Boiling rain, while the most common weather on the Boiling Isles, didn’t occur very often. Yet right now it was pattering against the force field Raine had surrounded the house with earlier that evening.
They were downstairs in the living room, practicing their viola. Raine had been preparing a new song to start playing. Another song for show, but when people offer money for them to play music at a party or something similar it’s worth knowing more casual tunes.
They leaned forward to mark an accent they'd been continuously missing during the song’s second movement. It had been quiet in the house, aside from their viola and the scribbles of a pen or highlighter.
“Just a few more reps… maybe…” They stared closely at the sheet music, before going back on their word “One more go.”
They held their viola up again and positioned it. They then tapped their foot and began playing. It was quite a long piece, having four total movements.
Despite the lack of magic in the music, Raine absolutely loved filling a room with the invisible part of the magic. The music itself. Every note and rhythm making a melody pleasing to many witches' and demons’ ears.
When Raine finished the song, they declared to themself a practice well spent and stored away their viola. After putting their stand away to the side they decided to head upstairs and check on Eda.
Raine opened the door to the bedroom and, unsurprisingly, Eda was in the nest. She’d been a little bit nest bound, being over eight months pregnant and all.
“Hey Eda, is there anything I can get you?” Raine asked her. Considering she was about to have a baby, they’d been sure to pamper her and comply with every request she gave them.
“What would a certain Owl have to do to get cuddles from her Foxy Bard?” She crooked her head around, smiling at Raine.
“Nothing. If it’s for you, my dear, I require no payment.” They smiled back and walked over to the nest, getting in and putting themself under the blanket with Eda.
“Sorry, by the way,” She said, wrapping her arms around them, “I’ve been trying to nap but… it’s not working too well.” Eda pulled Raine’s hand down to her stomach which they gently caressed.
“It’s quite alright, dear,” Raine nuzzled Eda’s face, planting a kiss on her cheek. They cuddled up against her, taking extra care to form their body to fit against hers. Eda let out a giggle at this.
“I’m so glad you’re here,” She said, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“You’d live,” They said, “But I wouldn’t be able to cuddle with you like this.” Eda giggled.
“I would die, I wouldn’t have your wonderful music,” She mumbled, sounding embarrassed. Raine raised a hand to their mouth to stifle their giggle. Titan, they adored their girlfriend so much.
“Did you enjoy that song? I was thinking of adding it to my music rotation for gigs,” They spoke hushed now.
“It’s a beautiful song,” Eda grew hushed as well, “Just as beautiful as my beloved Rainestorm.” She gave Raine several pecks on the cheek. Raine’s face was warm, melting into Eda’s soft lips pressing their face.
She stopped suddenly, and let out a laugh.
“They’re saying hello,” Eda said, “Do you want to feel?”
Raine nodded, placing their right hand back on her belly. Eda placed her hand on top of theirs. Her hands were soft too, but she had long golden nails that oddly enough balanced her hands out.
They felt a push against their hand and they giggled, along with Eda.
“There they are,” Raine muttered sweetly, “I think they know who I am.”
“Me too,” Eda said back.
“So why can't you sleep?” Raine asked, “I meant to ask you earlier…”
“… back pain,” Eda said, “And they won’t stop moving around in there.”
“Oh,” Raine said. They thought momentarily, “I wonder if singing would do anything.”
“Like a spell?” The ginger tilted her head.
“Not exactly,” Raine said, “I was thinking more of a lullaby.”
“Well then, I await your performance,” Eda said. The redhead closed her eyes and leaned her head down against the pillow.
Raine cleared their throat. They wrapped their arms back around Eda’s body before beginning.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.”
“You make me happy when skies are gray.”
“You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you.”
“Please don’t take my sunshine away.”
Eda smiled widely at Raine and decided to join them. Though her eyes remained shut.
“The other night dear, as I lay sleeping.”
“I dreamt I held you in my arms.”
“When I awoke dear, I was mistaken.”
“So I hung my head and I cried.”
Eda quickly gasped in between and quickly guided Raine’s hand back to her stomach. They could feel a more gentle kick than before. The baby must’ve liked the music.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.”
“You make me happy when skies are gray.”
“You'll never know dear how much I love you.”
“Please don’t take my sunshine away.”
Eda’s eyes were tired now. Raine could tell she likely was going to fall asleep soon. Her voice had gradually grown softer throughout the final part.
“Did it work?” They asked her.
“Mhm,” It was barely a whisper. Raine smiled and placed a kiss on her forehead.
“Well then,” They caressed her cheek, “Goodnight my sunshine.” Eda wasn’t much of one to respond to affection like that, but she had a small smile. Raine then watched as she fell asleep before them.
Once they knew she was out, Raine closed their eyes and shortly they were asleep as well.
