Work Text:

Maybe Will wasn't having the best night either when he heard the knock on his window.

Maybe he had just had a mild nightmare. Maybe he couldn't get back to sleep and the shadows in his room were taunting him.

Maybe when he heard the knock, he shot up so fast it looked like he had just heard gunfire.

Mike's face popped in through the window, a shy smile on his face. "Hi."

Will let out a breath. "Hey."

Mike slipped in, landing softly on the floor (the first times he would do this he would crash and make a lot of noise, which was horrible because no one even knew that they were dating yet) and popping his shoes off.

As Mike snuggled himself deep in Will's blankets, he caught sight of what Will was wearing. "Is that my shirt?"

Will laughed, looking down at the Metallica shirt. "You don't even like Metallica, Mike."

He poured. "You look good in my shirt."

"Oh? Really, Mike?" Will loved Mike's name. He loved the way it tasted like sugar on his tongue-- it was the only thing he ever wanted to say for the rest of his life.

Mike nodded, keeping his eyes on the shirt.

Will could tell that something was wrong. "Mike, why'd you come to my house at two in the morning?"

Mike swallowed, scooching closer to Will. "Nightmare." His voice was barely a whisper.

Will snaked his hands up against Mike's sides, slipping his hands into the back of Mike's shirt. "And then you proceeded to come all the way over here in the dark?"

Mike laughed, but came even closer to Will. "It wasn't a nightmare about the upside down."

Will knows what that means. Oh, he knows what that means, of course he does. Every once and a while, a stray nightmare about Lonnie will sneak its way in with all the monsters and the cold nights, and it will always be the scariest one.

Mike rests his chin on Will's shoulder. "Thank you."

"This is what boyfriends do, Mike."

"I know, but still."

Eventually, Will pushed Mike slightly off of him, keeping his hands on his back. He started to kiss along Mike's jawline, one peck at a time.

He can hear Mike's breath catch in his throat. "Woah, okay."

Will stopped for only a second, a smirk stretching across his face. "What, you don't like this, Mike?"

"No, this is great. Don't leave any marks, last time that happened it was the most embarrassing thing I've ever experienced." Mike cleared his throat as Will started leaving kisses down his neck. "And then El asked Max why it was such a big deal that I had a bruise and then Max was about to fucking explain it--"

Will had reached Mike's collarbone. "Mike, stop talking about your ex while I'm making out with you."

"Sorry."

Will laughed, pushing back so that he could see all of Mike. "Y'know what I could do, since you don't want this to be the 'most embarrassing thing ever', where would it make sense to have a bruise, Mike?"

Mike thought for a second. "My arms. Or my legs, but that's not gonna happen."

Will grinned. "What, you don't want to have sex with me, Mike?"

Mike put his arms around Will's neck. "Not yet."

"Agreed." Will put his mouth on part of Mike's upper arm, sucking lightly so that Mike started to squirm. He laughed, looking back at Mike. "You really don't want me to do this anywhere else, Mike? Are you sure?"

Mike didn't even nod. He took one look at Will and suddenly his lips were on Will's, kissing with passion.

Will laughed again as Mike pulled away. "C'mon, I was trying to go all slow and romance you, and then you go and kissed me?" It was all in good fun.

"Well, I don't know how you expect me to not kiss you when you look like that."

Will smiled and shook his head.

"I mean, you in my shirt, with that look on your face and your hair--"

Will kissed him straight on, Mike's arms immediately snaking around his side. He inserted his tongue in Mike's mouth, running it along Mike's teeth.

A low whimper came from Mike's throat.

Mike immediately pulled away, and although Will was smiling, Mike was beet red.

"Holy shit," Mike sat up, almost looking like he was about to just make his way back through the window.

Will pulled him back down. "Mike."

Mike looked at him with eyes that remind Will of a sad puppy's. "Do you know how embarrassing that is?"

Will smiled softly. "Mike, it's just me." He didn't seem convinced. "One day I'll know every inch of your body, and you don't, and will not have anything to be embarrassed about. Because you're perfect."

Mike swallowed before meeting Will's eyes once again.

Their lips met.

The sun was shining in, this perfect golden light shining upon Mike's face. It made him even more perfect, like a painting. Will wanted to paint this moment.

Will felt a lovesick smile stretch across his face. "I want to wake up beside you for the rest of my life."

It was just this perfect, untouchable thing: Mike. He was everything Will would ever want and would ever need. He was the only one Will would ever want to spend the rest of his mornings with, because he was Will's other half. There was never one without the other.

"Me too."

Will laughed, Mike's eyes snapping open. Soon enough, they were both laughing their absolute asses off, at the fact that someday, they would be waking up beside each other every morning.

It was inevitable.

-------

El was sitting in the kitchen with a bowl of strawberries-- her go-to when she wasn't allowed to have Eggos for breakfast.

She could hear Mike and Will laughing, and from the smile on Joyce's face, she could hear it too.

Hopper came into the kitchen with a scowl on his face.

Joyce laughed, giving him a cup of coffee and a peck on the lips.

He mumbled something inaudible.

El laughed. "You really don't like Mike, do you? I mean, you can't hate him forever."

"Oh yes I can." He took a sip from his coffee.

Joyce just laughed.

"Besides, Wheeler comes by way more now that he's dating Will. It's weird," he grumbled, sitting down across from El.

El popped a strawberry in her mouth. "It's because he's in love."
