Work Text:
Karasu still remembers how he got into street racing. It was a few months after he graduated, and he had recently gotten his license. He had spent the prior years working part-time to make enough money to buy his own car.
It was never his intention to begin street racing, but after one specific starry night it was all he wanted to do.
The car was used and in shitty condition. But Karasu and his friend Otoya put money into it along with the help of a man they met on this journey. Now that car races like no other— Karasu is super proud of it.
Karasu’s friend, Shidou , another street racer was the one who got him involved with the “sport.”
One night Shidou had invited Karasu along to one of his races, and that night changed him forever.
..
It was almost midnight, the inky black sky above them, the only lights coming from streetlights, and custom leds on cars. Karasu was standing in a large crowd, and he followed the cars to their close. A quick—but life changing race.
Watching the car's speed down the secluded streets, the intense aspects, and the cheering crowd was surreal. The entire race left Karasu with profound feelings of want .
Shidou’s car was black, hard to notice in the night, but with his headlights on the car and its beauty was on full display. Pinks stripes and flames lining the sides, and he had his window rolled down.
“Hey!” Shidou cheered, a cocky smirk on his lips as he entertained the crowd. He pulled his sunglasses off his face.
Wait… sunglasses?. ..It was midnight.
Although Karasu knew not to question anything when it came to Shidou.
Shidou had his arm out the window, black nail polish blending in with the car, and jacket over his arms, warming him on this chilly fall night.
“Who’s ready?” Shidou asked—shouted—loud, but not as loud as the crowd who followed. Around fifty—seventy people were on the sidewalk, even crowding the roads as they cheered.
Karasu had never considered how popular this scene was with people. Groups stood next to each other, discussing the race, and exchanging money for bets prior.
Others had their phones out taking selfies, videos, and hyping up the race on their social media.
Karasu stood on the sidewalk, right next to a stop light, it was a short race. The first to the end of the long street would win. The street went on for four stop-lights, but Karasu knew at the speed they were going it would be over in under a minute.
Another car pulled up next to Shidou. Another black car—dark gray in sunlight, the license plate removed, and the driver wasn’t visible behind the dark tinted windows.
Karasu made direct eye contact with Shidou who shot him one of his grins, displaying his fangs, and one that said he was going to win .
Shortly after a woman stepped forward holding two red flags in her hands.
“Are we ready?!”
The woman shouted. The crowd went wild and Shidou whistled from his place in the driver's seat.
“Alright!” She happily hollered in response.
“And… three…two…one…” She held the flags high but as she yelled, “Go!” then her arms fell to her sides.
She stood in the middle of the road, and on the go the two cars quickly drove past her.
As Shidou’s car blazed by him a gust of wind blew into Karasu’s face. The cold air didn’t affect him because he was so blown away by the scene in front of him. The thrill, the suspense, everything about it was so intense, and it kept him hooked.
Their speeds accelerated, and they were going at unimaginable speeds.
Karasu knew Shidou was pressing down on the gas pedal with no remorse, right now he couldn’t care about the dangers, only the race going on in the present.
More people waiting at the finish line—or the final stoplight, along with a chosen person who was there to determine who would win the race.
Police sirens blaring as the race came to an end, Shidou picking him up after his win, and the two driving to the other side of town to dine. Karasu found himself explaining his feelings—the entire race like a small child enthusing their parents about an interest. Karasu has never been so invested in something before.
Karasu has never felt his heart beat so fast before. His chest rising and falling at a rapid pace, but nonetheless there was still a wide smile on his lips.
“Wow! Wow! Wow! Oh my! Shidou! That was—“
“Awesome, mind blowing, out of this world?” Shidou asked rhetorically, wiggling his eyebrows as he finished Karasu’s sentence for him.
Karasu was at a loss for words, he couldn’t explain how remarkable the race was.
“Yes.”
Karasu wanted to be sitting in the driver's seat. Karasu wanted the crowd to be cheering for him—he didn’t care about the money—the payout— no that didn’t matter. Karasu wanted to experience the thrill of the race first hand.
“What do I need to do to be a part of that ?!” Karasu asked, he placed his hands against the table eagerly, almost jumping at Shidou as he did, “Shidou! That was phenomenal!”
“Eh? You really want to?” Shidou asked, amused. He stuck a fry in his mouth, an excited smirk never leaving his lips.
“More than anything..”
Shidou laughed at the unusual excitement of his friend before stuffing his face with the burger in front of him.
“I’ll—mmrph gret you in contact writh our—mfph behind thga scenes guy.” Shidou commented with food in his mouth. It was a miracle Karasu could understand what he was saying.
“Don’t eat with yer’ mouth full.” Karasu groaned, scolding the immature boy across from him.
“My bad—but here.” Shidou held his phone out, a contact was visible, “Add the number to your contacts.”
“Yuki?”
“Mhm…he’s in control of the betting , and officializing the races. He’s the only reason I raced tonight.” Shidou explained, “I’ll let him know. Just text him whenever, and we can schedule something.”
“Okay..”
“Yuki doesn’t bite… and don’t sound so unsure.” Shidou laughed as he dipped a french fry in ketchup.
“I don’t!”
“Yeah, yeah. He’ll inspect your car, give advice about how to make it even better— he might even pitch in. Then all you have to do is ask him to schedule a race and he will.”
“How do ya’ find someone to race?”
“There are plenty of people in the street racing scene you’re bound to hate some.” Shidou explained with a laugh. The laugh was more of a personal one as if he was recounting a memory but not speaking it aloud, “And instead of fighting you race to settle your differences.”
“Not fighting? That’s strange to hear coming from ya.’” Karasu chuckled at the odd statement.
“Oh come on. I haven’t fought since high school.”
“We graduated two months ago, Shidou.”
“Yeah! But that’s not my point! And it’s still true nonetheless.” Shidou stated in defense. Then he spoke again but it came out in a pitiful whisper, “Plus…Sae-chan gets mad if I fight…”
“Hah! I knew there was a catch!”
“Don’t focus on that—this is about racing! You should be glad too, that’s the only reason we’re in a McDonalds at midnight.” Shidou said.
Karasu shook his head as a soft chuckle left his lips, and then he sighed, “Who’d ya’ race tonight?”
“Hm? Kunigami.” Shidou stated bluntly as if Karasu would recognize the foreign name. When Shidou met Karasu’s confused stare he explained further, “He’s got this whole “hero” thing going on…and it really pisses me off.”
Karasu raised an eyebrow as Shidou explained. He dipped a french fry in ketchup as he interpreted his explanation.
“Ya’ raced him because he had a silly dream?” Karasu asked with a snicker. What a stupid reason…
Shidou shrugged his shoulders, eyebrows racing as he did, “Yeah.” He answered nonchalantly.
“How am I supposed to take this whole thing seriously when these are the types of rivalries ya’ have.” Karasu sighed once more.
“Hm?”
“You’re an idiot, Shidou.”
“What the hell?” Shidou shook his head, “What did you expect?”
“Yer’ committing a crime by doing this, and the reason is a stupid dream.” Karasu laughed as he spoke, the statement sounded idiotic once said aloud.
“Yeah!”
Karasu sighed, “How do I even meet other people in the scene?”
“There’s groups…like Kunigami doesn’t outright say it, but he's associated with this German group.” Shidou said, he took a sip of his drink, and then he explained further, “I don’t get involved with that though, but if you don’t like one member you’ll probably find yourself racing the others as well.”
“Mhm…”
“Some of them are annoying! Don’t get me started on Michael Kaiser! Bleh! Every word he says makes me want to rip my ears off!” Shidou complained about a random man, “Oh! Oh! There’s also friendly rivals! Like me and this guy— Oliver Aiku —we don’t “hate hate” each other, but we still race in more of a fun way.”
Karasu nodded along with Shidou’s words, taking a sip of his own drink as Shidou rambled on about all different aspects of street racing.
“The betting scene also causes a lot of races. If you’re good you can get challenged by other people. It’s good for money making.” Shidou mentioned another topic related to racing.
“That’s what Yuki does ya’?”
“Yeah! The better the racers the more money that gets put into it.” Shidou explained gleefully. He was as enthusiastic about street racing as Shidou was.
Shidou then placed a hand to the side of his mouth, whispering, “Don’t tell anyone but I’ve made almost 400000 yen off of one race once.”
“400000? Are ya’ serious!?”
“Yeah! I treated Sae to a nice vacation with the money!” Shidou whistled. He had a cocky smirk on his lips.
“So, I’ll ask one last time…are you willing to do it?”
Karasu nodded quickly, and with zero hesitation at all he answered, “Yeah.”
“Great!” Shidou cheered, clapping his hands excitedly, “Text Yuki tomorrow and set something up. Tell me when, and I’ll be there.”
Karasu nodded and now he would just wait for Shidou to be done eating so he can drive Karasu home.
..
“…Alright…that’s my list of recommendations.” Yuki said, handing a piece of paper to Karasu. Multiple pieces—a packet. There were suggestions written in nice handwriting, and explanations for each one.
The four of them stood in Karasu’s driveway. More specifically the driveway of his parents house.
The sun was about to finish setting leaving the sky painted in dark oranges and purples rather than its usually bright baby blue.
“Thank ya.’”
Shidou grinned widely, “Thanks, Yuki!” Shidou thanked him as well, he wrapped an arm around Yuki who rolled his eyes.
Otoya stood next to Karasu, reading the suggestions over his shoulder.
“Can you do this for me too?” Otoya asked. Karasu twisted his head quickly, meeting Otoya’s own with a raised eyebrow. It wasn’t a sentence he was expected to hear.
“You want to race too?!” Shidou and Karasu asked the white haired boy in unison.
“Hm?...Yeah…it seems fun.” Otoya explained his reasons.
Karasu shrugged his shoulders, and a casual smile found its way back onto his lips. Him and Otoya were always causing trouble together so this was one more thing to add to their list.
“Yeah. Text me anytime we can schedule.” Yuki nodded with a soft smile, “Just ask Karasu or Shidou for my number.”
“Let’s go out for a little then watch the race tonight, yeah?” Shidou asked.
“Ya’ want to?” Karasu asked, eyes darting between Yuki and Otoya, “I want to.”
The two nodded and soon enough they were in Shidou’s car driving to a random park in the outskirts of town. It was almost eight at night. The sun had set by now, and the cold wind blew the leaves off of the autumn trees.
The four walked around the park trails, feet banging against the concrete with an audible noise, breaking the silence alongside the breeze of wind, and crunching leaves.
Shidou was happily walking, ahead of them most of the time, he’d turn around, and walk backwards whilst continuing to converse. Karasu could only watch, and wait for the impending misstep then fall.
“Who’s racing tonight?” Karasu asked in curiosity, this would be the second race he’d watch, and he was over the moon. He was so excited—he may have sounded childish, but he could not wait to experience the same emotions—thrill as the prior one.
It had been four days since Shidou raced, and Karasu was eager each day for the next.
“It’ll be Kaiser versus Isagi.” Yuki answered, “Pretty sure Isagi’s only racing him so Kaiser will stay away.” Yuki mumbled the second sentence with a small chuckle.
“Didn’t you mention Kaiser a few nights ago, Shidou?”
“Mhm. I don’t like the guy.” Shidou answered with a fake gag, “So obviously I placed my bets on Isagi.”
“That’s foolish.” Yuki answered, he pushed his glasses further up the bridge of his nose, shaking his head as he did so.
“Hah?!”
Yuki scoffed, “Betting with personal feelings involved is idiotic. It’s clear who will be the victor tonight…”
“…and that person is Kaiser.”
Karasu found himself to be a little taken aback by how determined Yuki seemed to be. It was clear that he had no doubt that Kaiser would win.
“Well, I’d rather lose money than bet on Kaiser.”
“Or don’t bet at all. Are you an idiot?” Yuki sighed once more.
“That Kaiser guy is good?” Karasu asked with a raised eyebrow and intrigued smirk.
“He may be annoying , but he is skilled.”
“I bet I could beat him.” Karasu commented nonchalantly, without zero care in the world, and he meant it— to some degree at least.
Shidou began cackling at Karasu’s silly declaration, “Pfft! As if!” He said between laughs.
“What have ya’ raced him?”
“No—but…just wait ‘till the race tonight. Then you’ll see.” Shidou answered, “He’s crazy fast, and he’s also genuinely just crazy. That man has no fear at all!”
Karasu tilted his head, squinting one of his eyes in a confused manner. What was that supposed to mean?
When Shidou picked up on the change in his body language he specified what he meant further, “Like…you and I both drive fast yeah?” Shidou explained, trying his best to put it into words.
Karasu nodded in agreement.
“Well, we also feel scared—and we’re especially fearful when we’re driving like a hundred—no over one-fifty? Yeah?” Shidou asked again during his explanation.
“Well obviously ya’ bonehead,” Karasu replied, “That’s normal— wait… you’re not suggesting he has no fear at all?” Karasu asked, but his question was answered just by the words Shidou spoke before.
That man really had no fear at all.
“Then what the fuck is wrong with him?”
Shidou and Otoya laughed at the vulgar nature of the question, but neither could blame Karasu for his shock.
“Yeah…I’m wondering the same thing.” Otoya said in response.
“I don’t know…” Shidou said with a breathy laugh, “…but that’s what makes him such a great racer.”
“You complimented him?” Yuki asked, amused.
“Shut up…it was for… teaching purposes . So Karasu could understand better!” Shidou replied in defense.
Yuki chuckled, “Well, I can’t blame you for saying that.” Then Yuki grabbed his phone from his pocket, checking the time, 22:37, “We should get going.”
..
“Holy shit.”
One statement that summed up how Karasu felt as he walked through the large crowd of people. If you though the crowd at Shidou’s race was big then you’d be just as equally shocked by how many people were gathered here tonight!
It was unbelievable.
Otoya was just as wide eyed as Karasu. This was his first street race, and he was in just as much astonishment as Karasu was three days ago, “Holy fuck.”
“Awesome right?” Shidou asked with an amused smirk on his lips. His fuschia eyes glimmered in the moonlight, and there was a spark of excitement on his face, “I already know this is going to be good!” Shidou whistled as he rubbed his hands together eagerly.
There was one car already there. Waiting. They had to park a few streets down to leave space for where the race was taking place.
The car was dark blue. The license plate was taken off, and the driver inside had black hair, blue eyes the same color as the car, and an egotistical smile on his lips.
The four had to speak above their normal volume level if they wanted to hear each other because of the amount of people surrounding them. There were a million conversations going on around them, and the feelings of exhilaration rushing through the crowd only made Karasu more excited.
The stop lights above then changing regularly casted a different colored hue on the crowd.
Karasu noticed that the crowd didn’t act much differently. Still taking pictures and videos, posting the location on social media, and overall all were waiting for the second driver to show up.
Then there was silence amongst the crowd, only a few whispers could be heard, as a car's engine could be heard revving in the distance.
Then a car blew past them, the crowd running out the way as it recklessly drove up next to the blue one. Once it had passed the crowd formed a half circle shape around the backs of the cars the the sidewalk up and down the street. Taking up the space.
The car parked and as it did there was a large amount of cheers. The car was a bold red color, and it had a German license plate on the back.
Then the driver's door opened, and someone stepped out. Walking cockily towards the crowd as if he were some sort of king. The man had blonde hair with blue tips that flowed down his shoulders, and his blue eyes stood out boldly against the bright red eyeliner he had which was the same color as his car.
“Ladies and gentlemen! How are we tonight?!”
The blonde cheered with a thick German accent. He had a teasing grin on his lips, and eyes that were hungry— ready to devour.
There was many screams and shouts in the crowd, and others began to wave their hands happily, or jump up and down in excitement.
The German held his arms out as he greeted the crowd from afar.
Karasu turned his head towards Shidou and he whispered, “That’s Kaiser right?”
“Mhm.” Shidou answered as he nodded his head.
The crowd hollered loudly at Kaiser's few words, fangirls squealing, and others chanting Kaiser over and over again.
Honestly Karasu was kind of envious. How did Kaiser feel with all eyes on him?
“Are you ready for me to sweep you off your feet tonight?” Kaiser asked with a wide grin. He was as cocky as he looked.
The crowd continued to cheer, getting riled up at Kaiser’s pre-race speech.
Then he turned around, his hair swaying as he did, and he walked back to the driver's seat. He didn’t care to fasten his seatbelt instead, taking his car out of park, and turning towards his opponent. Both the driver’s and passenger windows were rolled down, and he yelled, “I won’t disappoint, Yoichi!” Before the countdown began.
The other driver scoffed, unamused, and as equally annoyed as Shidou was with the blonde. Was Kaiser hate a common thing?
“…Two!” A woman cheered with a white flag in her hands, “…One…” The three seconds felt like an eternity as she counted down. The tension growing amongst the crowd.
“Go!”
As she yelled those words the two cars sped off up the road. This race was a little longer, and they’d end up making a turn. So Shidou held the livestream of the race on his phone as they jogged to the finish line.
You could see the race from cameras streamed live from different people in the street racing scene. The four ran quickly trying to catch sight of the finish line before the fast race was over.
Then they stood a few meters from the final stoplight. Where they’d need to cross to be announced the winner. How did they beat cars there? Well there was a quicker detour between business alleys that allowed you to cross faster, and with less turns than the cars.
Then both drivers came into view, going at least eighty—no…almost a hundred.
The blue car, Isagi’s, had pulled ahead, and he was winning.
Not for long though because Kaiser accelerated, and soon enough he pulled ahead, and they were right at the finish line.
Then.
The red car crossed first, tires screeching as his car cane to a halt, and he parked, sideways, in the middle of the road.
Yuki held a large sum of money in his hands. Ah, he did run the betting scene after all.
The cheers were loud, and the cops were bound to be called any moment if they haven’t been already. People threw their hands in the air as Kaiser happily hopped out of his car. Celebrating his own win humbly. The blue car parked not too far away, and the driver stayed planted in the driver's seat.
Karasu didn’t know why he did it, nor could he stop himself in the moment, but he stepped forward and towards the winner.
“Hey!”
Karasu shouted and greeted the blonde. Karasu had his own cocky smirk on his lips, and he quickly caught the attention of a now confused Kaiser.
Kaiser raised an eyebrow at the suddenness, and unlikely situation that had presented itself in front of him. It’s not everyday that “a nobody” walks forward trying to catch the attention of the king.
The people surrounding the finish line—the ones who haven’t left yet diverted their attention to the black haired man. He walked closer to Kaiser, and he asked one simple question.
“Will ya’ race me?” Karasu asked with determination in his voice, he grinned as he spoke, and he could feel the eyes of the crowd burning him with a harsh stare. There were a few gasps, ooo’s, and whispers as Karasu asked the question. No one knew who he was, but that didn’t matter because he would make a name for himself during that race.
Karasu asked Shidou a question when the two were discussing street racing for the first time just a few days prior.
“How do ya’ find someone to race?”
“There are plenty of people in the street racing scene you’re bound to hate some.”
This…this is how you find someone to race. Shidou was so-so right for once.
Kaiser’s eyes widened at the sudden request, or maybe he was more shocked by how sure Karasu sounded about it. Kaiser wasn’t unknown in this scene—actually, he was one of the best racers.
“Eh?” Kaiser asked with a humiliating chuckle, he was making fun of Karasu with one noise, and he encouraged the crowd to laugh as well.
Simple laughter wouldn’t turn down Karasu’s desire to race one of the best. Especially when this could push his name out there.
“Race me.” Karasu asked again firmly, he made sure to make it clear in his tone that he was one-hundred percent serious.
Kaiser continued to laugh, then his laughter came to a halt, “Race you…?” He asked confused, “…you… who are you?”
“Karasu Tabito.”
“Yeah…Karasu. Why should I race you?”
“Because you’ll lose.” Karasu stated with a teasing grin, “I’ll beat ya.’”
“Uh huh…and how would I know that you’re not flanting?”
What a strange question…?
Kaiser sighed, “I only associ—race people who’re worthy…that’ll bring me a thrill .”
“I’ll do all of that.” Karasu answered, even though his confidence was whittling away he didn’t let it show in his voice. He kept his tone as cool and determined as before, “The only way you’ll know is if ya’ race me.”
“Thursday.” Kaiser said, “We will race thur—“
“Can we do Friday actually…” Karasu asked awkwardly, inteeupting his opponent mid-sentence, “I have work on Thursday.”
Kaiser sighed, it was obvious that he was annoyed by this random man, “Yes. Yes. Whatever. We race Friday!”
Kaiser sighed loudly once more, and then there was a silence as the people surrounding them watched in shock.
“We race Friday! Spread the word!”
Karasu grinned. He has scheduled a race against one of the best there is. Now all he has to do is win.
Karasu turned around facing his friends who had been waiting behind him, and as he met their faces his expression changed.
Yuki was annoyed, shocked, and he honestly didn’t know what to make of this. Karasu was worried Yuki was going to scold him about his idiotic decisions, and part of him wished he would because as he turned away from Kaiser everything dawned on him. Otoya almost bursted out into laughter as he met Karasu’s gaze, but he covered his mouth with his hands, not allowing a noise to escape. Shidou was a mix of both; he looked at Karasu as if he were an idiot— which he partially was, but he also looked extremely amused by his daring actions.
..
“Karasu what the hell is wrong with you?” Yuki asked over the sound of Otoya and Shidou stuffing their faces with food. Shidou took a loud over exaggerating bite, and Otoya drank his empty soda that emitted an annoying noise as the straw tried to pick up any droplets.
“What…?” Karasu asked as if he had no idea what Yuki was talking about.
Yuki sighed, rubbing his temples, he was acting like a single dad taking care of his three kids, “You know what I mean.”
“Don’t scold him, Yuki.” Shidou said muffled by the food he was eating, “He’s just excited to race! When he loses he’ll realize the mistakes he made.” Shidou smiled happily as he spoke those disencouraging words.
“Hey—!”
“He’s right Karasu,” Yuki said as he continued to massage his temples, “…you can race all you want, but challenging Michael Kaiser first? I swear—did you hit your head?” Yuki asked in a genuine tone of voice.
Karasu sighed and asked, “What’s so wrong with what I did?”
“You challenged Michael Kaiser! This is your first race! Against Michael Kaiser too for that matter!” Yuki repeated the man's name to emphasize how serious this is.
“He’s fast.” Otoya commented.
“Exactly.”
“What if I win though?” Karasu asked.
“You won’t.” Yuki said harshly with zero faith, “If you win against Michael Kaiser I’ll pay you ¥65000.”
Karasu’s eyes glimmered at the amount, “Oh shit! Really?”
“Yes. Because I know you can’t win.”
“Ya’ so discouraging.” Karasu groaned at the response, “Ya’ have faith in me right, Otoya?”
Otoya grinned cheekily at the question, then he tilted his head back and forth. Karasu groaned again as he rested his head in his hands.
“I think…you have a twenty-five percent chance of winning Karasu!” Shidou beamed as he tried to cheer him up.
“That is not motivating, Shidou!”
“You’re the reason this is happening, Karasu.” Yuki sighed for the umpteenth time as his friend's idiotic actions dawned on all of them.
..
Why did Friday have to come so quickly? With work taking up most of Karasu’s schedule this week he didn’t have much time to prepare for the actual race. Not that there was much he could do.
Karasu had tweaked his car before the race, he purchased, and installed some of the parts Yuki recommended. Oh, and, he did it himself, being his own personal handyman.
Karasu was waiting for Yuki to text him, and tell him to drive over. Although he was extremely scared, the thrill of racing all came back to him. He was finally going to experience the adrenaline, excitement—all of it—all of those surreal euphoric emotions. He was going to be the one driving, and against a strong opponent.
Karasu didn’t know who was coming to watch— well people he knew , but he wasn’t able to arrive with him since he was one of the drivers… bringing his own car.
When he pulled up next to his opponent there was a…a rather large difference. How does one exactly explain it, Kaiser was Kaiser, but Kaiser’s car was not.
Shidou and Yuki walked over to Karasu who had parked a decent distance away from Kaiser. He rolled down his window allowing his friends to converse with him.
“Holy shit! His car is awesome!” Shidou practically squealed as he laid his eyes upon the other blonde's car.
Kaiser must’ve bought a new car because this car looked way more luxurious than the one in the race against Isagi.
“Don’t compliment my opponent will ya’?’” Karasu sighed.
“It must’ve been expensive!” Shidou continued the blabber, “I need to know the brand, make, model, all of it! How much did he pay for that thing?!”
Yuki sighed, “He drives a 2020 Nissan GT-R. It is extremely expensive…around fourteen million yen.”
Shidou and Karasu’s eyes widened simultaneously, “Fourteen million yen?!” They exclaimed in unison.
“That’s more than what I make in a year!” Karasu shouted, he was bewildered, flabbergasted, what an expensive car? Who was he facing?
Karasu paid 650000¥ for his beat-up used 2017 Toyota GR Supra. That was before repairs. He used all of his savings—along with money from his friends to get the car where it is today, and now he’s racing a man with the most expensive car he has ever seen.
“Holy crap!” Shidou laughed in astonishment, “I don’t even want to know the price of repairs!”
“I’m more worried about how he got the money…he’s what…two years older than me?” Karasu asked, just as bewildered as the others.
“A year.” Yuki corrected, “He’s actually a famous German social media star.” Yuki explained, “I do background checks on all our clients.” He said with a strangely creepy smile.
“Ah…makes sense then.”
“Going against a social media star? I didn’t know that. Kick his ass Karasu!” Shidou cheered in encouragement.
“Already planned on it.”
Karasu revved the engine of his car as he shot Kaiser an egotistical smirk. Karasu didn’t care if the odds were against him—if everyone surrounding them thought he was going to lose.
That didn’t matter.
Because right now he was sitting in the driver’s seat with a large crowd surrounding him ready to watch him race. Karasu could care less about the cheers for Kaiser, or the amount of people who only showed up for him because different emotions were taking over.
The thrill, the tingling sensation all around his body that made his limbs feel as if they’d go limp, the euphoric bliss he felt as the crowd cheered louder, all of that was enough to motivate him. Right now in the driver’s seat he had taken control, and instead of being shadowed behind a king like Kaiser he was standing out, shining brighter than the stars above him.
Then a woman walked out holding a large flag in hand waving it along with the hollering of a crowd. The excitement could be felt by each person there as if there was a string connecting all of them, and their emotions, linking each with one another.
“Don’t be too scared Ka—ra—su!” Kaiser shouted teasingly from his car, sounding out each syllable of his name, “If you sweat too much you’ll lose control of the steering wheel.” Kaiser said with a fake worried tone of voice, and a shrug of his shoulder.
Karasu scoffed and he smirked at Kaiser, not giving any attention to the taunts he was throwing his way.
Maybe after he could fight him…after he wins , of course.
Then the countdown began. The all so familiar three numbers were spoken aloud, and each second Karasu felt his body tense more and more. His heart was racing, beating out of his chest, but the adrenaline coursing through his body was addictive .
“Go!”
The race started, and the two were right next to each other. Their speeds accelerate at different paces. Karasu said Kaiser was pulling ahead, but he wasn’t afraid.
Karasu’s eyes diverted over to his opponent, observing his amused reaction as he pulled ahead as they ran through the first stoplight. The curl of his lips, and gently tapping against the steering wheel as if he was taking a slow drive around a neighborhood.
“Hey!” Kaiser shouted, grabbing the attention of the other, “What happened?” He asked cockily with a wide grin on his lips.
Karasu wanted to tell him to, “ fuck off” but there was no point in wasting his breath. Instead, he pushed his foot against the gas pedal, speeding up, driving faster than he ever had before.
Karasu was no Kaiser, he couldn’t drive this fast on secluded roads, and had zero fear at all. However, he could drive this fast, and push those fearful thoughts to the back of his mind.
Soon enough, Karasu and Kaiser were driving side by side once more, passing through the second stoplight. The cold breeze against Karasu’s face, cooled down his sweaty body. It was a cold night, but these intense feelings made him feel like he was on fire
Karasu had one hand off of the steering wheel, and he held it off, flipping Kaiser off before slowly down to make the turn. He slammed on the brakes quickly, the car jerking as he did, the sudden halt having an equally as sudden reaction on the car. Karasu turned and then he slammed his foot against the gas without any remorse at all.
His teeth were shining as he smiled, the expression he displayed must’ve looked goofy to anyone looking in, the wind making his hair fly back, and the crazed look of excitement that arranged the features on his face.
“Fuck,” Karasu muttered, not in a harsh or bad way, “…this is addictive.”
Now that he had begun street racing there was no way he would stop. Right now, losing was in the back of his mind because he wanted to feel the freedom he felt as he drove at this speed, forever . The eyes on him, people watching him—in envy.
The two passed the third stoplight. There was one more, and that would determine the winner.
Karasu could hear the people watching on the sidewalk going wild. Cheers and shouts of glee as Karasu pulled ahead. It was always entertaining to watch the underdog get the upper-hand.
Karasu could see people holding their phones out recording, taking pictures, texting others, and doing anything else.
He glanced over to Kaiser, watching the man in his driver's side window. Seeing his confused expression was surreal for Karasu.
He was doing it…he had passed Kaiser, and he was right at the finish line…if he kept this up he’d—
What?
A car flew by him, passing the last stoplight before Karasu could, and a mischievous cackle could be heard as this action was completed.
Karasu felt his heart drop. As surreal as this entire race felt… he lost?
Karasu knew he should’ve expected it, but as he pulled ahead, in that moment in particular he felt that he was great enough to defeat Kaiser.
Karasu slammed on the breaks, swerving to the left as he recklessly parked. Letting all of the emotions wave away, and allowing the feelings of loss sink in.
Karasu was bound to lose.
That was a given. Kaiser was better. Everyone realized that, so why— why was Karasu disappointed ?
Kaiser’s car door opened, and then it slammed shut with a loud audible bang. He clapped his hands slowly as he walked over to Karasu, “Wow!”
Karasu kept his window rolled down, and he watched Kaiser approach him. Karasu raised both eyebrows as the man grew closer and closer.
“You.” Kaiser paused as he took a breath, “You exceeded my expectations!” Kaiser grinned, a grin that felt so fake, everything about Kaiser from his voice to the words he spoke sounded like lies , “Wow!”
“What?” Karasu grumbled, he forced an annoyed tone as Kaiser stopped in his tracks.
Kaiser was a few meters away, and he stopped clapping his hands.
“You pulled ahead! I thought I’d win before you left the starting point!” Kaiser cackled mischievously, insulting Karasu with the words he spoke.
“Hah?” Karasu asked dumbfounded, “Ya’ got lucky.”
Kaiser stopped laughing and he asked, “Oh?”
Karasu nodded, “Let’s have a rematch. Next time I’ll beat you.” Karasu challenged, with that all so familiar sound of determination in his voice.
“This Sunday.” Kaiser announced the date.
Karasu may have had work the following day, but he didn’t care.
“Sunday.”
Karasu agreed.
..
The black sky was all that could be seen outside. Stars in the sky couldn’t be seen because of the shining lights inside of the store.
Karasu sighed, bored , closing the magazine he was reading, and placing it against the convenience store counter. He groaned as he paced back and forth behind the counter. It was almost midnight, and his shift didn’t end for another two hours.
The store was empty, the isles have been walked through at least a hundred times. There was nothing to clean, and no shelves to restock. All Karasu could do was stand behind the counter in immense boredom.
Then bells jingled, alerting Karasu of a new customer. Two people walked through the door. Two very familiar people.
“Hey!” Greeted a white-haired boy with short hair, he had a green streak going down the middle, the same color as his eyes, and he wore a puffy black jacket. It was none other than Otoya Eita.
Another familiar person followed right now to him. The curly-haired brown haired boy with model-like features. Twinkling brown eyes, sculpted features, chiseled jawline, and glasses that rested on his nose.
“You get stupider everyday Karasu.” Yuki chuckled. As he walked over to the counter, “A rematch?” Yuki asked.
Ah, they were discussing the race, and aftermath from yesterday.
Karasu sighed, “I genuinely think I can beat him.”
Both Otoya and Yuki’s eyes went wide, and they exchanged baffled expressions.
“Seriously?” They asked in unison.
“Yes.”
“Why…? Kaiser’s like super good.” Otoya asked curiously, “And you’re…average.”
“Shut up Otoya.” Karasu rolled his eyes with a soft stupid smile.
Then he sighed one more, resting his arms against the counter where the palm of his hand was placed against his cheek.
“Because…when we were racing, I pulled ahead. Even if it was for a second I swore I felt I could’ve won.” Karasu answered. Karasu couldn’t put into words exactly what emotions he felt, but something in his gut told him he had a high chance of success.
“Well, I believe in you a little more than last time, Karasu!” Yuki said in encouragement, for once. Otoya nodded in agreement with the statement that was made.
“I have my first race tomorrow, Karasu.” Otoya announced.
“Really?” Karasu asked, “Wait…I’m racing tomorrow too…”
Karasu looked at Yuki, asking for an explanation of this. Both of them were racing on the same day?
“Two races in one day.” Karasu was right, “Otoya is going first, and then you’ll race after.” Yuki explained further.
Karasu nodded.
“Oh! We’re here to watch the race with you.”
“I’m working.”
“On my phone idiot.” Otoya elaborated with rolled eyes, and then he places his phone on the counter, propping it up against a lighter stand.
On the phone was displayed a shaky video, not the best quality, but the scene could be made out. It was a secluded road, and there were two cars right next to each other. Shidou’s and one that Karasu didn’t recognize.
“Who’s Shidou racing against?”
“Aiku.” Yuki answered, “It’s for fun. No rivalry.”
The mention of the name brought Karasu’s mind back to the restaurant. More specifically a sentence Shidou had said while they were conversing about street racing.
“Oh! Oh! There’s also friendly rivals! Like me and this guy—Oliver Aiku—we don’t “hate hate” each other, but we still race in more of a fun way.”
Ah, so he’s racing that guy…
The two were speeding down the streets, and they were shouting back and forth at each other. What they said was inaudible, but it must’ve been jokes because what followed was loud laughter from both of them.
Shidou won but it was still a close race. He could see a teasing smirk on Shidou’s lips, displaying his fangs as he muttered something towards the black and green haired man. Then he threw his head back in laughter as an inaudible response was made.
After watching that, Karasu could not wait until tomorrow. He needed to race again.
When Karasu’s shift ended the three drove to Otoya’s, getting his car, and then they drove out to a secluded street. There wasn’t a race going on, but instead Karasu and Otoya were going to have a practice race.
Parked on the top of a long street with multiple stop lights. Yuki stood at the end, and he was also going to determine who wins.
Shidou drove over to watch the mini practice race, and he brought along Sae. Shidou was going to do the countdown, and then he’d fill the role of the crowd alongside the redhead.
“Alright! Are you ready!” Shidou cheered, over exaggeratedly, and then he began the countdown, “Three…two… oneeee… ” Shidou said, dragging out the last number.
“Go!”
As he shouted, the two drove past them. A gust of wind blowing at the two. It wasn’t really practice, but more so preparation for tomorrow since they were both racing.
Karasu pulled ahead at first, but Otoya put up a fight driving alongside him as they edged closer and closer to the finish line.
Otoya’s attempts weren’t enough though because at the last moment Karasu passed the stoplight, hitting the brakes quickly as he did.
“Karasu won!” Yuki announced as Karasu’s car came to a stop.
The race was short, and it came to a close quickly, but it was enough to prepare them— at least a little bit— until the races.
..
The crowd boomed. It was lively tonight, this was the largest audience Karasu has seen yet. All of these eyes were going to be on him?
Otoya was parked at the first stoplight, waiting for the other driver to be ready before the countdown could begin.
Shidou, Yuki, Karasu, and Otoya were all present tonight. Their usual group, and this was going to be an unforgettable night. Two races including the Kaiser rematch.
Otoya’s race was first. Karasu didn’t know the opponent. He had never seen him before.
The boy wasn’t present at any of the other races. Not even in the crowd, and with the features he had, Karasu was sure he would stand out.
In the driver's seat sat a person around Karasu’s age. He had fluffy pink-hair, bangs that fell upon his forehead, covering it, his eyes were dark pink just like the ends of his hair, and these colors sat beautifully with his porcelain skin. His eyelashes were long, they fell gently against his cheeks, dark color standing in contrast to his lighter skin, and he had a cheery smile on his lips. A genuine grin as he spoke to Kaiser who stood right next to his window.
“I’ve never seen him around..” Karasu commented offhandedly. He stood awkwardly next to Yuki as the three leaned against Otoya’s car. They watched their opponent from afar.
The four observed the group of people who surrounded the unfamiliar man's car.
“Oh him. I don’t know his name, but he does street racing pretty often. Usually with Kaiser they know each other.” Shidou explained to the others.
“His name is Alexis Ness..” Yuki replied, filling in the missing parts..
“Huh?” Alexis Ness…? “Where’s he been? He hasn’t been here the last few races has he?” Karasu asked.
“No. I heard he was in Germany for a few months.” Otoya responded. He had heard it amongst the crowd, talk of the scene, well, the girls he’d been flirting with that is.
“Germany? Really…is he any good?” Karasu asked as his eyes fell upon the pink-haired boy in the driver's seat.
“Is he any good?” Yuki laughed as he repeated Karasu’s question, “He races alongside Kaiser of course he’s great Karasu!”
Karasu nodded, ignoring the teasing from Yuki, and instead he focused on the mysterious man. Alexis Ness, huh? It was as if he had heard that name before…
Karasu didn’t know what was so enticing about the driver. Was it his unusual hair that stood out against his expensive grey car? Possibly…or was it the fact that he drives alongside Kaiser, or could it be none of the above—something different that Karasu doesn’t know yet? All were possible, but Karasu found himself entranced by the boy happily sitting in the driver’s seat.
“Karasu.” Shidou called his name pulling him out of thought he also grabbed his arm, and he dragged him to the sidewalk, “The race is starting.” He answered before any questions were asked, but he didn’t ask Karasu what had just happened. Not that Karasu would have much of an answer.
Kaiser was doing the countdown? Usually it was some random woman who stepped out from the audience.
Kaiser walked in front of both cars, standing in the middle. Neither could run him over unless they swerved.
Otoya revved his engine, shooting his friends in the crowd a gentle smile, and thumbs up.
Then the countdown began, and Karasu knew his eyes should’ve been watching his friend…. but he was so intrigued with this new person that his eyes couldn’t leave the grey car.
“Go!” Kaiser shouted and then two cars flew past him.
It shouldn’t have been shocking, but Karasu was stunned by how quickly Ness pulled ahead. His driving, the way he would turn recklessly, mess around mid race to taunt Otoya, everything was enchanting.
As Karasu watched him turn from the corner of the street he had to squint his eyes. Ness didn’t slow down, and he watched in fear waiting for the car to roll over.
His racing was beautiful.
It was clear that Ness raced for the same reason as Karasu, that being that he was in love with the thrill. Ness rarely slowed down, and usually he’d just speed up. Ness’s tires screeched against the street, leaving tire marks as his car messily got back on track.
Otoya followed not too far behind. Holding the steering wheel tightly as he slammed on the gas.
They were in the final stretch. Whoever would pass this stoplight first was the winner, but Karasu— everyone knew what the outcome of this race would be.
Otoya maintained a close distance for the majority of the race, but as they grew closer Ness accelerated and his car left Otoya in the dust.
Only a few moments later Ness was flying back the stoplight, slowing down, and steering right as he attempted to park going such a high speed.
“Holy shit!”
Karasu stood in the crowd, eyes wide, and mouth agape. A wide smirk grew on his lips as he tried to find uis words, “That was— holy shit—“ Karasu couldn’t find the words to describe how stunning Ness’s style of racing was. His breath was taken away, and he could only watch from afar.
Ness’s style of racing was so special because it was similar to Kaiser’s, but with more enjoyment. Ness didn’t have any fears, but because of the lack of fears he’d make reckless turns, and he’d do reckless things to taunt his opponent. It was amazing to watch.
“Stop gawking Karasu, and go get your car. Your race starts soon.” Shidou smacked his back playfully as he brought his friend back to reality.
“Right.”
Karasu had to park a few streets down to leave room for the race. It was only a few minutes away, and soon enough he was participating in his own thrilling race. Against Michael Kaiser. This was their second race, and Karasu was hoping to win— to prove that he was great enough to race against prodigies like him.
As he walked down the side streets. Empty, the sound of the crowd was quieter from afar, and his own breathing could be heard, seen in the cold weather. Yet, despite that, he felt as if he were on fire, sweaty palms, and shaky legs. The anxiousness was really beginning to set in.
He grabbed his car keys from his pocket, unlocking his car, the headlights flashing with an audible beep. He walked over to the driver's seat, opening the door, and letting himself in.
Instead of immediately driving to the starting point he sat there. The flow of emotions coursing through his body were unbearable; it was as if he was feeling every single one at once. He wanted to puke, but he also wanted to cheer. The excitement was exhilarating , and the adrenaline was rushing through his veins. Who knew racing could be so intoxicating ?
Karasu put on his seatbelt, and then he pressed the gas.
Now. Now he was going to race Michael Kaiser. Race him and win.
He drove his car over to the starting point where Otoya was just a few moments prior, and he parked next to Kaiser.
As he sat waiting for the countdown to begin his eyes didn’t fall upon his opponent, nor did they gaze at his friends. Instead, he couldn’t stop staring at the winner of the last race.
The way he stood against a streetlight, arms behind his back, and a wide grin on his face as he observed Kaiser.
Why couldn’t he pay attention to Karasu instead?
It gave Karasu more reason to beat Kaiser, and prove that he was better.
Then he stepped forward, walking across the stopwalk, and halting his steps once he was in the center of the two cars. Repeating Kaiser’s previous actions.
Ness held his arms up high as he began the countdown. The audience was silent as the suspense grew.
“Three…”
As the word left his mouth Karasu realized this is the first time he’s heard him speak. Even if it was in more of a loud yell.
What an elegant sound, the perfect tone, pitch, and it was as if he was listening to an angel.
“…Two..”
Kaiser turned his head towards Karasu muttering, “Don’t be sure you’ll win crow-boy!” He sing-songed with an ugly smirk.
Karasu tilted his head, and mimicked his smirk as he stared at his opponent in a questioning way. He was curious on what Kaiser had to say even if half of it went in one ear and out the other.
“I’ll crush you and make you lose all that passion you have for racing.”
“One…”
Karasu was amused by the declaration and in retaliation he replied, “I’d like to see you try.”
Kaiser covered his mouth as he laughed at the response then…
“Go!”
Karasu hit the gas faster than he ever had before, making sure his timing was perfect so he wouldn’t fall behind.
One thing he learned from the prior race was that Kaiser’s car accelerates extremely quickly, but it’s slow when it comes to slowing down. This will give him advantage on the upcoming turns. Knowing that it was no shock that Karasu immediately fell behind. That didn’t matter because he pressed his foot on the gas harder, increasing his speed so Kaiser wouldn’t keep pulling away from him.
The first stoplight was the closest one, and they were quick to pass it. Kaiser was ahead of him by a decent distance, and the cheers of the crowd chanting his name as he maintained his early lead.
Kaiser continued to pull ahead even as they passed the second stoplight, but this upcoming turn was Karasu’s hope to change the trajectory of the race.
As Kaiser began slowing before Karasu, Karasu slowed quickly, making the rough turn, and slammed on the gas just as quickly as before.
This action gave him the lead, but it wasn’t long until Kaiser was right behind him. The two were only a few meters apart.
Then they passed the third stoplight, and the race was coming to a close. The two were right next to each other, and no one knew who was leading right now. They were going fast, blowing past the crowd, and people on the sidelines.
“Go Karasu!” Shidou yelled from the sidewalk. His hands around the corners of his mouth allowed him to be heard.
Karasu knew the risk of going faster, the likelihood of him losing control has never been higher, but right now he was determined to beat Kaiser.
Karasu pressed his foot against the gas, gaining speed, but Kaiser repeated his actions. It was still unclear who was leading, and the finish line was getting closer and closer.
Karasu held the steering wheel tightly as he continued to push down on the gas pedal.
Then they crossed it, Karasu hit the brakes the moment he knew he had crossed the finish line. He pressed the brakes harshly, and brought the car to a screeching halt.
His heart was beating out of his chest, and he was breathing quickly. That entire race was exhilarating .
It was unknown who won yet, but the crowd's whispers and gasps continued to echo amongst the streets.
Karasu opened his car door, legs wobbling as he stepped out, all the emotions he had been feeling made his body go weak. It was a lot to process all at once.
“Karasu!” Shidou shouted as he ran over to the black haired man.
Otoya ran over too, patting Karasu on the back “Awesome race man!”
Yuki was standing in the center of the road discussing the ending of a race. Him and this other man were the ones who were made to watch the race—more specifically to determine the winner.
Parked a little further down the road was the winner of the last race. He was leaning against his car as he waited for the verdict.
“Who won?” Karasu asked, he only received unsure shrugged shoulders in response, “It was really that close…?”
Both nodded in response, but then Yuki turned towards both racers with a soft smile on his lips.
“The winner of this race is…”
The tension was building as Yuki spoke that sentence. The entire crowd was watching on their feet, and Kaiser was staring daggers at Karasu. I bet he didn’t expect the race to be this closer either.
“Karasu!”
As he shouted the name of the unlikely winner the two guys next to Karasu hollered and cheered at the mention of his name. The audience had different reactions; shocked gasps, excitement, and some angry that they lost money in a bet.
Karasu’s eyes widened, but his usual smirk fell upon his lips soon after. He turned his head in Kaiser’s reaction watching the blonde. He was clearly flabbergasted, but he kept his composure in front of a crowd filled with his fans.
“So…Kaiser.” Karasu began as he stepped towards the loser, “It looks like I won.”
“That you did…it’s one to one now. We’ll race again, and that race will decide who’s the better one between us.” Kaiser replied, his voice never broke, he never let any upset feelings seep through. He was as calm as he always was despite an unlikely loss.
Karasu nodded in agreement, he was already itching to feel those thrilling feelings again. Racing as a whole was a euphoric experience.
“Next Friday. Does that work?”
“Next Friday.” Karasu agreed, he held out his hand for Kaiser to shake, and then the race was officialized.
Next Friday the real winner will be determined.
Karasu walked back towards his car, where his friends were swarming around it. The audience was beginning to leave as the races came to a close, and no one was too eager to stay around to find out if the cops would show up.
Shidou was talking to Yuki and Otoya, but as Karasu strolled towards them he asked, “Wanna go out to eat?”
Karasu ignored him and continued walking across the street. As he passed by Shidou he whispered, “one second” to the other man.
“Huh? Karasu—?” Shidou asked at the strange actions. For a winner he seemed to have his mind set on something else.
Karasu continued to walk until he stopped in front of a car. A car that had been parked next to the sidewalk, watching the intense race from afar.
“Hey.”
Karasu called to the person leaning against the car. They were focused on their phone, but the sound of a voice and footsteps brought their attention to the approaching person.
“Hi?” The pink-haired boy asked, slightly confused.
Karasu grinned at the response along with the sound of the familiar voice, and then he asked, “Can I get yer’ number?”
“Hm…?” Ness hummed the question, “Is that what you want as a prize?”
As the other boy asked the question a small hardly noticeable teasing grin found its way onto his lips. He placed his phone in his pocket, and diverted his full attention towards Karasu.
“Ya’ could say that.”
“Why me?” Ness asked as bubbly as ever, “You do know that I am completely loyal to Kaiser.”
Karasu’s face dropped and a gross expression placed itself on his face, “Huh? You’re dating that guy?” How could that annoying blonde get so lucky?
“No. Not exactly but… I don’t see why his rival would want my number.”
Not exactly. Was he in love with the blonde or something?
“You want to know why?” Karasu asked for his expression quickly changing as he asked the question. His signature smirk fell upon his lips, and his eyebrows raised ever so slightly.
Ness nodded as Karasu spoke. Every movement he did was so elegant—gorgeous— Karasu might mistake it for flirting soon.
“I’m in love with the way ya’ race.”
“Mhm? So you want to challenge me?” Ness asked the light in his eyes twinkling under the moonlight.
Karasu laughed at the question, “I don’t know.”
Ness tilted his head, confused , then Karasu finished his sentence, “I might fall in love with you if I do.”
Ness raised an eyebrow, his entire expression growing equally as shocked, he must’ve not expected such an answer.
Ness giggled, covering his mouth with his hand, “You’ll have to earn it then, Karasu.”
Then Ness turned around walking to the driver’s seat leaving Karasu star-struck .
Karasu definitely had a favorite racer now.
Karasu turned around making his way to his own car just to meet a mix of bewildered expressions from his friends. In the moment he had forgotten they were there the entire time because while he was talking to Ness it was just him and Ness.
“Karasu, what was that!?” Shidou asked wide eyed, but there was heavy amusement in his tone of voice. He practically jumped onto Karasu placing his hands roughly on his shoulders, shaking him as he repeated the question.
Karasu sighed, decided to ignore the question instead, “You guys want to go eat? Otoya go get your car, follow me, and we can meet at the restaurant.” Karasu said, changing the topic entirely.
Changing the topic will never stop Shidou though. He sat in the passenger seat of Karasu’s car as he continued to nag Karasu.
“Just tell me!” Shidou pleaded as Karasu ignored him
Then they were sitting in an almost empty parking lot at midnight. Yuki handed Karasu a decently large sum of money for his winnings, and they ate happily in the diner.
Otoya and Shidou both shot each other mischievous glances, and then they were bombarding Karsu with questions.
“What was that Karasu?”
Otoya chimed in with his own questions, “Why would you ask for Ness’s number?”
Karasu groaned he didn’t know they could hear all that!
“I wanted to race him.” Karasu answered nonchalantly. It was partially true, but he wanted to know why he was so drawn to the boy in the first place. For now he could continue to write it off as him wanting to race even if he knew that was false.
“I wanted to race him.” Shidou mimicked, whilst making quotation marks with his hands, “Karasu do you remember what you said?!”
Otoya answered the question for him by repeating the same sentences Karasu told Ness, “I might fall in love with you!”
“Karasu is falling in love with a rival!”
Shidou shouted much louder than he should’ve in the secluded diner. At least there were no customers to upset instead he would only annoy the workers.
He clutched the fabric in the center of his chest, putting on a dramatic show, “Oh Ness!” Shidou mocked in a teasing tone.
Karasu threw his straw at Shidou, before reaching over the table to clamp a hand over his mouth.
“Shut up will ya’!”
“Alright guys that’s enough.” Yuki laughed softly as he watched the ordeal.
..
To prepare for the next race Karasu has decided to show up to every upcoming race. Texting Yuki for the times and dates. Showing up by himself when his friends have plans.
The only days he couldn’t show was Thursday and Saturday because he was taking overtime shifts— at the times of the races. However, the other five days of the week he was free.
Getting dressed, putting gel in his hair, and then driving over to the locations.
Karasu learned very quickly that another benefit with racing was that Ness showed up to a majority of them. If he showed up with Shidou, Otoya, or Yuki he wouldn’t make conversation with Ness because… well it's o bvious why not. He can’t trust those three to keep their mouth shut about the him and Ness thing.
Karasu liked to say that he was drawn to Ness’s style of racing, but none of them agreed with him.
Why did he even suggest that love was in the mix!
“Agh! I might fall in love with ya’? What was I thinking?!”
On this Wednesday the others were busy, and Karasu would be watching a race by himself. This wasn’t unusual for him, he’d done it when he watched Shidou’s race so what was the issue.
Karasu repeated the same actions he did before all races, parking his car a few streets down, and waiting on the sidewalk for the race to start. He didn’t know the racers tonight, nor did he care very much. Karasu was only here to observe how they raced and the tactics the different racers used. If he found a good tactic he could implement it into his racing, and hopefully his win against Kaiser would be guaranteed .
It was late, it was always late, and the streets were secluded like always. Street racing had many common themes that were noticeable the more and more you went.
Although Karasu was here to observe the racers. That wouldn’t stop his eyes from wandering, and trying to find a familiar head of pink-hair.
When his eyes fell upon the boy he was quick to walk over.
Karasu leaned against a streetlamp, and Ness watched him as he did so.
“Did ya’ miss me, Ness?” Karasu asked with a wide grin.
Ness muffled a laugh, “You’re back?” He asked. Avoiding Karasu’s question.
“Mhm…I want to observe races before I race against Kaiser again.”
Karasu was quick to tell Ness why he was there even if it meant Ness could inform Kaiser about it. Karasu didn’t care though because getting to hear that angelic voice respond was enough for him.
The countdown was beginning, but Karasu could care less about the race. Right now he was talking to Ness, and that was more thrilling than the unknown race taking place.
“Why did you want to race Kaiser?”
“If I answer, can I ask a question?”
Ness nodded and then Karasu was answering the question, “I wanted to make a name for myself in the racing scene while also participating in a thrilling race. Kaiser was super good, and I wanted to challenge him. Wanted to prove to those nobodies in the audience that I could beat him.” He laughed as he spoke.
“Did you actually believe you could beat him?” Ness raised an eyebrow at the cockiness Karasu displayed, “Kaiser is the best racer I’ve ever seen.” When Ness spoke about Kaiser he had a bubbly, warm smile that filled Karasu with jealousy.
Karasu shook his head and he chuckled, “Not at first. When I raced him, and almost won in the first race…then I believed I had a chance.”
“Do you think you’ll win Friday?”
“So many questions…are ya’ falling for me already Ness?” Karasu laughed playfully, “If ya’ want me to be honest I think the race ends in luck—like the winner gets lucky. I don’t think there's anything either of us can do to secure the victory.”
“No, I'm not falling for you. I’m just curious about your thoughts on it…” Ness mumbled in response, “Ask me a question.”
“Why are ya’ so devoted to Kaiser?”
“Huh?” Ness asked, confused by the strange question. Karasu didn’t know much about Ness, or Kaiser for that matter. So it was odd to hear such a question leave his lips.
“I’m just saying I think ya’ could do better.”
Ness raised an eyebrow, squinting one of his eyes, a perplexed expression on his face, “I’m not following. I should always be loyal to Kaiser. He is the best at everything.”
“What if I win the race, and then suddenly I’m better than Kaiser. Will ya’ be loyal to me— will ya’ watch me instead.”
Ness met Karasu’s gaze, but he didn’t flinch, nor did his expression falter. Then he let out a breathy laugh, “You sound like you’re obsessed with me.”
“Are ya’ not obsessed with Kaiser?” Karasu asked genuinely with a tilt of his head.
Ness ignored the question once more then he asked his own, “What are you getting at here, Karasu?”
The race in the back came to an end, and their conversation continued.
“Let’s walk around and keep talking, yeah?”
Ness hesitantly agreed, but they did end up walking the secluded streets together at the dead of night. The moon and stars shining brightly above them. The only other lightsource was the occasional streetlights at the corner of streets.
“Sorry if I came off kind of harsh—strange towards ya.’” Karasu awkwardly apologized.
“It’s fine, I'm just confused.” Ness replied, “I can do better? What do you mean by that, Karasu?” Ness giggled softly at the question.
Karasu paused for a moment, “If I bash Kaiser will ya’ get mad at me?” He asked lightheartedly, but it was a genuine question.
“Depends on what you say.”
“That doesn’t help…”
“Just explain, please , Karasu.”
Karasu couldn’t say no, “I think Kaiser’s an annoying, loser, idiot,” Karasu began, he tried to insult him in the nicest way possible, “And yer’ this awesome racer that could do better, but instead yer’ staying in his shadow. Following someone who doesn’t compare to you.”
“Hm…?”
“That’s why I asked if you’d follow me instead…no if you’d watch me, show me your attention instead.”
“You think you’re better than Kaiser?”
“Racing wise I think it’s close, but personality wise a hundred percent. I’d treat you like a king.” Karasu laughed as he spoke, but every word he said was honest and genuine.
Ness laughed as well, “So you weren’t lying about falling in love with me.”
“I said when we race, but… I might fall before that.”
Karasu was confident right now, and Ness’s responses only kept his confidence growing. He was so enticed by this boy, he was magnetic , and Karasu was captivated by every word he said.
Not to mention his equally beguiling racing style. One that would capture his eyes, and leave his heart racing.
“We’re racing now?” Ness asked with an amused grin.
“If ya’ want to.” Karasu responded, “I’d like ya’ to watch me in my next race though…”
“…and don’t take your eyes off me.”
Ness nodded, “Can’t make any promises, but you’ve caught some of my attention so I might glance over a few times.”
“Still playing hard to get?”
“You haven’t proven yourself yet.” Ness answered with a smile, “ But… I think you’ve earned my number at least.”
That was enough for Karasu, for now at least. The two exchanged numbers, and Karasu was heading home happier than ever.
..
Karasu sat in the driver's seat of his car. The audience tonight was the largest it has ever been, and all of those eyes were on him.
That didn’t matter though because there was one person in particular that Karasu wanted to watch him.

Ness gave Karasu more reason to win the race.
Karasu still believed that the winner would only win because of luck, but despite those beliefs he would still try his hardest to win. To prove to Ness, and everyone else that he is better than Michael Kaiser.
Kaiser had pulled up next to him.
In the audience stood Shidou, Sae, Otoya, and Yuki amongst a ton of other people. This crowd was huge.
“Who do you think is gonna win Sae-chan!” Shidou sing-songed the question.
Sae ignored him, “They’re racing again?” He commented.
“Yup!” Shidou replied as he cracked his knuckles, “This is their third race. Kaiser won one, and Karasu won one as well. This is going to determine the real winner .”
“I think Karasu has it in the bag.” Otoya responded with his own opinion. Yuki nodded in agreement, and Sae didn’t take a stance. But he probably agreed with the other three on Karasu winning.
“Are you ready for our final race, Karasu Tabito?” Kaiser asked as he rolled down the windows of his car. A song could be heard blaring from the speakers of the radio.
Karasu held one hand on the steering wheel, the other falling out of the window. He leaned his head back against the seat, and he replied, “Of course I am.” An egotistical smirk placed on his lips.
Ness was in charge of the countdown like in the previous race.
Karasu may have held a cool composure, but on the inside his heart was exploding and his brainw as running wild. This was far too many emotions to be processing all at once, but the adrenaline— the addictive feeling that has him hooked on street racing.
Each race felt as good as the last, and a large part of Karasu needed the race to start even if losing the race was a huge possibility.
Ness began the countdown, “Three…”
Karasu hovered his foot over the gas pedal as Ness began counting down. The crowd was cheering louder than it ever had before. The amount of people there was unbelievable .
“…Two…” Ness smiled widely, eyes glancing between both of them as he did so, “…One..”
“Go!!”
Karasu slammed on the gas, and the race began the same way as the last one did. Kaiser easily took the lead because his car accelerated faster than Karasu’s.
This race was going to be longer though because there was an extra turn and stoplight.
They passed the first stoplight quickly, and Karasu caught up to Kaiser. He was trailing behind him, and he pressed on the gas to increase his speed.
Those attempts would be futile though because when Karasu sped up so would Kaiser.
As they passed the second stoplight the turn came up, and Karasu decided to try one of Ness’s reckless tactics. He slowed down just slightly, and turned harshly, holding the steering wheel tightly with both hands.
Kaiser had fallen behind, slowing down a lot more than Karasu, and it was going to take time for him to catch back up.
The audience cheered as Karasu took the lead. Even chants of his name could be heard.
Karasu steered back and forth as he tried to get his car to go straight after the rough turn. If he had been going any faster he was sure his car would’ve flipped.
Karasu looked in his driver’s window, watching Kaiser who had fallen behind. A smirk fell on his lips as took the lead over his opponent.
Then they passed the third stoplight, two more to go.
Karasu was still in the lead, and this gap between them only grew at the next turn. Karasu was pretty far ahead. Maintaining this distance.
This felt surreal. This entire race felt perfect , and Karasu could only hope that Ness’s eyes were on him.
Karasu passed the fourth stoplight at light speed, and Kaiser was still far behind him. Karasu wasn’t going to taunt yet because anything could happen—change in an instant during a street racing match.
Karasu eased closer and closer to the finish line, and his smile grew wider as he was sure that he had secured the win.
Until…
Kaiser’s car was right next to him. Karasu looked out his window, meeting the amused grin of the blonde.
How did he do it?
It was neck and neck. Driving at light speed as both of them tried to pass the finish line first.
Karasu pushed down on the gas without remorse, he was going to beat Kaiser, and he was going to make sure of it. There was no way he was going to lose after all this.
Karasu refused to let that happen.
Karasu kept his foot on the gas, and the screams of the crowd grew louder as both of them passed the finish line.
There wasn’t much time to celebrate because just as Karasu parked the sound of police sirens could be heard in the distance.
Kaiser was quick to drive away, leaving the crowd, and Ness back at the scene.
Karasu didn’t know who won, and he would have to ask Yuki later for confirmation. In his mind, however, Karasu was sure that he passed the finish line first.
Kaiser drove off, not looking back.
“What the fuck is wrong with him…?” Karasu mumbled angrily under his breath, “Get in!” He shouted.
Ness turned his head towards the sound of Karasu’s voice.
“Ness! Get in!” Karasu yelled once more, trying to get the pink-haired boy's attention. They needed to hurry and get out of there before the cops arrived.
Ness ran over swiftly, opening the passenger door, and just as quickly slamming it behind him. Karasu began driving before Ness had time to put his seatbelt on.
Karasu was breathing heavily, the adrenaline slowing as the race came to an end. Another sound in his ears though was Ness’s bubbly laughter.
“Wow Karasu! You sure are something…” Ness said between laughs.
“Yeah?” Karasu asked with a grin, “Did I win?”
“Definitely.”
Karasu smiled wider at the confirmation of his win, “I think I deserve your attention now, yeah?”
Ness giggled once more at the statement, nodding his head, but never agreeing verbally.
Karasu reached over to the radio, turning up the volume allowing a song to play quietly so as to not have any awkward silences.
“Here.” Karasu handed Ness his phone as he continued to drive. He rested one of his arms on the center console, the other occupied with the steering wheel, “Type in your address. I’ll take you home.”
“Okay…thank you, Karasu.” Ness thanked him with one of his beautiful gentle smiles.
Karasu has never seen Ness in the daylight, but in the moonlight he was gorgeous. The blue hues went perfectly with his pink hair, eyes, and porcelain skin.
“Can I play a song?”
“Mhm…” Karasu answered, “Have I gotten any texts?”
Ness scrolled through his notifications, “Just one from Yuki it says we’ll be at your place soon.” Ness read the message aloud.
“Okay. Thank ya,’ Ness.” Karasu grinned at the boy in his passenger seat.
“Kaiser’s an asshole…leaving you there…it was clear he didn’t care at all.” Karasu muttered with slight frustration in his voice.
“He’s just like that…” Ness replied with an awkward smile. It was obvious in the way he spoke that Kaiser’s actions upset him.
“Ya’ could’ve been arrested. Why do ya’ let him treat you like that?”
Ness didn’t have an answer, not that Karasu was expecting one.
Karasu’s tone softened and he said, “I think you should follow someone who’ll treat ya’ better than Kaiser.”
Ness nodded and then a song began playing on the radio, and Ness turned it up. Karasu glanced over trying to catch the name, but it was written in German, and he couldn’t understand it at all.
The song had a soft melody, and a catchy rhythm, Karasu could hear Ness mumbling along with the words. Karasu couldn’t understand a thing being said, but it was a good song.
As the song came to an end Ness stated, “That song reminds me of you.”
Karasu wasn’t able to catch the name, not that it would help him, he was unable to read German, but now he was so curious to know what the lyrics said.
“What’s it about?”
“It’s a secret.”
Karasu chuckled, “Of course it is.”
He didn’t pry Ness for any more information, and soon enough he was saying his goodbyes to him as he dropped him off.
“Congratulations Karasu!” Shidou cheered as Karasu walked through the front door. Shidou was wearing a rainbow polka dot party hat, and he grinned excitedly as Karasu waltzed further into the house.
“My parents could’ve been here y’know.”
“Yeah but they’re not so we’re good!” Otoya chimed in, a party hat present on his head as well.
“Where’d ya’ get those stupid hats.”
“They’re not dumb!” Shidou said in defense, “And the corner store by your house.”
Karasu sighed and he threw his keys on the counter before jumping onto the couch. He relaxed into the warm cushions, tired after the intense race.
“Nice job, Karasu.” Yuki said wholeheartedly with a tender smile.
“Where were you?”
Otoya grinned teasingly, “Didn’t you see? He picked up Ness.”
Karasu rolled his eyes, and he knew at least one of them was going to see it. Karasu crossed his arms, “I took him home because Kaiser drove off.”
“You’re so into him.”
“How’d ya’ come to that conclusion Shidou!” Karasu shouted in annoyance.
“It’s so obvious.” Shidou giggled whilst covering his mouth with his hands. Shidou then sighed, crossing his legs, “Let’s race tomorrow Karasu! Friendly one!”
“I have work.”
“After your shift! Like you and Otoya did that one night. Just for fun!”
“Fine. Let’s race tomorrow.”
Once his friends left his house Karasu laid in his bed. He was sure he was going to sleep as soon as he hit the pillow, but there was one thing he needed to do first.

“Cheer for me Sae-chan!” Shidou sing-songed as he walked towards his parked car.
Sae nodded but he wasn't going to do it. If Shidou won he might get a congratulations after the race.
Karasu was already in his car waiting for Ness. This wasn’t a known race with a large crowd. The only people watching were those who were invited.
Otoya was doing the countdown, and Yuki was waiting at the finish line to determine the winner. It was also a short race, but it was all for fun.
“No hard feelings when I beat you, Karasu!”
Karasu laughed cheerfully, “There won't be because I’m going to win.”
The countdown began as Otoya stood on the sidewalk, instead of in between both cars, in his words the reason was, “I don’t trust either of you, and I’ll probably end up getting hit.”
“Three…two…one…”
Karasu slowly moved his foot down, and he hit the gas as he heard Otoya shout, “Go!”
The race was going normal— was, but something happen—it was a blur—Karasu couldn’t recall exactly what, but one second he was driving the next he wasn’t.
“Huh?” Karasu asked aloud, the sound of his car alarm going off, and an airbag in his face filled his ears. He wasn’t going very fast, so what happened?
Otoya and Yuki were at his window in a matter of seconds, attempting to drag him out of the car. He wasn’t injured— badly that is. He had been cut a few times with glass, and he knew there would be bruises covering his body the next morning.
Karasu felt dizzy, he didn’t remember crashing, it was as if everything went black, “What happened?” He asked the two as he attempted to steady himself. He held onto his car as his legs wobbled.
“You crashed into a pole.” Yuki answered, “You weren’t going very fast, but your car is…it’s not doing well.”
Karasu must’ve crashed right after the race began, but he doesn’t remember losing control, nor the crash itself.
Ness could be seen in the distance, his eyes wide, and he was swiftly walking over to the scene. Shidou had stopped a long time ago as well.
Karasu regained his strength, he was shocked, and it felt like he was somewhat out of it. He jogged over to Ness, and pulled him into a tight hug. Karasu buried his head into Ness’s shoulder, clutching the fabric, and refusing to let him go.
The whole towing situation, and police involvement was a blur to Karasu and soon enough he was entering an apartment that wasn't his own.
“Follow me.” Ness said. Ness lived in his own apartment, alone, and he invited Karasu over so he could treat his injuries.
Karasu sat on the bathroom counter as Ness took a first-aid kit out of the drawer.
Ness placed an icepack on top of his extremely red knee, and he began cleaning Karasu’s other wounds.
Afterwards the two went to Ness’s room so Karasu could relax. It was clear that he was still shaken up from the crash. He may have been going slower than he usually did, but it was his first time crashing during a race.
Ness sat on the bed next to Karasu, making himself comfortable as his eyes observed the other.
Karasu pulled Ness into a tight hug. One similar to the one he gave after the race. Karasu clutched the fabric of his sweatshirt in his hands, holding him close, he shut his eyes as he laid his head on top of Ness's shoulder.
Ness was confused by the action, freezing for a brief moment, but he reciprocated the hug soon after, wrapping two arms gently around Karasu.
“Huh..what?” Ness asked confused by the sudden action.
“I’m sorry…” Karasu mumbled into his shoulder, “I’m still so fucking scared…”
Karasu knew his heart was still racing, pounding, and Ness held him ever so tighter.
“Karasu…”
Ness murmured. One of his hands raised, and he tangled his fingers in Karasu’s hair, holding him against his shoulder.
“I’m scared…not only did I crash, but the costs of repairs—I’ll probably need a new car! I don’t have that kind of money. What if it happens again?” Karasu ranted on and on about the endless possibilities.
“If I was going my usual speed what would’ve happened?”
The crash replayed in his head over and over again. The different possibilities flooded his brain, bringing him fear, and he couldn’t shut his mind up.
“Don’t think like that…” Ness mumbled, “…please.”
Ness felt his heart sink in his chest as the crash happened, that feeling—every feeling he felt in that moment flooded back. He felt weak, scared, and too worried.
“I’m sorry. I just— what if I didn’t get to see ya’ again?”
There was a long silence after Karasu asked the question.
“I haven’t known ya’ long, but you’ve captivated me, Ness. Knowing ya’ were watching too…I worried…I’m so…I’m so sorry.” Karasu continued to ramble.
Then he halted his sentimental speech, and his voice became fearful. Karasu pulled away from the hug, meeting Ness’s worried gaze, “I’m more terrified that I don’t want to quit.” Karasu murmured in a pitiful low whisper. The feelings he felt were portrayed in the words he spoke. He was honest—he couldn’t lie to Ness.
Dangers come with street racing that is one of the first things your told. Even Shidou mentioned the dangers, but despite that Karasu didn’t want to quit. The accident could’ve taken his life—or seriously injured him. If he was going faster— the speed he usually went the pole could’ve torn through the car impaling him on impact.
Ness was watching as well…from afar in the crowd.
His eyes watched the entire scene play out. The worried screams, and gasps of shock. Otoya and Yuki practically shouted at Karasu just to respond, but he was too stunned to speak.
“Karasu that’s fine...” You shouldn’t. That statement never left his sealed lips.
“I could have died!” Karasu exclaimed, he pulled Ness tighter, almost suffocating him in the hug.
Ness hugged Karasu back then he murmured, “Karasu…” He paused after speaking his name, “…you’re in love with racing, and you should realize that it’s okay to not want to quit. You can be scared while also continuing to race. I race too—I may have not gotten injured, but I understand your love for it.”
Karasu nodded but he didn’t respond. Ness didn’t need a response when he knew that Karasu was still listening.
“Would you like to stay the night?”
Karasu nodded once more, but instead of pulling away his arms laid idly around Ness. Loosely hooked around his waist.
“Can I shower?” Karasu asked the question, words muffled slightly against the fabric on Ness’s shoulder.
Ness nodded and he finally pulled away from the hug. He walked to the bathroom, running the shower, and grabbing towels for Karasu.
Ness waited in the bedroom for Karasu to come out. His eyes were puffy, red, and his hair was almost dry, slicked back, and not up in its usually style.
“Hey.” Ness smiled as Karasu entered the room.
Karasu had an uncharacteristic frown contrary to his soft features, and he took a seat on the edge of the bed. Karasu was wearing Ness’s clothes, a sweatshirt and sweatpants more specifically, and he had a damp towel wrapped around his shoulders.
Ness frowned at the sight of Karasu, his dull expression, and unusual actions, “Are you feeling any better?”
Karasu shook his head. He felt awful. Not only did his car get wrecked, he was burdening Ness, Ness didn’t need to care for him, and Karasu wishes he hadn’t come here. He dislikes making people worry, and burdening them with worry—or other issues.
“Karasu.” Ness murmured. Karasu turned his head to the right where his eyes fell upon a slightly confused Ness. His eyebrows were raised— a kind of sad expression —his lips were turned down, hiding his beautiful smile, and his eyes were soft, but the light didn’t glimmer like it usually did, “Karasu.” Ness repeated the statement, this time his voice was louder—he was calling for Karasu.
Karasu swayed his head, moving his wet hair out of his face, and he tilted his head questioningly. He didn’t feel like speaking. More so, he couldn’t.
His throat was pained, unbearable , the scratching hurt, and he knew if he opened his mouth the tears would fall. His head hurt, his body hurt, he knew his arms and legs would be scattered with bruises the following day.
“Karasu.”
Karasu stared at Ness, deeply into his eyes, a light glimmered in Karasu’s own not out of happiness, but rather a stray tear drop that rolled down his cheek.
There was a brief pause before Karasu spoke for the first time since he got out of the shower.
“Sorry.” Karasu muttered pitifully, “For burdening ya’, seriously , I shouldn’t have.” He apologized, there was genuine emotion in his voice, but Ness couldn’t— he wasn’t mad at all.
“Karasu…” Ness mumbled his name once more. Repeated the same word over and over again, but each time it was a different emotion.
Ness sat up, propped against pillows that lay against the headboard. Ness had his legs crossed, and then he patted his lap.
“Come here.”
Karasu raised an eyebrow.
Ness then clarified, “Lay your head on my lap.”
Ness held his arms out practically telling Karasu it was okay, and to just do it in that one action.
Karasu pondered for a second, but he complied, and then he was laying his head in Ness’s lap. The other was running his fingers through his slightly damp hair, carressing it gently, soothing him, trying to help calm Karasu through physical touch.
As Ness threaded his fingers through his hair he murmured, “You needed this huh…”
“Mhm.”
Karasu hummed the response as he relaxed into the feeling of Ness’s soft hands. He let his shoulders fall, his tense features softening, and he felt calmer than before.
Although Karasu would have to deal with the issues surrounding his wrecked car, and possible injuries right now, Ness's affection was comforting.
Karasu was able to fall asleep that night, comforted by Ness’s presence.
The next morning Ness woke up before Karasu, prying the other off of his waist, and escaping the hug. He walked out to the kitchen where he made both of them breakfast.
A sleepy Karasu walked out of his room not too long later, and he yawned as he entered the kitchen.
“Good morning, Karasu.”
Karasu stretched his arms and he replied, “Good morning, Ness.”
Ness smiled as he made both of them plates.
“You should call me Tabito from now on.” Karasu replied groggily, “A name that just you will call me.”
Ness laughed and then he replied with one of his typical responses, “You’ll have to earn it.”
Karasu grinned and he grabbed the plate from Ness’s hands, mumbling, “Thank ya’.”
The two had a conversation over breakfast, and it ended with one question that sparked Karasu’s curiosity.
“When you can drive again…would you like to race?”
“Of course.” Karasu responded with a fond smile, “I have to work now. I’ll text you later tonight, okay?”
Ness nodded and Karasu was out of the door, his heart filled with love.
..
“Hey.” Shidou called, “Here.” He threw car keys at Karasu, and the boy stared at him confused.
“Shidou. If this is a gift I’m not accepting it.”
Karasu held the car keys up, staring at them in shock. There was no way.
Shidou laughed, “Yes you are. We all pitched in, it was kind of cheap, used, but Yuki installed some new parts. It should run similarly to your other one.”
Karasu felt himself grin as he clutched the keys in his hands.
“What? Let yourself have this one thing!”
Karasu didn’t want to worry or burden any of his friends, but he replied, “Thank ya.’ Thank ya’ so much.”
“Of course, dude.” Shidou replied. He pulled Karasu into a hug, “You better win that race for me, okay?”
“Ya’ know I never lose.”
..
Karasu leaned against his new car with a wide smirk on his face. He had grown a crowd of fans, and he had his friends watching in the audience excitedly.
A grey car pulled up next to him, and a pink haired boy walked out of it.
The two stood a short distance away from each other, shaking hands before the race started.
“If I win I get a kiss, ‘kay?”
Ness’s expression changed, and he beamed at Karasu before replying.
“Okay…you’ll be eating my dust though, Tabito.”
Karasu loved listening to his first name roll off of Ness’s tongue. Such a pretty sound.
Both hopped into their respective driver’s seats, and the countdown was beginning soon after with a booming crowd.
Karasu might lose, he can’t pay attention with Ness in the car next to him. His eyes wandered over to the other boy, but he’d have to focus for that kiss.
“Go!”
The moment Karasu heard those words he hit the gas, and he was quickly driving down the road. Fear was still present. Karasu could push these feelings down because right now he was racing Ness, and he wasn’t going to lose.
He grinned at Ness as he managed to keep up with him at their first turn, and the two stayed neck and neck the rest of the race.
Passing the first two stoplights right next to each other. Karasu would press down on the gas attempting to pass Ness, but he would repeat his actions.
On the next turn Ness passed him. Turning recklessly as he maintained super high speed throughout the turn.
However, Karasu was quick to catch up, and they passed the third stop light at the same time. Karasu continued to occasionally glance over at Ness while the two grew closer and closer to the finish line.
Then they passed the finish line, and Karasu pressed on the brakes bringing the car to a stop. He waited in content for the results to come back. Karasu didn’t care about losing to Ness, but he did care about losing the kiss.
“Ness won!” Yuki cheered as Karasu opened the door.
Karasu groaned “Agh! I was so close!”
Ness laughed bubbly and he walked over to Karasu, whispering something in his ear before walking back to his own. Ness may have won, but Karasu was winning alongside him.
“Pick me up an hour from now, ‘kay?”
Karasu nodded eagerily and he strolled back towards his car, hopping in, and driving home.
He’d leave thirty minutes later though to pick up Ness.

Only a few moments later Ness was walking down the stairs of his apartment building, and he was hopping into Karasu’s car.
“Hey.”
“Hi, Tabito.”
Karasu grinned at the mention of his first name, “I finally earned it or what?”
Ness nodded in agreement as he put his seatbelt on.
“Can I play a song?” Ness asked the familar question as he got situated in the passenger's seat. Karasu handed him his unlocked phone and Ness took it.
“Sounds familiar?” Ness smiles cheekily as he plays a song.
“Mhm…ya’ said this reminded ya’ of me.”
Karasu drove to no where in particular, parking to save gas.
The two were parked in an empty parking lot with a few of the sunrise. It was early in the morning since the races were beginning later and later.
“It’s a song about admiration .” Ness stated,
Ness gazed into Karasu’s eyes, “You said I should look at you, but I have been since your first win…”
“…and my eyes haven’t left, Tabito.”
A tender smile fell upon Karasu’s lips as he met Ness’s pink eyes. The words that left Ness’s mouth didn’t sound real.
Ness mimicked his smile and he softly grinned at Karasu. Maintaining eye contact with Karasu as the two gazed into each other's eyes.
The only sound was the music playing on the radio in the background. Karasu could see Ness’s chest rise and fall as he breathed, and his eyes never left even when Ness would blink.
The car was filled with a suffocating tension, and Karasu knew there was more than a love for racing here. Karasu had always loved more than Ness’s racing.
The moment he saw Ness in the driver’s seat, the crowd, leaning against his car—every time he glanced at Ness he was bewitched by the boy. From his attractive features, to elegant movements, but once they got to know each other it became more than that.
Karasu was hooked on every word he said. Intrigued by not only his racing style, passion, but also how wonderful he sounded when speaking about any topic.
Karasu always wanted Ness to look at Karasu with those same love filled eyes he’d gaze at Kaiser with, and right now in the early morning, sitting in Karasu’s car. Ness was staring at Karasu with those adoring eyes.
“I know I lost…” Karasu began breaking the silence, “…but I need to kiss ya’, Alexis”
Karasu reached his hands out, towards Ness’s face, cupping it, and then he pulled him closer.
“…Will ya’ let me?” He asked as he tilted his head. His eyes never left Ness’s own, even now as they were only a short distance apart.
Ness nodded slowly and breathlessly he mumbled, “…please.”
Karasu connected their lips, and he felt Ness’s arms wrap around his neck. The console in between them made it harder for them to kiss, but that didn’t matter at this moment.
All that tension that had grown between them was eliminated in that moment. When Karasu’s lips met Ness’s it was as if his love for him was sealed.
Karasu’s lips moved messily against the other, but he ran his fingers through Ness’s soft hair pulling him closer.
Then they pulled away, and Karasu opened in his eyes.
Ness was smiling fondly at Karasu as the two stared at each other, “You really did fall in love after a race.” Ness laughed as he pulled Karasu into a warm hug.
“I fell in love the moment I saw ya’ race…” Karasu corrected as he reciprocated the hug.
“I love you too, Tabito.”
