Work Text:
Atsushi found himself staring at Lucy’s lips as she sat next to him on the park bench. They seemed… pinker today, shinier too. Not that he stared at her lips a lot- Well, maybe he did- But that’s not the point. It was a bit odd since Lucy rarely dabbled in makeup, saying it was too much trouble and money. But it was definitely pretty, though Atsushi always thought Lucy was pretty.
“What is it?”
The weretiger’s face flushed when Lucy glanced up from her book to make eye contact with him. “Oh, sorry- It’s nothing. Just… are you wearing makeup?”
“Ah, you noticed…” Lucy looked away almost shyly. Her fingertips brushed the corner of her lips, careful not to smudge the product, “Just a bit of lip gloss, the packaging was cute. It’s flavoured, apparently.”
“Apparently?”
“Well I didn’t want to lick it off to taste it, I’d have to reapply it and I don’t want to waste any of it. Besides…” She pursed her lips, contemplating her next words, “I thought that… maybe you could… taste test it for me…” Her cheeks turned brighter shades of red with every word she said.
Atsushi blinked a few times, confused, “Huh? You mean like, put it on myself and taste it? Isn’t that still a waste?”
Lucy stared at him with a look of disbelief that just made him more confused. She slammed her book shut and groaned, burying her face in her hands, “Idiot! I had to say that embarrassing crap only for you to not get it?!”
“Not get what?” Atsushi’s brows furrowed as his brain worked to interpret her words correctly. It took more time than he would like to admit, but when he realized what Lucy had meant, it hit him like a train and his entire face went red, “Oh. OH. Were you… Were you asking me to…?”
“To kiss me, yes!” Lucy glared at him, frustration and embarrassment clear on her face. She hid part of her face with one of her braids and glared off to the side at some innocent tree. Atsushi looked away as well, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
“Sorry I didn’t get that right away… Pretty obvious now that I think about it…”
“It’s fine,” Lucy mumbled, her face softening a bit, “I should’ve just been straightforward with you, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it. What you said was cute,” Atsushi looked at her with a small, awkward smile. She glanced back at him briefly before quickly averting her gaze again. He slid a little closer to her and slowly placed his hand over hers, “...Is the offer still standing?”
Lucy stumbled over her words for a moment before she clamped her mouth shut and just nodded, moving her hair away from her face.
Atsushi’s other hand came up to hesitantly cup her face. His eyes drifted down to her lips again and bit his own as his stomach flipped with nerves, “U-Um, I’ve never done this before so…”
“I haven’t either, so we’ll both suck, probably.”
Atsushi chuckled softly with a nod, “We’ll learn, I think.” He took a deep breath and met Lucy’s eyes. After a few seconds of a silent agreement, Atsushi began leaning in and his eyes slowly slid shut. Lucy squeaked softly when they lips met and Atsushi almost pulled away, but she quickly grabbed ahold of his shirt to keep him in place.
The kiss was admittedly stiff and awkward, neither of them moving much and simply keeping their lips pressed together. It was nice, though. Just the fact that they were kissing made the couple’s hearts pound like crazy and an unlimited amount of giddiness rise up in their chests.
Neither could wipe the silly smiles off their faces when they pulled away. There was a moment of semi-awkward silence before Lucy spoke up, “...Can you guess the flavour?”
“Hm? Oh,” Atsushi licked his lips and hummed at the subtle taste of the gloss that rubbed off on him, “Um…” He smiled shyly, “I think I have to taste it again.”
