wrist, bringing his hand into his. “Murray…” he whispered, the name thick with that Russian lilt. “Stay.”
