Chapter Text
Lucy Carlyle and Lockwood trudged up the stairs to their office, tired and worn out from a long night of ghost hunting. Lockwood was uncharacteristically quiet, lost in his own thoughts, while Lucy was mentally reliving the events of the night, analyzing every detail for any missed clues.
As they entered the office, they both collapsed onto the sofa, grateful for the chance to finally rest. Lucy leaned her head back against the cushion and closed her eyes, savoring the silence.
Lockwood spoke up suddenly. "I don't think I could have done it without you tonight, Lucy. You were amazing."
Lucy opened her eyes and smiled at him. "Thanks, Lockwood. You weren't too shabby yourself."
They sat in silence for a few moments before Lockwood spoke again. "I know I can be difficult sometimes, Lucy. I push you too hard and expect too much. But I want you to know that I appreciate everything you do for me and for the agency."
Lucy felt her heart swell with affection for her partner. "You don't have to say that, Lockwood. I know how much you care."
Lockwood shifted closer to her on the sofa, their arms touching. "I just want to make sure you know that I appreciate you, Lucy. More than you'll ever know."
Lucy felt a sudden tension between them, an unspoken attraction that had always simmered beneath the surface of their relationship. She leaned in closer to him, feeling his warmth radiating from his body. Lockwood turned to face her, their eyes locking in a deep, intense gaze.
They sat like that for a few long moments, their breaths mingling in the air between them. Finally, Lockwood spoke. "Lucy, there's something I have to tell you. Something I've been wanting to say for a long time."
Lucy held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest. This was it, the moment she had been waiting for.
But before Lockwood could say anything else, they both heard a noise outside the door. Lucy quickly pulled away from Lockwood and stood up, trying to hide the disappointment on her face.
"Probably just George," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I'll go check."
Lockwood nodded and watched as she left the room, a pang of regret gnawing at his heart. He had come so close to confessing his feelings for her, but now it seemed like the moment had passed.
As Lucy opened the door and stepped outside, she realized that George wasn't there. Instead, she found herself face to face with a ghostly apparition, its cold breath chilling her to the bone.
Lucy screamed, but Lockwood was already on his feet and running towards her. He pulled out his rapier and swung it at the ghost, his movements fluid and graceful.
Together, they battled the ghost, their bodies moving in perfect synchronization. As the ghost dissipated into the ether, Lockwood and Lucy stood facing each other, panting and exhilarated.
Lockwood looked at Lucy, his eyes filled with emotion. "Lucy, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to let that happen."
Lucy smiled at him, her heart full of love. "It's okay, Lockwood. We'll have other chances."
Lockwood smiled back at her, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "Yes, we will."
And with that, they both knew that their relationship had forever changed, that the tension between them had finally been acknowledged. They would have many more adventures together, but none as thrilling as the moment when they had come so close to sharing a kiss.
