    Summary

For a brief moment, Lorenz imagines Claude gone — from the chair, from the world — and strangely, he misses him. He’s standing right next to Claude and yet he misses him dearly.

“I wouldn’t get used to it if I were you,” Lorenz says.

    “And why is that?”

Because — oh, Lorenz could write an essay on the topic: How Claude von Riegan Manages to Exist Between Loathing and Respect. Lorenz could write a novel. A collection of scattered poems about resentment and a blustering heat that isn’t entirely disgust. When Lorenz thinks of Claude, he thinks of frustration. Not red-hot hatred but something softer, smoother. A color that does not — should not — exist upon the spectrum.
