Work Text:
It had been a while since Shinichi and Heiji had gotten together. It had been an unexpected development for their relationship, as both were alphas, and a romantic relationship between two alphas (or two omegas) was just not something that happened often. However, them being together like this - not just as fellow detectives or even best friends - felt right to both of them, and their friends were all happy for them.
They had been together for a few months now, and as high school was ending soon, they had been talking together about what to do. They had both been accepted into many colleges, and some of those colleges were the same ones, but others were different.
“Ya got accepted in a lot of American colleges,” Heiji noted, looking at Shinichi’s list. “Quite a lot of foreign colleges in general. Are ya planning to go out of country?”
“I’m not sure,” Shinichi sighed. “I’ve been comparing all the colleges I got into to find out which one is the best, but it’s a hard process.”
“I only applied for colleges in Osaka and Tokyo,” Heiji admitted. “So I’m definitely going to one of those.”
Shinichi looked at his list, thinking. If he stayed in Japan and went to the same college as Heiji, it would be great. But some of the foreign colleges looked very tempting… and besides, he and Heiji hadn’t even been together for that long. So should he stay here for Heiji, or leave for his future career?
“Kudo,” Heiji said, and Shinichi was reminded that even though they had been together for half a year, they still called each other by their surnames. Neither of them were sure just how long this relationship would last. “If ya don’t want to stay here, if ya want to go to some college in the States or whatever, it’s fine. We can figure out some long distance relationship, right?”
Shinichi thought about it and said, “Hattori, I haven’t made up my mind yet about where to go… But I’ll take that into consideration.”
Heiji’s grin was bright, and Shinichi could almost feel his heart melting as he looked at the other boy. The one he realized he was starting to love.
“It’s always ‘are ya guys friends,’ not ‘are ya guys dating,’” Heiji complained as he left the restaurant with Shinchi. “This is discrimination against alphas dating each other!”
“In the waiter’s defense,” Shinichi said, “when two alphas hang out with each other, they usually are friends.”
“Still,” Heiji muttered, looking down at the ground.
Shinichi sighed and rested his hand on his boyfriend’s shoulder. “I think you’re just moody because of the murder case.”
“Anyone would be moody if their dinner was interrupted by a murder,” Heiji muttered.
“I want to be moody,” Shinichi said, “but you’re already being moody enough for the two of us.”
Heiji glared at him, but it was clear he wasn’t actually upset with Shinichi. Shinichi shot him a teasing grin.
He just hoped that he could come to a decision soon regarding colleges…
They spent the night at the Kudo mansion, and as morning hit, Heiji had decided to stay another day.
“Don’t you have homework?” Shinichi asked, already finishing his own.
“W-well, ya, b-but,” Heiji stammered. “It’s easy! It’s just math!”
Shinichi raised his eyebrows. He suspected that Heiji would just plug the equations into a calculator and pretend he did all the work, but oh well. That wasn’t the important thing right now.
“Well, treat yourself,” Shinichi said, motioning at the toast. He was secretly happy that he hadn’t managed to burn the toast. Maybe because it was just that simple to make.
“Thank ya!” Heiji cheered, sitting down and starting to spread butter onto his toast. Shinichi rolled his eyes fondly before turning back to his homework.
As it usually did these days, Shinichi’s mind turned back to colleges. If he left for the United States or any other foreign country, he would be leaving behind not just Heiji, but everyone he was friends with. But some of the colleges in the States he had been accepted into were amazing. But Japanese colleges were amazing too…
“Kudo, stop thinking about that right now,” Heiji spoke up, making Shinichi look at him in surprise. “Just enjoy breakfast.”
Shinichi sighed softly. “Alright,” he said. He bit into his toast, glad that he had his boyfriend with him.
As the day slowly turned into night, Heiji said, “We haven’t exactly done it together, right?”
Shinichi froze. “We… have not,” he said slowly, hoping that he was guessing right what Heiji was talking about.
“Is it time for us to do that?” Heiji asked.
Shinichi thought about it. Thankfully, this wasn’t as hard to figure out as the college dilemma. “Yeah, I think it is.”
Heiji got closer to Shinichi. “I-” he paused, took a deep breath, then grinned as he went on. “I want your knot. I don’t care I’m an alpha too, I want you!”
“And I want you,” Shinichi murmured, and then they were together.
The next morning, Shinichi said, “I think you should just skip school today.”
Heiji looked up from the bed with bleary eyes. “Huh? Why?”
“Because you’re already late,” Shinichi replied. “Besides, I’m skipping, so we might as well spend the day together.”
Heiji grinned. “Yes, that sounds amazing.”
“I figured it out,” Shinichi told Heiji as the two of them had lunch at Poirot. Azusa certainly seemed confused on why the two of them were skipping, but didn’t question it.
Heiji blinked a couple of times. “Figured what out?”
“The college thing,” Shinichi replied. “I think I’m going to stay here. America has excellent colleges, sure, but so does Japan. And besides, everyone I know is in Japan, including you.”
A grin formed on Heiji’s face. “Alright,” he said. “I think I’ll be going to Tokyo for college.”
“Will your father be okay with that?”
“Who cares about my father?”
As the two of them talked to each other, smiles on their faces, Shinichi knew that he had made the right choice. To stay here in Japan with his friends and his alpha, Heiji.
