The Same Boy I Once Knew

Summary:

All Diluc wants is to know that his brother is okay. He can excuse the comments and sass as long as he knows that Kaeya is doing well.

(not a ship fic !!)

Work Text:

“Awww, you’re inviting me inside? You’re so sweet, Master Diluc”

Diluc couldn’t help but roll his eyes. “Shut it. You clearly have nowhere else to go, so come in.”

Kaeya smirks and walks into the Dawn Winery once again, taking in the familiar, yet oh so different environment. He leaves small puddles on the floor as he makes his way toward the fireplace to warm up. As much as he tried to wipe his feet on the way in, he could not stop his soaked clothes and hair from leaving behind small reminders of the pouring rain outside.

As much as he didn’t want this man in the winery, some part of him couldn’t just shut him out. It could have been so easy to just shut the door in his face and continue on with his night, but now he was in the main room with a towel he got from one of the maids around his neck.

Diluc walks over to Adeline and whispers something in her ear. She then nods her head and leaves. The silence between the two men made Diluc almost wish he never sent Adeline away.

The sound of Kaeya clearing his throat broke the awkward silence. “So… You still have the vase?”

His brother scoffs and crosses his arms. “I just haven’t gotten around to getting rid of it. I have better things to do.” He says.

Kaeya hums. “Yeah, I bet you do,”

Adeline then comes back into the room. “Dinner is finished,” She says calmly.

Diluc begins to walk to the dining table. He pauses for a moment and turns to Kaeya.

“You’re not going to eat?”

The two of them sit at the table alone, a plate sitting in front of both men. Kaeya didn’t expect to be let inside, let alone invited to eat dinner with his brother. Last he checked, Diluc hated his guts. When he came to the Dawn Winery, he was expecting his brother to be gone somewhere in Mondstadt. It was pretty late out, so he expected him to be doing his “Dark Knight Hero” duties. To make matters more confusing, he had left a plate for him. Kaeya was preparing to wake up starving and having to walk his way to Good Hunter to eat his weight in mora.

Diluc ate silently, drowning in his thoughts. As much as Kaeya’s presence annoyed him more than anything else, he felt somewhat comforted that he was being taken care of well. He felt reassured that his brother wasn’t out in the rain somewhere freezing cold. He’s a capable man, he knows, but no matter how many times he reminds himself that his brother was an adult, he couldn’t help but wonder whether he had been taking care of himself. Whether he was eating regularly. Whether he was drinking enough water. Whether he was getting enough sleep. As much as he hated to admit it, he really cared for his brother.

His thoughts were interrupted by Kaeya loudly crunching on his meal. The two look each other in the eyes and Diluc looks back down at his plate. “Maybe try eating quieter?” He said.

Kaeya chuckled and continued to eat.

Diluc was just happy that his brother hadn’t changed a bit. He was still the sweet young boy he once knew.
