They were not bound to be together, still, they were now siblings, twins. Two sides of the same coin. Two magnets doomed to repel each other that somehow defeated all the laws of physics and united together.

The fractured Party broke the day that Lucas joined the basketball team instead of Hellfire. Mike doesn’t know who to blame, but he still can’t help but feel like it’s his fault. He’s supposed to keep everyone together and safe. Not a role he’d ever been particularly good at. His track record—not that he’s keeping track—is 2-0.

When he saw the messy strands of red hair, he let out a breath and his body released a bit of tension, but he still furrowed his eyebrows in confusion at the girl standing at his front door.
“Max?” He exclaimed, far too loud for the quiet environment. “Why are you here so late? It’s like two in the morning.”
“Can I sleep over?”
Max is having trouble sleeping, so she makes the spontaneous decision to skate across town. She eventually finds herself at a friend's doorstep, and the light is on inside.

Good. “He’s probably calling Hopper and Hopper is calling the U.S. Cavalry, they’re going to come in here commando style, guns a-blazing and kick your sorry asses back to Russia, and you’re gonna be two pieces of toast.”
They laughed, because they knew it. Because there was no other possible future where the Russians won. He imagined the General, blood pooling around his body. Dead. The General would die, and Steve took comfort in that.
The General nodded at Steve, a smug smile spreading on his face, then turned to the Doctor and spoke some Russian. They talked there for a moment, then they both walked out without another word.
“That’s bad right?” Steve asked once they were alone again.
“Uh, yeah. Yeah, that’s pretty bad.”
They leaned their heads on each others’ shoulders, and they stayed silent for a very long time. He focused on nothing but the connection, and hoped everything would sort itself out. He hoped Henderson was on his way.

It’s been a while since he had a nightmare like that. The kind that leave you panting and shaky, filled with a terror you can’t explain. Mike used to think he was lucky not to remember them - just the sour aftertaste. The sensation of falling, the burn of humiliation, the feeling that he’s lost something. Usually forgotten by the time breakfast rolls along.
But sometimes the not-knowing is worse. Like now, when there’s this heavy guilt throbbing behind his sternum and no way of diagnosing it. He rubs his chest, trying to coax it out but it only seems to burrow further into his viscera, like a parasite.
Mike finally braves a glance at his clock.

Outside the move of the Byers family to California, the deaths during the mall fire haunting the town and lingering trauma, high school still continues to be just as challenging and nothing is as it was before. Somehow developing a genuine friendship with Robin while ignoring her feelings, trying to keep the Party from falling apart and figuring out the perfect college to go to are just the tip of the iceberg.
Or an interlude between S3 and S4 in which Eliza and Steve need to deal with the impending future and what that means for their friendship while trying to get over their crushes (with varying success).
