Work Header

that time that Uraraka and Todoroki find out that Izuku is married

Summary:

The man’s eyes narrow into a squint as he stares at Katsuki, he looks him up and down, “Who are you?” He crosses his arms, a neutral look on his face.

“His husband, Midoriya Katsuki.”

“Sorry, sorry,” Someone from Katsuki’s left chimes in, she’s giggling to all extremes, “did you just say you’re Izuku’s husband?” Katsuki looks to see a young woman, definitely a doctor based on the fact that she’s wearing a coat that says “Doctor Uraraka Ochako” on it, and under that says, “Cardiologist”, which likely means she works in similar areas as Izuku (a cardiothoracic surgeon). Also, by the use of his first name, Katsuki assumes that the two are pretty good friends. “I’m pretty sure he’s single,” She giggles into her hand some more, “I know he’s hot and all but, sorry to say, he doesn’t seem interested in a relationship. Keep dreaming, buddy.”

Katsuki rolls his eyes. Obviously he’s not interested in a fuckin’ relationship because he’s married to him.

OR, literally what the title says. Uraraka and Todoroki find out that Izuku is married- To Katsuki

Notes:

I suppose this is kind of like a parallel to my work "that time when you find out your best friend is married" except it's a completely different universe that has no connections to said other work and Izuku's friends are finding out that he's married this time.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Katsuki makes his way quickly through the hospital, getting all the way to the nurse’s station before being stopped by someone, “Excuse me, sir. Can I help you with something?” A man asked, probably of similar age to Katsuki. Likely a nurse, since they are at the nurse’s station. His hair was kind of weird and if Katsuki met him in high school, he’d definitely make fun of it. It’s two different colors for christ’s sake.

Besides, who the fuck chooses red and white to go together? That just seems inconvenient. The red and white must mix together all the time. Besides x2, how do you manage to dye your hair red and white at the same time without it turning pink?

That’s some fucking hair dying logistics that Katsuki is not getting into right now.

He’s got more important things to do, so he tells the nurse (doctor, maybe?), “I’m looking for fuckin’, uh, Doctor Midoriya.” It felt kind of weird to call his husband by their last name, even adding doctor in front of it. But it’s likely the quickest way for this man to understand who he’s talking about.

Katsuki probably would’ve bet that Izuku speaks about his marriage all the time, he’s very proud of them for coming as far as they have. Yet, apparently, nobody here knows a thing.

He knows that Izuku only wears his ring on a necklace (since he’s a surgeon, he can’t wear it on his finger), so he likely is always wearing it under his clothes, which means nobody ever sees it. It’s kinda funny to Katsuki, actually. In fact, if he knows his husband in the slightest, the man likely didn’t even do it intentionally. If it were Katsuki in his position, he’d absolutely do it intentionally just so that Izuku could have a somewhat hard time the first time he visited his workplace.

Izuku, however, wouldn’t do that.

At least, Katuski doesn’t think he would do that. Izuku does like to cause trouble sometimes but he’d never do this much, right? Izuku probably just mostly avoided questions about relationships when speaking with his coworkers because, in the beginning, the two wanted to keep their relationship very very private. Now, they’re a lot more open with it. Still, if his coworkers asked questions back when they were still being private about it, it’s likely that they never thought to ask again, now that they’re more open.

“Well, hate to break it to ya, but he’s taken,” Katsuki crosses his arms, “now could you just tell me where the fuck he is? I gotta fuckin’ talk to him. Could you page him?” He looks at the man that Katsuki is now more confident in him being a nurse, based on seeing Doctor Uraraka next to him and what she’s wearing.

“I mean I could,” The half and half fucker talks, looking at the doctor woman for a second until she just shrugs, “I do not believe it is wise to page him though unless we can confirm you actually know him. He is a very busy guy, after all.”

“I’m his fuckin’ husband, I know him in more ways than all of you combined,” Katuski grumbles, dropping his arms and gesturing vaguely toward nothing, “if you just page the damn man, then he can tell you that he knows me, I can have a conversation with him about our kid, and then I’ll be on my way.”

“Your kid?” The doctor raises her eyebrows in shock before clutching her stomach to laugh, “Okay, now I know you’re lying. Izuku hasn’t ever said anything about a kid.”

Katuski rolls his eyes at the woman, she’s really starting to piss him off, “I don’t care what he’s told you about our damn relationship and our family. It’s none of your fucking business anyway.”

The doctor steps a bit closer, she’s just a bit closer than the half-and-half nurse now, “Fine, if you know him so well, tell me about him and maybe I’ll believe you. Because he’s never mentioned anything about a husband or a kid and I’m his best friend. For all I know, you could be someone trying to get him down here to shoot him or something like that episode in Grey’s Anatomy.”

“This is not fuckin’ Grey’s Anatomy and I really do not have time for this,” Katsuki grumbles. This would be so much quicker if his phone weren’t dead, he could just show this stupid ass doctor a picture of him and his husband and everything would be solved. But nope, instead it’s all a big ass deal.

In fact, if Katuski’s phone wasn’t dead, he wouldn’t even had to have come inside the hospital, he could’ve just texted Izuku what he needs to say instead.

The lady doesn’t say anything more, she and the half-and-half bastard just stare at him expectantly, “You’re really gonna make me do this to see my husband?”

“Mhm,” Ochako nods, smiling, “because I do not believe you and my friend is a busy man.”

“His favorite color is red because it’s the color of my fuckin’ eyes,” Katsuki begrudgingly starts off, just trying to stay as simple as possible but knowing damn well once he gets started talking about his husband, it takes him a bit to actually stop, “he’s owned the same pair of red shoes since he was in high school and he wears them to work every day but he changes out of them before his shift officially starts. His favorite food is katsudon and it makes his eyes light up whenever he eats it. Like actually light up, I’m not saying that just because I’m in love with him and find seeing him happy the best thing in the world,” even though it is, “because that’d be cheesy. But like, no, I mean it’s almost as if an actual light bulb turns on in his brain and lights up his eyes after he eats katsudon.”

The two just listen intently, still looking kind of skeptical, somehow.

“He was really close to specializing in pediatric surgery but just before he had to choose his official fellowship, he lost a string of kids on the same day and couldn’t take it, so instead he opted to go for cardio, which he’s been fascinated by since he was, like, 3 fuckin’ years old,” Katsuki explains further, he knew that once he got started, he would just keep going, “He’s a damn genius and by 4, he knew every bone in the body and every organ and it’s function. He knew everything about everything. The heart interested him the most.”

He goes on more because, clearly, he can, “He’s wanted to help people since he knew what helping people meant.” He quickly licks his lips because all this talking was making them dry, “He’s got a soft spot for kids, that’s why he wanted to go into peds at first because he wanted to help as many of them as possible but he couldn’t handle the deaths of them,” He knows how much a kid dying on his watch affects him, even now as a cardiothoracic surgeon, he still ends up operating on children from time-to-time and if he loses them, his mental health drops tremendously. He’ll come home and just wanna hang out with their kid for the rest of the night, grateful that she’s safe and healthy. Katsuki doesn’t really blame him.

“Izuku has two tattoos, one is of the nickname he calls me, which I tried talking him out of because it felt fucking weird as hell for him to be damn near branded with my name but he insisted and so there is a small tattoo on his left foot, right next to his ankle, that says ‘Kacchan’. The other tattoo he has is at the same spot on the other side, it’s of our kid’s name.” He knows that it’s very unlikely these two have seen Izuku’s tattoos but it felt necessary to share them anyway.

The doctor did just say to tell her about him. This is him telling.

Katsuki continues going because, let’s admit, he can go on for hours if need be, “Izuku’s mother worked as a nurse and she was rarely home for dinner so, even though he also works in a hospital now, he makes sure he leaves in time to get home for dinner. This usually means I’m the one cooking, which is fine because he can’t cook for shit,” Katsuki chuckles sharply, “he hasn’t worked on Saturdays since he became an attending and could be more choosy about his hours because Saturdays are the days we go out as a family and spend time together.”

The doctor’s eyes widen as if she’s connecting the dots. She likely didn’t know why Izuku never came into work on Saturdays before until now.

“He likes to mumble a lot, about practically anything. If you give him a topic and a pair of ears, he’ll go on for fuckin’ hours,” Katsuki says, smiling fondly at the thought of his husband, “hell, even if you don’t listen to him, he’ll probably still go on for a while. He brings a homemade lunch to work every day because I make it for him,” He sees as both people in front of him connect more and more dots, “if I didn’t, he’d probably forget to eat because he’s a very hard worker. When he immerses himself in something, he forgets that he has basic needs. Now, as much as I love to talk about my husband, I really have to get to work and I need to speak to my husband about something regarding our child and my phone is dead, so if you could just fucking page him, I will be out of this damn place, and you can go back to thinking you know everything about Izuku.”

The nurse looks over to the doctor who looks back at him and just nods, “Yeah, page him.” The nurse heads off to, hopefully, go page Izuku.

The doctor watches and he walks off but doesn’t make a move to leave herself. She gulps before looking back at Katsuki, “I’m sorry about that, he hasn't mentioned a husband or anything but he does talk about a ‘Kacchan’ a lot, I never realized that that person was also his husband.”

Katsuki can’t help but laugh. Leave it to Izuku to just assume that his friends know who “Kacchan” is to him. He probably figured that he mentioned it at one point and then never did.

“It’s whatever,” Katsuki’s laughter dies down and he crosses his arms. He hopes Izuku isn’t in surgery or something because he does really have to get to work.

“How old is your kid?”

“4,” Katsuki responds gruffly. He’s not really in the mood for small talk. He just wants to see his husband, tell him what he needs to tell him, and then go to work.

“Oh wow, really?” The doctor raises her eyebrows, “That’s awesome. Did you guys adopt or do surrogacy?”

“None of your business,” Katsuki rolls his eyes at her. It really isn’t any of her business at all.

“Oh,” She muttered out, shifting her weight from foot to foot. She clicks her tongue on the top of her mouth for a second and then asks, “How long have you been married?”

“5 years next Tuesday.”

“Woah, that’s awesome!” The doctor exclaims fairly enthusiastically for someone who just found out 10 minutes ago that her best friend was married. “How long have you guys known each other?”

“Whole life,” He answers these stupid questions as briefly as he possibly can.

“Really? Wow. Were your parents friends or something?”

Katsuki nods, “Yep.”

After a little while of silence, Katsuki is pretty sure that the doctor is finally going to stop asking questions when she starts talking again, sighing heavily before doing so, “You’re very difficult to talk to.”

“I just don’t like you.”

“What? Why?”

Katsuki just rolls his eyes and ignores her. It should be pretty self-explanatory.

Just then, the nurse comes back and he tells Katsuki, “Okay, I paged him and then I took a look at his schedule and he’s not in surgery right now, he’s on a consult so he should be down as soon as he’s done, which shouldn’t take too much longer now.”

Just as Katsuki is about to thank the man, the doctor speaks up again, “What do you do for work?”

“None of your business.”

“I’m just curious,” The doctor presses on, drawling out the last word.

Katsuki rolls his eyes, maybe if he gives her an answer, she’ll stop quicker, “As of this year, I’m the chief of police.”

“That’s super impressive,” The doctor praises, “Congratulations.”

“Thanks.”

She’s about to ask another question when Izuku finally arrives and saves him from his misery. He jogs over and a huge smile appears on his face when he notices Katsuki, “Kacchan? What’re you doing here?” He gives a brief moment of attention to the doctor, “Hey Ochako,” He waves, and then his attention is back onto Katsuki, placing his hands on Katsuki’s arms and giving his biceps a quick squeeze, “You’ve never come in here before, what’s up? Is everything okay?”

“My phone died, that’s all. Don’t fuckin’ worry too much,” Katsuki glances at all the people around. He’s never really been one for PDA and Izuku has his hands on Katsuki in a very telling way.

“Izuku, how come you never told me you’re married?” Ochako interrupts them, “And for 5 years?”

Izuku looks over at her and furrows his eyebrows, Katsuki really wants to reach his thumb out to smooth the wrinkles out, “I talk about Kacchan all the time though.”

“You never told me he’s your husband whom you have a whole child with!”

“Really?” Izuku questions, furrowing his eyebrows deeper as if he’s deep into thought, “No, I could’ve sworn I have.”

“You haven’t.”

“Okay, you two can deal with this shit later,” Katsuki takes that as his turn to interrupt conversation, “I have to get to work so is there somewhere we can go to talk?” He asks Izuku.

Izuku nods and leads them to an empty hallway, where Izuku asks why he’s here. Katsuki tells him everything he needs to say and they take a couple of minutes just to be with each other. Then, Izuku gets a page and he’s gotta go answer it so they’re saying goodbye and that they’ll see each other at home.

Katsuki gives Izuku a lasting kiss, it feels good to have kissed him before having to start his own job.

After that, he heads out of the hospital, making sure to sneak through the nurse’s station as quickly as possible in fear of getting stopped by that doctor again. There is no way Katsuki can handle more questions from her.

He successfully gets out of the hospital and into his car, deciding that today was already really weird and that he should just try to pretend that none of that even happened. Just keep pretending like he’s never actually met Izuku’s weird ass co-workers before and, instead, just go to work as if it’s the first thing he’s leaving his house for.

He gets to work and makes himself focus on it so that he doesn’t have to think about the horror that was the conversation of awkwardly standing there with the doctor while she was trying to make stupid ass small talk.

Though, he does still think about the kiss that Izuku left him with. He thinks about it and he smiles. He thinks he prefers it when that was just theirs when nobody really knew about them. Now, he’s pretty sure that news will spread throughout Izuku’s whole social circle, which is fine. Katsuki doesn’t mind.

He just likes being in their own private bubble but Katsuki will always welcome new chapters into their life. Just as long as it stays that, their life.

Notes:

WOO you did it, congrats :D

Leave a comment or something since you already made it this far, I suppose (there's an extra scene in the comments)

Btw, I did have an alternate ending where Uraraka and Todoroki did actually know who Katsuki was and that Izuku just told them to act like they didn't if Katsuki ever came to the hospital, just so that he could mess with him. However, I didn't go with that ending, obviously.
